New to Specialty Services? Please Read This First.

Mar 1, 2004 1:57 PM
Hi everyone,

The Specialty Services board represents a growing community of people who sell customized items and services on eBay. I know its a little confusing because it may appear that this is a place to find answers to general questions about eBay.

If you have questions about a problem you are experiencing or need more information about how eBay works there are several ways to get results quickly.

First, you might want to take a look at the Answer Center where experienced members will be glad to help you.

Second, you can use our Live Help instant messenger service by returning to eBay's home page. The link to Live Help is located near the top of the page on the right.

Finally, you can find the answers to many questions by clicking on the Help link found at the top of every eBay page.

Thanks,

Maeve

Does anyone know who will insure an item over $7,500 and which is the best way to ship internationally? I really need to know ASAP.

I think this is interesting because I have come across different service providers imbedded within relevant product auctions (such as people who do machine quilting or people who custom-sew costumes within fabric or pattern topics). Even though I don't have an immediate need, I added those names to my Favs for future reference. Those types of things I would guess would work well because they are targeting people who are already familiar with the type of work they would be doing and therefore better able to distinguish the more qualified people from the less, and be better able to explain what THEY are looking for (providing a good service works two ways!). Also, like everything else eBay, the risk really lies with the SELLER, not the bidder! Once you've done the work or scheduled your time, if someone disappears on you, there's not much you can do about it and unlike product, you don't at least have something you can resell again; if you do, you're back at square one in that process. I'm not saying it won't work, it's just that services are a really sticky area that many people have good intentions, but don't understand. This includes buyers -- the same people who get irritated when they are asked to put down a deposit, define requirements up front, or sign an agreement are the SAME people who are difficult about accepting the project and payment. I'm not saying it won't work, because it's a great idea -- it's just that it's a little more complicated than selling products and the great 'monitoring' checks and balances we have for products aren't as easily used for services.

I represent a legal service that is not tangible, but is affordable and needed by many people. Is there a place to sell these services on eBay or will there be in the future?
If it is possible, any advice would be very helpful, as I have been told over and over by others that it can't be done...hmmm...an open market here maybe?

I'm using this area to make an observation about the fast-growing business of Photo-Enhancing. I have put a service up now because I'm shocked by the unbelievably bad photowork being done and overcharged for by "experts". As a computer specialist and artist (retired), I've been doing photo-enhancements for many years for family and friends, and in some cases, redoing work for no charge after somebody paid $100 or more for it already. Check me out via a "photo fix" search in "services".

Seems like this will be a great board for us in the service industry. I just opened an E Bay store and now in the process of figuring out how to upload my images for sale " buy now". Our products will be Promotional Products including embroidered or silk screened company logos on hats, shirts, jackets ect. Other items will include ad specialties with the companies name on it such as pens, mugs, calendars and much more.

Brand names on apparel will include Nike,Jeerzees,Bill Blass,Champion, ect.

I read the comments about buyers some good some bad. Our policy will be 50% down before any work is started on custom logoed items.

Right now if anyone can tell me where i can go find information about uploading images step by step to e-bay stores ( not acutions) would greatly appreciated. I guess it would be to easy if they put directions in "Maintain your Store". Most information seems to be geared towards acutions.

But i wish everyone in this category the best of luck. Would like to share info with any other business people out there.

Hello: I'm considering selling a variety of services on ebay, and would like to know where I might look to compare what is being sold, with what I want to sell, so that I can determine how much I should charge per hour or day, or project? Where on ebay can I look? I have looked under : Consulting, but found no services there, only items for Mary Kay etc.
If anyone has sold an eclectic service successfully, please let me know. I am new and need help...

hello, i am a new user of the disscussion boards. i have read the site rules and the stickies, i hope i have found the correct place to post my question.

my husband is currently serving in iraq and i do have the obligatory yellow rbbon car magnet. however, there is a van in town sporting a HUGE personalized window cling which has the name of her husband, his rank and the words 'husband, soldier, hero' . i stopped and left a post-it note asking where she got it and would she please share that contact with me. she told me she got it from an army base in arizona but she couldnt remember the name of the shop. arggghhh.

so my eyes are bleary after trudging through dozens and dozens of the hits that i googled. and regoogled and regoogled... you get the idea im sure. lol

has anyone seen anything like this for sale? if you have any clues gosh i would appreciate them!

thank you for your polite attention despite your busy schedules.

sincerely, anj119

It can be difficult to sell a service from a web page. Often more information and motivation is required. That's where a low-budget, high-quality video production company can help.

Offer your customers a free DVD or video business card. We'll help you produce a DVD video or video business card that will close sales and make your cash register ring!

Hi Everyone! I am not new to Speciality Services, however, I am new to the thread. I sell personalized custom printing (wedding invitations, photo thank you cards, photo christmas cards, business cards, everything!) I've been selling these products and have never had anyone complain about one item. Obviously, I do not accept refunds on my products as they are created just for the buyer and they are sent a proof prior to shipping. However, I have encountered someone who still feels she should get a refund as she bought the cards for her daughter and her daughter "doesn't like them." Mind you, she approved the proof and said "roll the presses...it's great." I kindly reiterated my "all sales are final" policy, but she continues to demand a refund. Anyone have any advice who has encountered a similar situation? I take pride in not only my product but my exceptional feedback rating as well! I don't make huge $$ doing this-I enjoy it! And this is my "night" job! ;)

Hi:
My husband and I are discussing selling an eBay business. Does anyone out there have any input? I'm sure its been done but we need to know what rules there are and so on. We know one cannot sale or transfer the feedback rating and/or user id but we sure could use some help. We would be most appreciattive. I'm going to have my 7th hip replacement around the 1st of the year and we need to simplify our lives. We've been in the retail business in some way or the other for over 35 years. So we have a lot of knowledge and also tangibles. Would appreciate any help.
