RSS Feed Bug - Urgent!!
Jan 26, 2010 08:43 PM
Helo,

Today I noticed I had lost 95% of my clicks.
When Investigated I found a lot of clicks either going to an error page saying "Page Not Responding":

http://pages.ebay.com/messages/page_not_responding.html?eBayErrorEventName=p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fv%7F.rpn372-2010.01.26.21.39.46.476.MST

or a front page like this:

http://www.ebay.com/?amp;ipn=psmain&icep_vectorid=238401&campid=12312312&customid=&kw=rss&icep_item=370326017662&mtid=824&toolid=10005&kwid=902099

What I found on one of my sites was that if I removed the campaign ID, clicks went through to the correct product... but that is not really a viable work around is it!

I then trawled a load of other sites that are not mine by looking for footprints from BANS (which are easy to find) and saw a lot of other sites with the same issue, in fact, one of the demo sites on the BANS website has this problem... try clicking a golf club listing on this page:

http://www.gameimprovementirons.com/clubs/adams-idea-a2-irons.html

I am surprised no one else has posted about this yet... given the loss of earnings I have personally experienced, and the number of other peoples sites I have found with this same issue I would have thought there would have been other people raising it too.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem may be?

Thanks,

The updated RSS Feeds that reflect the new link generator structure, with added parameters to help generate higher earnings. Not helping me I have been getting 0.00 every since 26th January when my links start going to Page Not Responding.

You can also just unclick the "cloak affiliate links" option on the setup page (#4 Affiliate Details box). If you're short on time to make the changes in the fix, this will get you back in business quickly.

FYI, one of the BANS forum members has provided a fix for the U.S. link cloaking problem. I, and others, have implemented it, and it's working.

Please share it.

I just got back in town from a funeral only to see that some of my sites are DEAD!!!

All of my BANS US sites are broken.

All of my BANS UK and BANS AU sites work.

All of my homebrew RSS parser site works.

I'm exhausted and at a loss right now. Can someone post a link to the BANS fix for this? Can someone also post a link to the details about the change that ebay has done to cause this?

My sites all use my Wordpress WordBay plugin and seem to link through OK (I use a header redirect to rewrite the link) and I haven't been able to reproduce the problem, but my stats tell a different story - massive slump in hits and earnings since... you guessed it... the 25th. Can't add anything to the discussion other than to echo that there's something fishy...

I have been corresponding with some other users in the McJiffy EASy forum from CA they don't have a problem with their website, they said when they click on a item on my site it takes them to the correct item on eBay.ca. they told me its, something wrong with the eBay.com. so I guest it don't have any thing to do with the .htaccess.

pawnshopsnet, I sent you an email with a copy of the {QUERY_STRING} in the .htaccess to see if you can help me to find a solution to the problem. You seen to be very good at these codes. My problem is with McJiffy EASy I don't have bans.

If your using Bans, it's not going to update unless they owners of Bans do it, and from what I understand, they no longer support the program.

I'd be switching pretty quick to something else that is supported.

We believe the third party tools being used to publish content from the ePN RSS Feeds will update as necessary, if not already, to account for this new link structure and direct users to the correct pages on eBay. Also, as recommended by others in this thread it’s a good idea to consult the resources available through these third parties for further assistance. Please note that there are no issues with the RSS Feed URLs and links when taken directly from the publisher interface.

Thanks again for your patience,

Casey

How long will it take for these third party tools to update. I am still having problem, losing vistors and
losing money.

Have to admit it’s been eerily quite from the pinks on this board lately.

Kind of makes you wonder what big announcement is coming next.

I can't help but be a little cynical on the topic of customer service. I have been reading posts similar to the one pawnshopnet wrote above (#66) for going on two years now, but nothing seems to change. The occasional promise is made, but they never come to fruition.
Had to try again as it's been awhile........

Casey,

Also from the intro for this board -

"and provide us constructive feedback".

Better monitoring of the board or emails for problems. Two and half days of no response from a pink to a problem that knock some off line completely and hurts consumer confidence in a site.

Along the same line the lack of any pinks for more than a month here should be addressed.

Next time give us some kind of notice beforehand so we know what to expect! And what about the numerous emails I had sent asking for help which all went unanswered?

Casey, Patience was wearing thin. Not everyone was effected this time with the change. It's hard for someone to help when people when we are using the same feeds are were not affected. I use at least four different methods with the feeds and several different hosting setups and was not effected at all. We need to know when things are changing. How about a layout of the new feeds and parameters. We hate to feel like mushrooms.

Hi everyone,

We’d like to thank you for your patience through the recent change made to the RSS Feed links that has impacted some of you, and apologize for the delayed response on the boards as well as the lack of a proactive message to announce this change. There was some miscommunication here on when this change was planned to roll out. Essentially we updated the links in the RSS Feeds to reflect the new link generator structure which we implemented a while back. This new link structure includes added parameters that we plan to use for some optimization initiatives to further enhance our tools and most importantly help generate higher earnings for our partners.

We believe the third party tools being used to publish content from the ePN RSS Feeds will update as necessary, if not already, to account for this new link structure and direct users to the correct pages on eBay. Also, as recommended by others in this thread it’s a good idea to consult the resources available through these third parties for further assistance. Thanks again for your patience,

Casey

More than likely, something on the server changed.
Apache,PHP,cpanel, etc.. update, who knows.

Your scripts are using the same RSS feeds everybody else is and the majority of them using them are not having problems, myself included.

This would lead me to believe the scripts your using or your host is causing the problem.

In either case, eBay will not be able to fix your problem.
