Vertigo and Ear Ringing

hi everyone
i have a questions maybe someone here has had or knows someone that has had ear ringing. i have been told by medical peeps that there is no cure, but i thought i would put it out there and see if there is anyone that has sucessfully treated theirs with something that helped.
i have been diagnosed with menieres disease. it's an inner ear disorder, severe vertigo, the most disturbing apart of the disease has susbsided for now but i am left with very lo9ud ringing in my right ear.
i have some hearing loss in that ear which doesn't seem to be a problem yet but i have the absolute loudest ringing in my ear when i try to sleep.
i have a white noise machine and it helps a bit for dozing off but wakes me up later in the night and i have to get up and turn it off. my ringing is a pulsating high pitched sound and it is driving me crazy.
anyone have it or know of or heard of something that can help?

I went to an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist last year for ringing in my ears. He said, "I have that, too. It is very irritating, isn't it?" He did extensive testing and finally told me to live with it.
Upon my leaving his office, he said "Well, I'll see you next year." I replied, "Do you anticipate being able to help me in a year?" He told me "No, but I'll be able to tell you if it is worse" to which I replied "I think I will be a better judge of that". I did receive a notice telling me that it is time for my check up, I didn't go back.
The ringing in my ears sounds like I am standing near an electrical pole all of the time. 24/7.

Over ten years ago I had what is called an acoustic neuroma. It groes in the inner ear. I had it removed, am deaf in left ear. They said it is slow growing and was probably growing for 10-15 years.
Symptoms like you, not to scare you, I would have a MRI. My diagnosis was a second opinion.
Good Luck.

About 8 years ago I was sick and had an ear ache. They ended up having to flush one of my ears and I got braces the next day.
Vertigo was semi-bad. Just felt nausious and dizzy like I was on the verge of throwing up. The ringing started.
The orthodontist told me it was because I had my ears flushed. The doctor told me it was because of the braces. SIGH. I was diagnosed with Meniere's and took meclazine ((sp?)) The vertigo didn't last long. The tinnitus is still with me. Some days it's fine, others it bothers me. I think it wears me down fast when it gets bad.
Funny, but I can't stand background/white noise. Bathroom fans, the hood vent over the stove--those sounds drive me up a wall and make me feel like I'm going mad.
Also, and I laugh at this, I can "hear" my computer working. Like when I use my mouse to scroll down the screen, I can hear the high pitched frequencies. Please tell me this happens to others!
I haven't followed up with the ringing in my ears for over 6 years. They told me there was nothing they could do about it so I saw no reason in going back.
I hope both stop instantly for you! It's a horrible feeling.
Liz

OP did you post awhile ago about dry skin?
Are your eyes dry? Gritty? Are you sipping fluids all day?
yes i did, have been using oils, exfoilating, and my skin is much better. not dry or itchy anymore. my eyes aren't too dry, but i wear contacts and they do get a little worn out. i do drink water all day. thanks.
i am starting to hear the rining even during the day when there is background noise. it's like the volume is turned up, i am new to this (since July) so i guess i should pay attention to what i might be doing that turns up the volume on the ringing. it's so loud.driving me nuts mostly when i am trying to sleep.
my verito hasn't returned but from what i have read / been told it will probably return.

Riboflavin is a B vitamin. You can't over dose on it because the body doesn't store it. I take 200 mg a day.
My doctor's name is Phillip Matorin and his partner is Dr. Pasha. Dr. Pasha has done great things with ears, nose and throat. They have a clinic that people come to from all over the world. My doctor had to fight with my insurance company to get my referral approved because that is where he wanted me to go after several ENTs before could not get to the bottom of my problem. It took 2 years and many nasty tests to get to the bottom of it. I was diagnosed a little over 5 years ago.
I have had vertigo so badly that I was once in bed for two weeks. I am now at the point where I know when I need to take the diuretics. I hate them because I have low blood pressure anyway so my BP drops into the 80s/50s. I get really tired.
I slipped in December and got negligent. I lost a day fighting the vertigo for it.
I can now easily eat 1500mg sodium a day and more if I am doing really good. I know now when I have to back down on the sodium.
Weather fronts can be a trigger. Excessive stress is a big time trigger. Colds and upper respiratory illnesses wreak havoc on me so I try really hard to avoid them at all costs. One of the reasons I like Ebaying is that I am not locked up in an office where everyone else is sick. A cold is a nuisance to most people. It can be debilitating to me.
I have Ativan on hand for the vertigo. It helps tremendously. Dr. Matorin recommended I use it in high stress times to help my triggers. I also find a moist heat heating pad wrapped on the back of my neck right up under my ears helps.
Hope this helps someone. "Don't be the one chasing the carrot. Be the one dangling the carrot." - Crazy Me!

chivas Never heard of the Riboflavin thing or the low salt diet.
I take a Centrum Vitamin will have to look to see if it has Riboflavin and how much. How much does one need?
I have had ringing in my ears for such a long time it rarely bothers me, the only time I even think about it is when someone mentions it. Like now LOL but I don't consider it bothersome for me anyway. I had an ear infection years ago when I had real bad allergies with cedar etc. The doctor said that it was due to the fluids that build up in the sinuses and sometimes backs up into the ear canal.
I have seen something at Walgreens called "Ring Relief" it supposed to help this. I never tried it. My doc told me too the taking aspirin can cause it too.
I take a Baby Aspirin daily and have for years because my doc told me that "it protects the heart" so here I sit with my protected heart and my ears ringing. :
I feel bad for folks that this bothers them so much they can't sleep.

it's surprising how little they know or can do for the condition.
i have definately learned to appreciate my inner ear and i had no idea such a sensitive area of the body could wreak such havoc so quickly.
my doctor ENT has such a non chalant attitude towards it, i might switch docs. he was of the 'it's not going to kill you' mindset. wonder if he would be that casual if he came down with it. i doubt.
i went on a deep sea fishing trip years ago and was rocking for 3 days straight. when i got home i had the same intense rocking sensation for about 2 weeks. even went to the doc for it. maybe i have always had something a little off with my inner ear?

I was diagnosed with menieres disease over 20 years ago. Mine is associated with an Arnold Chiari malformation. Many people with Chiari's have menieres as well. I used to use diuretics but find them ineffective anymore. I think what worked best for me over the long term was cutting out processed foods. That eliminated alot of salt and other triggers. I use ativan instead of meclizine for dizziness now. It's much easier to get used to so it doesn't make me goofy or hung over like the meclizine. It also helps me sleep better when I have dizziness lying down. I also keep compazine on hand for when its really bad and I get nauseous. My docs recently have come up with a new treatment which involves injecting yourself with histamines. It's supposed to be very effective but mine has been under control for a while so I haven't actually tried it. It could be something you may want to look into if it doesn't let up. It usually gets better over time...at least most people I've talked to about it suggest this anyway. Good luck. I hope you are feeling better soon. It seems as if there are several people here who have some good suggestions and experience with this disease. I am always available if you need some support. I know how horrible it can be at times to deal with this so feel free to contact me anytime.

My DH has Meniers. diagnosed 18 years ago. In the beginning it was so bad he could not lift his head. He could not function for days. Low salt diet and Meclazine are his stables. Over the years he managed to function. He can't lay flat. He sleeps in a semi sitting position. The ringing has decreased, but when a weather front moves in, he gets the pressure in his ears and he stops everything, In the past he wore earplugs for the ringing. He said it helps. He has lost most of his hearing in 1 ear, (he still has selective hearing)

This really hit home for me. I have had ear ringing (tinnitus) ever since a loud rock concert about 12 years ago. I also have benign positional paroxysmal vertigo. The way the ENT described it is when I move my head certain ways (like looking up) the crystals in my ear move and I get dizzy.
I recently went back to the ENT to have her do those maneuvers that are supposed to put the crystals back where they belong. They put a little device near my head that made a noise like a tuning fork. I was supposed to listen to that while hanging my head back over the table. When I asked if the noise would make the tinnitus worse, the technician didn't know so we stopped the procedure.
I have also tried at-home exercises for the vertigo but never kept up with them. If you Google BPPV you should find the exercises.
I have not found anything to help with the ringing and sometimes it really drives me crazy. I would also be interested in anything someone has tried that might work.

My ear has been ringing for over a year now.
My ENT feels it was a virus that more or less attacked my ear. This was after doing a variety of tests just to rule out other, albeit rare, conditions.
I've found that while I noticed it a lot at first, now I'm so used to it it's sorta like the refrigerator. When I think about it, I hear it. When I'm very tired, I hear it. Other than that, eh.
Keep trying the white noise machine. Coincidentally, I had gotten one for my husband a few months before my ear started ringing. At first I had weird dreams of water, but then I adjusted and it really helps.
The worst part for me, I guess, is that I do have some hearing loss in that ear because of the ringing, and it's not correctable, of course, because it's not my eardrum that is the issue. Since I teach school, I really have to listen carefully to my students.

Thanks love.what.u...... I can't tell you how many times my husband had to come and carry me out of my office at work when I had an attack. There I was, executive secretary to the V.P of a fairly large manufacturing corp. Altho they had money, the offices left much to be desired, and I'd be laying on the dirty carpet with my suit, nylons and heels on. Thankfully, I had an understanding boss.
18 years later, and I probably only get an attack every couple of years, I have become so good at knowing when one is coming on, I can stop it now with the pills. The after affects of the pills however, make you feel like a zombie.

I have both issues - vertigo and ringing. The vertigo I can tie to hormones ... the ear-ringing to anxiety. If you take some anti-anxiety meds, you may have the ringing disappear.

turn*style i am so sorry you have it that bad. i was reading about the condition and i couldn't believe what some people have been through. a girl i read about had to curl up in the fetal position on the floor for hours.
it is one of the worst things i have experienced.
and i have always hated rides..to be on one constantly was horrible.
only missed one day of work. every time i would put my head down slightly it would start up. everyone thought i was just dizzy but i can see how it would be hard to fathom unless you experience it yourself.
there is a procedure to stop the spinning but 65 percent of individuals end up with no hearing so docs are relunctant

Almost every day, I just wish for ONE DAY that the ringing would stop...... I have to have noise all the time, at night I have to have the tv on, and if I wake up, I have to turn on a very loud fan just to sleep.
As a side note, the reason they think Van Gogh cut off his ear was because he had Menieres.

I was diagnosed with Menieres years ago. I lost hearing in my left ear , but still have the ringing. The vertigo was so bad I begged my husband to shoot me. (I"m a wimp when it comes to pain).
I had dozens and dozens of attacks that would last for days. Back then, they had a patch to wear, but it was taken off the market, now, I get by with Meclizine.
It is one of the worst things I've ever dealt with, the vomiting, the spinning for hours on end, I wish it on no one either. It's like being in the worst drunken stage. I was always told to eat raw ginger, and stay away from salt. Nothing works for me except the pills, which knock you out for at least 24 hrs. I hope yours never gets as bad as mine.

mine sounds like high pitched crickets on crack. or the sound of telephone / electrical wires back in the day when they would emit that high pitched sound x 1000
it was a bit odd for me to drive also, when i would turn a corner a mild occurance of the vertigo would start but when it was at it's worst i would get rides.
i was treated by my ENT by flipping my head / body back quickly and doing some maneuvers...his theory was i had the crystals in my little pool and he was trying to get them to go back into the loop portion of my inner ear.
those sessions were horrible.

When your body is so disoriented it is throwing itself around trying to find balance it is horrible.
My doctor is a world recognized authority on Menieres and other ear balance disorders. He told me to just cut the salt back to 1000 mg a day and put me on diuretics until I got things under control.
I also have learned my triggers and have to watch for them and be proactive about it.
I wish you lots of luck. My doctor tells me I am one of the lucky ones because I can still function most of the time. This disorder can be debilitating.
