**NEW** Minimum donation slashed to $1, more time to make your donations

Oct 1, 2009 7:54 AM
Hi everyone:
I am very excited to tell you about two big changes to eBay Giving Works that we have been discussing on this board for some time. You’ve been asking for them, and now they’re here!

What’s changing?
First, starting today the eBay Giving Works minimum donation has been slashed from $5 to $1 for each Community Seller listing that sells. For as little as $1 (or the donation percentage you select, whichever is greater) you can donate to your favorite nonprofit whenever you sell on eBay. This change starts immediately, applying to all eBay Giving Works listings that sell on or after October 1.

Second, the automatic collection date for eBay Giving Works donations is being extended from the second Monday after a listing ends to the fourth Monday after a listing ends. As always, donations can always be paid any time after an eBay Giving Works listings ends (you don’t have to wait for the automatic collection). And donation minimums and collections dates do not apply to nonprofits Direct Selling on eBay to raise funds for themselves.

Why are we making these changes?
We recognize that the old minimum donation was excluding a lot of sellers whose items can’t support a $5 donation each, especially in this economy. By dropping the minimum to $1 per listing – and gearing our systems to handle the smaller amounts efficiently – we are hoping to make eBay Giving Works accessible for more sellers who want to help.

We also know that the 21-day hold PayPal sometimes places has meant that we have been collecting some donations before funds are freed up in the seller's PayPal account. The extra two weeks here is designed to give sellers more time to receive their funds from PayPal (and the buyer too), before we collect donations.

What’s next?
As you know, we are constantly working on ideas to make the program better, and we roll them out as soon as they’re ready. We have a stack of new projects that we’re working on now, but we still want more suggestions: many eBay Giving Works changes come directly from your feedback. Please keep sharing your ideas for making this program better.

Questions about these changes?
I’ll do my best to respond to questions here as quickly as I can, however MissionFish Community Care can give you fast answers to any questions you have.

We hope these changes make eBay Giving Works better for you. Thanks for everything you do to support your favorite causes on eBay!

These are some excellent changes to a wonderful program; I'm amazed that you can process a plethora of $1 donations without going bankrupt. That shows there is great efficiency at work here - keep up the good work!

I am waiting for inkfrog to put the $1 change into affect, thin I will start using it on all my listings.

I believe that I will even be able to raise my prices by $1 to cover it.

My charity is High Desert Homeless Services in Victorville CA.

Hey windchimeman:
We spoke to the folks over at inkFrog today, and their system does fully support eBay Giving Works. The minimum donation is calculated by our system, so you should be able to list through inkFrog for charity whenever you're ready.

All the best,

I am unable to make the $1 donation. Each time I set an auction up, it sets the amount to 10%. I can find nowhere that this procedure is explained nor can I change my charity.

Why does this all seem so convoluted? I just want a simple menu with a simple manner of choosing.

This would have been a fabulous promotion if it was only $1.00 per item.......but if you read the promo its 10% or $1.00 which ever is greater......but the min is set at $1.00 I think a lot more people would have went nuts listing at this time of the year if it was truly only $1.00

SO, WE CANNOT DONATE A 1.00 PER ITEM. IT IS STILL 10%. LOOKS LIKE THEY WOULD BE HAPPY WITH 1.00 AN ITEM. I LIST ABOUT 20 ITEMS A WEEK. 20.00 x 4 IS 80.00. WHY IS THIS NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

I would have listed about 2000 items if it was only $1.00. The tax write off would not even apply to me as I live in Canada, but never the less I would happy to do it. Of course the $1.00 would only be paid if the items sell, but still it would have been a fantastic promotion instead of just a good promo.

REALLY GREAT. but this new listing where you can put on ads for only 5 cents when designating to a certain charity, does not work. Charged full price. A lot of these promotions never work. Again for last 9 months I get pained by when anything I do having to sign on and getting a blank page. I complain to deaf ears. so much on E-bay does not work well. This is just another problem, promises and yet, does not function they way they say. They need some new technitions, that know how to program. Have them set up a website to work it as what works and what does not.

Too bad we can't set it up for $1.00. I have over 400 listings and I was going to do all new items $1.00.

My lowest items are $14.95 and I have a lot of $19.95 to $24.95, and i am not willing to do 10%.....why not make it 5% and I would do that.

Besides all the fees I have an employee who does my shipping so no way can I do 10%. Perhaps I should fire the employee.

Looks like this $1 thin bit mission fish in the ass.

They should set it up for $1.00. If they can work with $1.00 why not just make it that. Kind of deceptive.

I think they cost themselves 10 of thousands of dollars by misleading us.

People think in concrete terms and if you say "Giving Works minimum donation has been slashed from $5 to $1" they are going to think that they can set it up for $1.00 total.

That's what I thought, "$1.00! I could add a dollar to my items and eat the small difference."

Well as Moma always said, "Greedy is as greedy does!"

Re: **NEW** Minimum donation slashed to $1, more time to make your donations

Hi everyone:
Thanks for the feedback about both of the eBay Giving Works initiatives happening right now. I'll try to speak to both of them here:

New $1 minimum donation
I appreciate you sharing misunderstandings about what the minimum donation actually is. We've tried to make it as clear as possible that the minimum is either $1 or 10% (1% in Motors), whichever is greater. However obviously there's more we should do to explain this better.

At this point our program doesn't support flat amount donations from a listing. Since 2003 we've been built on the "give a percentage" model. That said, we definitely hear that you'd like to be able to give an actual $1 from each listing (rather than "at least $1"). We'll be looking at what we can do to make an option like this available in the future.

Windchime man, since late October,we've been offering a minimum donation of 1% (or $1) in eBay Motors. Going forward, we'll be looking at how that is received by Motors sellers, and assess whether it's something that can be expanded to other categories. I'll count you in the "pro" list for that idea.

$0.05 listing promotion
maryjaneboutique, the way we're executing the $0.05 listing promotion, you'll be getting your insertion fee credits in early 2010. The time lag between when you post your listing and when the credit is applied is the result of operational limits in how we're doing this promo. I know that ideally we'd get you this credit sooner. Please know we'll be doing everything we can to make those credits happen as quickly as possible.

I hope this helps. Thanks again for your questions!

I finally figured out how to set mine up. I am suggesting that since the same question seems to come up again & again, that you make the instructions much clearer in the ebay links that give the information. I even contacted online support & they had NO clue how to set it up.

On another note, mine is set up to purchase blankets for a dog rescue. Since the blankets are already purchased I had to raise the price by 50 cents in order to donate 10%. You might want to think about setting up your giving works program to just donate the item.
