Dear All,

I live in New York City and have been recently interested in the hand puppets from Taiwan. I'm not sure if this is the correct section to post this up but I am trying to look for any sellers out there who lives in Taiwan and has access to purchasing these hand puppets.

The puppet that I am looking for is: http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b17/jpop_fan/P1040148.jpg also known as "Ha Bai Lon Gwen"

If anyone can be of help in regards to purchasing these puppets please let me know, thank you very much!

I have one authentic one, with a hard head, painted face, traditional clothing; I have had him with me for about 25 years, and he was old, from an antique store there when I bought him -- a judge.

The one in the photo looks like it is made for quick sales, not for use, along the line of the "bleeding goth stuffed animal" style, perhaps as seen in Japan.

I thought I could be of help as I have a hand puppet from Taiwan, where I lived for ten years and wish I still lived. I know a fair bit about opera, puppetry, performances for the gods and the dead; however I don't know that that is what you are looking for.

Where did you find this photograph? How?

The name of the one in the photo is most probably "Hei Bai [Long Gwen -- which I would have to do some reading to figure out what it is supposed to represent -- Lung/Long (Dragon) Wen maybe, Kwei maybe????)" "Hei Bai" means "Black and White," which fills the bill here.

I've seen that hand puppet before.  It stands about almost the size of a small child and the eyes and mouth moves.  The head is carved out of wood and the hand has these finger joints that you can pose.

It's really so much larger than the traditional size.

I think you have to go to Taiwan to get them.
