Unfortunately you can't tell by looking at the images in a listing, most of the time.

Make sure the seller has a good return policy.

Have access to a French made Lacoste shirt so you can compare them when you get one of the variations from Ebay.

It looks like there are shirts being sold now primarily from Asia and Peru. I haven't seen one of the Peru ones up close.

Two years ago I purchased one made in Argentina and it is virtually identical to the French Lacoste shirts I own (except for the tag design on the neck.) It has the same construction, fit, same color fastness, and very important: the crocodile is *exactly* the same. I've worn it and washed it almost weekly for two years and it looks great still. Unfortunately, I don't see these online any more. To me this shirt set the standard and I wouldn't want any other allegedly licensed version if it was not as good.

I'm weary of the Peru shirts right now (which again, I have yet to see in person) since in one close-up shot I've seen from one seller, the embroidered crocodile didn't look right - e.g., the red color in the mouth didn't extend across the entire jaw, the teeth weren't right, and the black detailing was thicker and entirely different.

Ironically, one prominent seller states that the Argentinian shirts (which he doesn't sell) are to be avoided, while his Peru shirts are preferred by people he knows over the French ones.

Confusing isn't it? And sometimes I wonder if buyers know what to look for, or are just satisfied because they don't know any better.

How to spot Lacoste fakes

The buttons should never have "Lacoste" printed on them.

This crocodile doesn't look right and the fabric looks cheap:

If you've seen a French shirt you know what I mean.

If you see packaging in a listing that has 'Made In France' printed on it, yet the shirt is $9.99, you know something is wrong.

Another thing - "Lacoste" should never appear inside or on the body of the crocodile, whether on the shirt, or on a label graphic.

So are they faked? Or just licensed by the company to be manufactured in different places/plants and not as good of quality from some places? If they are sanctioned by Lacoste, they are NOT fakes.

How to spot Lacoste fakes

Feb 24, 2005 12:32 PM
Hi: I have a Peruvian Lacoste shirt and compared it the the REAL French one. On the chest emblem, The Peruvian croc has rudimentary sharp flippers as oppossed to the round, formed arms and legs of the French one. Also, the Peruvian croc has a very blunt tail tip...couldnt poke anyone's eyes out with that (unlike Monsieur Croc who is sharp). Also, the Peruvian croc has more generous red lips than Monsieur. So...is my eBay purchase a fake?. Judging from the thinness of the material I think so. Still at such a pittance, I will impress everyone at the "country club" hahaha. Fleeting glory until my shirt falls apart after the first wash.

I recently bought a Lacoste Stretch Polo (Ladies) from eBay which was made in Peru. It looks exactly the same as the ones made in France (at least to me) except it was missing the care label! I already left positive feedback to the seller, so I left her a message; hopefully she'll get back to me?

I read online that all authentic Lacoste polos should have "Devanlay" printed on the wash tag. I recently bought a pink Lacoste polo the was "Designed in France, Made in Peru" and it's authentic. I compared it to a polo at Nordstroms and they're identical.

I just got two Lacoste shirts and they are the authentic ones and are made in Peru.

The Lacoste shirts that you buy at Nordstrom or high end stores and pay $70 for are made in Peru as well. The tags say Designed in France, Made in Peru. I don't think they carry them anymore since now they are pushing the Le Tigre shirts, but when Nordstrom did carry the Lacoste shirts they said Designed in France, Made in Peru.

They just outsource the work to Peru since it's cheaper to make them there. A lot of companies do it. They ship the materials over to other countries like Thailand, Malaysia, China, Singapore, India, Peru, etc. since labor is cheap.

But in Peru they also make fake designer jeans because that's where a lot of the denim used to make the fake jeans are from. Most of the denim from there is a light blue like a cheaper Wrangler jean. They use the denim to make fake Seven for all Mankind jeans and such. They scan the stiching on a computer and the machine does the stitching exact and everything but the quality of the denim is poor.

But back on the subject of Lacoste shirts. Yes the authentic ones that you buy at Nordstrom have tags that say Made in Peru. Actually they say Designed in France, Made in Peru.

The one in the pic above is European sizing so maybe those are made in France and they sell both the ones Made in Peru and the European sized ones Made in France.

The ones I have, I only have two since I just got them and I am not a big Lacoste fan, say Designed in France, Made in Peru just like the ones I saw at the Nordstrom but they have the standard sizing like 3, 4, 5 etc. 3 is an XS, 4 is a Small, 5 Medium etc. I got the size 3 in Extra Small. White and Navy color. Pretty nice shirts. Very breathable and light.

But I don't know a lot about Lacoste and am not a big fan. I just have these two new shirts. And I have some older "vintage" Lacoste stuff that is Made in France.

How to spot Lacoste fakes

Lacoste Shirts that are "Designed in France Made in Peru" are authentic. I bought some shirts from the Lacoste store in Houston Galleria and it said "Designed in France Made in Peru." Most of the shirts are now Made in Peru, I hardly see any Made in France in that store. So I asked the manager if they're authentic, she said "of course they are, you're in a Lacoste store, remember?" She then explained that LAcoste is outsourcing and have put up factories elsewhere to save on labor. If they're all made in France, the cost of the shirt will be even more than $72, according to her.

Also, you need to check if it has the Devanlay print on the wash tag and the buttons should be mother of pearl, not plastic. It's a Lacoste trademark, Devanlay tag and mother of pearl buttons.

these shirts are authentic, very similar to the ones I bought from the Lacoste store.

That seller is ripping people off with shipping, though. $16.50 to ship two shirts? I'd rather pay full price at the Lacoste store.

but the starting price is so low, that's probably why the shipping is a little bit high. check her feedback, buyers commented on how fast she ships her items.

true, different strokes for different folks...if you think the shipping and handling charge is too much, walk on by and ignore that seller. but if you think you're still getting a good deal even with the shipping and handling, then go ahead and bid.

some sellers charge high shipping but low bid price, and some sellers start at a high price and then low shipping. as a buyer, i have to calculate everything, if i'd still get a good deal on top of the shipping and handling charge and if i am, i'd go ahead and bid. if not, i'd pass and go on to the next best thing.

Way high shipping bothers me. If I have to pay fees on the full amount, then everybody else should have to as well. Borderline fee avoidance annoys me and I usually choose not to bid.

Heck, I ship 2 items regularly to China for way less than that.

If you aren't willing to play by the rules (e.g. shipping costs must be reasonable) then I'm leary of dealing with that seller in other areas.

Maybe just me, though. Anyway, I buy my Lacoste as Nordstrom. Between the fakes and the made for other markets, the Euro-sized authentic polo is just too difficult to search out. I do recommend Lacoste polos though. The fit is nice and the quality is good too, nice and thick with a bit of stretch.
