August 20 Expirations

Aug 21, 2008 4:50 PM
I wanted to address all of the board posts regarding the expiration emails that were sent last night.

These actions were part of our continued effort to focus on delivering the highest quality buyer traffic to eBay via affiliate marketing. To that end, we’ve been analyzing our program closely over the last few months. I know there have been a number of requests to provide insight into all of the metrics via which we are evaluating affiliate traffic, but unfortunately there’s an active black hat community that is pretty effective at exploiting these insights so we can’t go into details on them. However, what I can say is that in addition to earnings per click metrics (EPC), we look at a variety of metrics to see how users are behaving when they come to eBay.com – how engaged they are with our site, and whether the affiliate link clicks lead to incremental buying activity. As we’ve done this, we have seen a big discrepancy in how interested and active the traffic is that comes to eBay from different sources.

Our responsibility in the affiliate marketing channel is to allocate our resources to best drive incremental demand to our sellers. To that end, we need to focus on partners who have had the most success in engaging users who become some of our best buyers on eBay. I understand that these actions do have a very real impact on some of our affiliates who have been working with us over the years. For that, I sincerely apologize, but these decisions are made in the best interest of eBay's sellers and the overall health of our affiliate program.

We want to be very clear. Affiliates who received these messages of expiration last night are not being asked to stop sending traffic to us due to fraudulent activity or violations of the terms of service. For those of you who received the message, commissions are not being reversed, and you will be paid for all valid traffic you have sent to us to date, and for the next 7 days.

Sincerely,
Steve

Wow...I just joined the EPN and am starting to wonder if I should take the time to put forth the effort. I agree, those of you who blog should be getting the word out about this. When I was doing my research about EPN everything I read painted a rosey picture of the program. Obviously I didn't research long enough. I am going to stop developing my website and find another program.

Sorry to all of you who got the boot.

Well I am sure glad I found this thread. Was a royal pain getting setup with EPN, was auto refused 4 times as I tried differant things to get an account. ( They did not look at the site as I was banned as soon as I applied, never had an account before ) And worse I could not even ask why as I could never validate the account as they never sent a email. Then finally I get an account and read this.

I have done a great deal of affiliate marketing and I assure you anyone with a brain will NOT join EPN after this totally unacceptable event.

I gather no one can figure out WHY, both LONG term, short term memmbers, both big and small got the axe. And it seems the blanket reason is engagement, and as many have pointed out thats Ebays job.

So to end, I real feel for you honest hard working affiliates who just got axed. I think most have figured out it would be insane to put effort into expanding if you did not get axed, as you may be axed next month, and for god sakes do not do any changes as that may cause you to be axed.

And of course as word spreads no sane person will START a new account with EPN.

When youj dont treat you affiliates with respect and have no regard for their efforts you die. EPN has sealed the coffin.

Good luck to any who hang around.

I will be looking on this board for recommends to replace EPN.

P.S. Having read around EPN and affiliates real concern is the cookie stuffing. EPN is the #1 target for black hat cookie stuffing. Now is Ebay taking LEGAL action against the thiefs or is their focus on screwing hard working honest affiliates?

No I don't think anyone that had their accounts expired received the email (including me). I am curious to see how this plays out.

I think when Steve says they have been analysing the "quality" of traffic sent to eBay what he really means is.. "once eBay pays an affiliate for a new customer to eBay, does that customer use eBay direct (www.ebay.com) from that point on, or does eBay continue to have to pay that affiliate for that customer's continuing business.. if the latter, then eBay is going to be losing margin alot on that customer - that is the only explanation I can think of for eBay wiping out just about all the BANS / niche sites.. because alot of the BANS customers continue to use the BANS site to find eBay stuff that they want (quite simply because the sites usually target a very specific niche - a niche that the eBay interface makes it very difficult for the customer to find). What eBay doesnt seem to recognize is that those customers will just not bother to look for their niche items on eBay without these niche sites.. and also that quite often such niche items can represent large amounts of money - because the items are rare, or costly, or because those who want those niche items are going to keep coming back to get more..
This action is crazy by eBay - it would be similar if Amazon.com started to ban specialist books websites.. which I pray Amazon.com would never do

In my opinion, I think the traffic quality analysis that you are referring to is more along the lines of: "how much does this new customer [that the affiliate brought to eBay] continue to buy on eBay -- whether or not continuing to come through the affiliate's sites/links". I would imagine that if the customer continues to click through to eBay via the affiliate's site/links before making many purchases, then there must be a good reason; the affiliate must be offering something to the customer that isn't being offered on eBay (or that the customer doesn't know they can get directly on eBay). I would think that eBay would be happy to continue compensating said affiliate in these cases. After all, it's revshare commissions at that point: a slice of income eBay has already received from the seller.

Call me naive, but that's just my uninformed $0.02.

This is exactly what I strive for. Give them some value that eBay doesn't. The perfect eBay affiliate model if you ask me. Ga head, ask me.....
