August 20 Expirations

Aug 21, 2008 4:50 PM
I wanted to address all of the board posts regarding the expiration emails that were sent last night.

These actions were part of our continued effort to focus on delivering the highest quality buyer traffic to eBay via affiliate marketing. To that end, we’ve been analyzing our program closely over the last few months. I know there have been a number of requests to provide insight into all of the metrics via which we are evaluating affiliate traffic, but unfortunately there’s an active black hat community that is pretty effective at exploiting these insights so we can’t go into details on them. However, what I can say is that in addition to earnings per click metrics (EPC), we look at a variety of metrics to see how users are behaving when they come to eBay.com – how engaged they are with our site, and whether the affiliate link clicks lead to incremental buying activity. As we’ve done this, we have seen a big discrepancy in how interested and active the traffic is that comes to eBay from different sources.

Our responsibility in the affiliate marketing channel is to allocate our resources to best drive incremental demand to our sellers. To that end, we need to focus on partners who have had the most success in engaging users who become some of our best buyers on eBay. I understand that these actions do have a very real impact on some of our affiliates who have been working with us over the years. For that, I sincerely apologize, but these decisions are made in the best interest of eBay's sellers and the overall health of our affiliate program.

We want to be very clear. Affiliates who received these messages of expiration last night are not being asked to stop sending traffic to us due to fraudulent activity or violations of the terms of service. For those of you who received the message, commissions are not being reversed, and you will be paid for all valid traffic you have sent to us to date, and for the next 7 days.

Sincerely,
Steve

Steve said:

I want to reiterate that we're looking for you to drive users to eBay who are going to be engaged with the eBay site and who are making incremental purchases based on your affiliate marketing efforts.

Steve, again... please put this into a measureable goal for us!

I am just going to reiterate what everyone else in this forum has already said... I think you all have really stubbed your own toe with this and it wont heal.

You have quite effectively driven all professional affiliates away with the lack of feasible response and complete disrespect for everyone who follows the rules. Many of whom were not part of the cuts today, but will no longer focus on driving traffic to a program that will not be in their portfolio tomorrow, for no fault of their own.

Very well said. I want to be able to sleep at night without wondering if my visitors are engaging enough.

eBay can engage all they want with my current sites. They won't be getting anymore from me and in reality they have just created an army of affialites who are going to be feeding traffic to the very competitors they are trying to be like.

Many of their listings that show in the organic search do so because so many affilites link to them. That dynamic is going to change.

Steve, would you and EPN consider giving your affiliates some insight as to what you expect of us?

How can it be that providing thousands in winning bid revenue isn't enough for you?

I've heard many people say that they'd love for EPN to can the ACRU system altogether and just make earnings on winning bids alone. I don't see how ebay could possibly lose in that scenario.

There should be an opt out of ACRU option when signing up for EPN that guarantees affiliates membership status as long as they abide by the TOS.
Is there any hope for any of us affiliates that we might proceed with EPN with confidence?

I was at a conference earlier this year and a guy from Linkshare was talking. One of the questions was roughly "is it a good idea to use affiliates to get your site going and then dump therm" and his answer was roughly "that is the worst idea possible since all those affiliates will be totally pissed and send their traffic elsewhere while still competing with you". I guess I am seeing this in action right now.

What I want to know is, why terminate our account? If our sites aren't doing what ebay likes then how about you suspend those campaigns. Give us a chance to start over with them. Or even start new ones that are more suited to what ebay wants. (of course we have nothing but vague guidlines to go on at this point)

Devastating... I've been sick to my stomach all day.

They already did, weren't you paying attention? He wants you to drive engaging visitors to ebay. Can't be any clearer than that ;)

Sorry, I hate people who do this, but I have to:

in·cre·ment (nkr-mnt, ng-)
n.
1. The process of increasing in number, size, quantity, or extent.
2. Something added or gained: a force swelled by increments from allied armies.
3. A slight, often barely perceptible augmentation.
4. One of a series of regular additions or contributions: accumulating a fund by increments.
5. Mathematics A small positive or negative change in the value of a variable.

Steve, couldn't you have informed these partners which stores of theirs were performing poorly so they could archive some affiliate stores temporarily while they work on them?

Shouldn't there be a dashboard somewhere that gauges the performance of our individual campaigns?

I know as an ebay seller I can see how I rank in various different ways.

This action really makes no sense at all to me and I'm at a point where I don't want to continue. Can you please be more committed to this thread and provide us with more information?

It's a sad day when good, honest people who have invested thousands of hours and years of dedication to helping a business like Ebay profit, are told that honesty and "playing by the rules" are no longer top priorities.

No warning, no attempt to help those affected by giving them clearer advice, no clear cut guidelines and no mercy.

I feel bad for you guys. The last time I saw good people treated this badly, Lorena Bobbit was involved.

I wonder what would happen at eBay if all active affiliates shut-down their sites for a month?

or until they put it in the TOS what they expect from us, I think its going to go that way anyway Dan.

Just got this email. Love how they say they've asked me to stop sending traffic. Yeah, like I had a choice.

Dear Jay,

Thank you for your message.

Our goal in affiliate marketing is to allocate our resources to best
drive incremental demand to our sellers. We have been analyzing our
program closely over the last few months. In addition to looking at
earnings per click metrics (EPC), we look at a variety of metrics to see
how users are behaving when they come to eBay.com - how engaged they are
with our site, and whether the affiliate link clicks lead to incremental
buying activity. As we've done this, we have seen a big discrepancy in
how interested and active the traffic is that comes to eBay from
different sources.

As a result, we have asked a small subset of affiliates to stop sending
traffic to eBay. We understand that these actions do have a very real
impact on some of you who have been working with us over the years. For
that, we sincerely apologize, but these decisions are made in the best
interest of eBay's sellers and the overall health of our affiliate
program. We also want to clarify that you are not being asked to stop
sending traffic to us due to fraudulent activity or violations of the
terms of service. You will get paid for all the valid traffic sent to
date, and for the next 7 days.

At this time, we unfortunately cannot reconsider our decision on your
account. We will contact you again if we see an opportunity to work
together again in the future.
