No Traffic to Own Site from Twitter

There is conversation on another forum where an affiliate had his account suspended for quality review for sending traffic from twitter to his OWN site and not to eBay.

Below is eBays resonse to the review:

We have completed the investigation of your account and decided to unsuspend it. It is now active again. However, please be advised that as of August 20, 2009 publishers are no longer allowed to post on twitter.com or any other social network (facebook.com), even if they are merely sending traffic to their own sites. Please remove all your links on these sites and stop those campaigns. If you continue to receive traffic from these sites, your account will be expired and all your pending commissions will be reversed.

I have not seen anything in the terms about sending traffic to your own site and I would like a pink to please point all of us to the area in the terms that say we can not send traffic from twitter to our own site.

I understand not sending it straight to eBay, but telling somebody they can't send traffic to there own site from twitter goes against anything that was posted in this forum about it and if the terms have changed, affiliates need to be made aware of this.

Phew! I can breathe again. B-)

Although the way this seems to have been handled frightens the life out of me! Surely there aren't untrained staff given the power of termination who just make up their own interpretation of ePN rules as they go along?

I sure hope there were some other issues besides this Twitter linking to merit the affiliate's account to be actually terminated and force an appeal etc.

But then again some people reckon it's best to shoot first and ask questions later...

Hi everyone,

To clarify our policy allows social network traffic to be sent to your own site, just not directly to eBay. The blog post is correct. We are looking into the context of that response from Network Quality.

Thanks,
Casey

This is an important issue and needs to be clarified.

You have the EPn blog saying one thing, then you have EPN Network Quality saying they will terminate the account if you do what the EPN blog is saying.

Unfortunately for all of us, this kind of thing is not an isolated incident.

yup, and since pinks appear here so infrequently, who knows when we'll get a response....

I think that the EPN person needs to read their own blog.
From Monday, December 21st, 2009 - 10 Tips to Improve Your Social Media Strategy ( http://www.ebaypartnernetworkblog.com/en/hints-and-tips/10-tips-to-improve-your-social-media-strategy/ )

"Although eBay Partner Network does not allow our partners to directly promote eBay through social media arenas, we want to make sure you know that you can drive traffic to your own website(s) through appropriate social media strategies."

Yes, the quality person is uninformed and the problem is they have the power to zap the account even though the affiliate did not violate the rules.

Interesting.

If I read the op correctly your saying EPN members aren't allowed to get traffic to their sites from twitter and be in the program?

That doesn't sound correct. Every major personality is on Twitter and services like Google's Feedburner service now auto-post your RSS feed to twitter if you activate the feature.

I'd love clarification.
