August 20 Expirations

Aug 21, 2008 4:50 PM
I wanted to address all of the board posts regarding the expiration emails that were sent last night.

These actions were part of our continued effort to focus on delivering the highest quality buyer traffic to eBay via affiliate marketing. To that end, we’ve been analyzing our program closely over the last few months. I know there have been a number of requests to provide insight into all of the metrics via which we are evaluating affiliate traffic, but unfortunately there’s an active black hat community that is pretty effective at exploiting these insights so we can’t go into details on them. However, what I can say is that in addition to earnings per click metrics (EPC), we look at a variety of metrics to see how users are behaving when they come to eBay.com – how engaged they are with our site, and whether the affiliate link clicks lead to incremental buying activity. As we’ve done this, we have seen a big discrepancy in how interested and active the traffic is that comes to eBay from different sources.

Our responsibility in the affiliate marketing channel is to allocate our resources to best drive incremental demand to our sellers. To that end, we need to focus on partners who have had the most success in engaging users who become some of our best buyers on eBay. I understand that these actions do have a very real impact on some of our affiliates who have been working with us over the years. For that, I sincerely apologize, but these decisions are made in the best interest of eBay's sellers and the overall health of our affiliate program.

We want to be very clear. Affiliates who received these messages of expiration last night are not being asked to stop sending traffic to us due to fraudulent activity or violations of the terms of service. For those of you who received the message, commissions are not being reversed, and you will be paid for all valid traffic you have sent to us to date, and for the next 7 days.

Sincerely,
Steve

To put it in straight english, what the guy is saying is this;

If your customers don't continue to buy at ebay (meaning going there on their own instead of using your aff link each time) after the initial purchase they don't want your traffic.

That's how I read it anyway.

I know I'm not going to bother sending 1 click to ebay. Plenty of other merchants to send traffic too.

"You have quite effectively driven all professional affiliates away"

True, but hey this was so eBay could have better quality buyers. Who needs professionals for that? (geesh)

And also true, they do not need power sellers and they do not need investors either. What they do need is to keep the cash instead of sharing if with people that participated in helping them get that cash in the first place. Because they need to spend it to fund (what was that, uhm fruity advance creatives and only fairies know what else). So who needs affiliates that actually generate sales. Why pay them for all that substandard traffic that does not buy anything, I mean all those winning bid amounts that have to be shared from all this traffic that does not buy anything! My GOD IT IS A TRAGEDY, eBay is being ripped off by scoundrels.

Yes, I have been searching for days for a Amazon RSS parsing script with search. I know one must exist somewhere out there. I hate to reinvent the wheel.

Ok... let me see if I've got this straight...

eBay is basically saying "Only send us good traffic; don't send us no bad traffic."

How the HELL am I supposed to know the nature or intent of the people I'm driving to eBay before I drive them there???

It's our job as affiliates to send traffic to eBay listings. Period. It's EBAY'S JOB to sell them on the product.

It sounds like eBay expects affiliates to do eBay's marketing job for them, but without any indication of what the benchmarks or constraints are.

Anyone still left after this purge: don't DARE to change anything you're doing. Since no one knows how eBay is defining quality traffic, and they sure as hell aren't sharing that information, any changes you make in the nature of traffic you're sending to eBay could cause you to step on that invisible trip wire that will get you banned.

Seriously, this is friggin' ludicrous! Axing affiliates left and right without ANY clue to affiliates of what the magical mysterious rules of the game are!

As one that was expired and always played by the rules, I would appreciate if anyone wouldn't mind sharing some good, well run affiliate programs? You can send me a message through my ebay id if you don't want to list anything here.

Thanks

Hey Steve,

I understand you are the messenger so could you please go back to your committee meeting and tell them no one still understands what you said.

The smell of class action is getting stronger and I thought I needed a new septic system.

Thank you

Now everyone. We all know this stinks.I just dropped a quite interesting blog post about this that will make the world aware of what type of company ebay really is.

Steve,

I know that this was more than likely not your decision to drop all the ethical epn affiliates and piss off half the world.Ebay's affiliate team needs to realize that most of us have no control of our customers buying habits. What do you expect us to do?Make a banner that says do not click this link unless your going to go on a retarded buying spree with ebay?

You should take this opportunity to pass on all this feedback to the upper management team before its too late. This decision will not only hurt most of our pockets but it will hurt ebay in the long run trust me.I have already recieved 92 unique blog posts about my feedback about your company and I just submitted the blog less than 3 hours ago.

I want to reiterate that we're looking for you to drive users to eBay who are going to be engaged with the eBay site and who are making incremental purchases based on your affiliate marketing efforts.

And how do you expect us all to control our visitors and make them keep coming back? It's our job to get you the customers. It's your job to make them want to keep using eBay. Based on your fee changes, it looks like you guys are the ones that really suck at making your visitors be engaged and make incremental purchases.

we need to focus on partners who have had the most success in engaging users who become some of our best buyers on eBay.

To translate that in to English: Screw all you affiliates, drop dead and rot!!!

we look at a variety of metrics to see how users are behaving when they come to eBay.com – how engaged they are with our site, and whether the affiliate link clicks lead to incremental buying activity.

How about dumping the EPS number and instead give us a quality score! And tell us where we need to be in the score to not worry about geting screwed by you guys come the 20th of next month!!

It's too late. It's already spreading across the net like a Southern California wild-fire.

I have received dozens of emails about this today alone. Everyone from New Zealand to New York.

I will repeat what I already said. When everyone in the world say's you're wrong, YOU ARE WRONG!

ePN is easier to program for and pays more than Amazon, but stability has apparently become a factor. I would bet my right-lung that I WILL NOT wake up in the morning to a "Dear Dan" email from Amazon. I can't say that about ePN.
