Contest to all users: Guess why eBay cancelled my listings? All 3 of them.

Nov 2, 2009 5:55 PM
At 21:41 eastern time Sunday NOV/01 , I had three items running in my store.

By 21:46 I had none.

All three listings were stopped by eBay in violation of a policy.

As a result, eBay clocked my account at one policy violation strike and suspended me from listing anything for three days.

Please note that eBay has known for several months what my listings were saying and did not take any actions whatsoever before yesterday.

Two of the items were relistings of items in my UNSOLD FILE. The third was a new item created from a relisted older item and so is not viewable.

The two relisted items were 160362560854 and 150372945101. They were put back into system at the end of October.

I invite interested users to guess what violation eBay used to stop all three listings.

Please only give one guess. I'll be here to repond to any entries.

If nothing comes in, this will quickly disappear into the back pages of this forum.

Please note that the same policy violation was used on all three items.

If you do not wish/like to use PAYPAL, you must ask for other payment method that I will accept

Thank you for your response, but just quoting a line from my listing does not state what the exact policy violation eBay is stating I am breaking.

If you believe it is this phrase, what policy am I breaking?

Don't take oldspartantrader's winnings away - they got it correct by just quoting a line from your listing ...

It is pretty straight forward Rick ...

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/accepted-payments-policy.html

it says:

Communicating about payment methods

Sellers need to say in their listing specifically which payment methods they accept and only offer payment methods approved by eBay. Sellers aren't allowed to:

  • Ask buyers to contact them for additional payment methods

  • Offer a payment method to some buyers and not to others

  • Discourage buyers from using any payment method the seller specified in the listing

  • Ask buyers to pay using a method not mentioned in the listing.

This applies to all transaction-related correspondence between a seller and buyer as well as the listings.

    To post #5:

    Thanks for your response.

Again, you are showing a list of possible violations.

If you believe that this umbrella set of violations applies to my listing(s). Which one do you believe eBay used?

    To (user) KC;

I forgot to add that eBay does not only allow electronic payments.

This is a possible misconception with many sellers and buyers.

Judging by your posts, IT sounds like IT's a stupid reason.

So....I'll guess that they don't like the use of the word "DELL" if you're not selling a computer.

No, I wouldn't call it a stupid reason.

And it not something way out there. If I was able to give third item, you would not have given this response.

Third item was a comic fanzine and not a Dell (publisher) comic book like the other two items.

Please note that the items themselves were not in violation of policy.

Time for a tune and off to bed.

I got a big post for tomorrow (now today locally).

I see 3 violations right off the bat:

If you do not wish/like to use PAYPAL, you must ask for other payment method that I will accept. See post #5 for specific policy.

INSURANCE: $2 US extra. Sellers can no longer ask the buyer to pay for insurance. Sellers may include the cost as part of their shipping/handling charge, but it cannot be a separate charge. Went into effect last month, I'll have to look up the specific link.

Not responsible for lost or damaged package with no insurance. Went into effect same time as the optional insurance policy.

They may also have ended your listings because of your wording about buyers leaving less than 5 DSRs. There's a clause (also in policy referenced above) about negative wording, but I don't remember the details. This one is just a guess, though, I think your DSR info is fine but eBay may have interpreted it as a rant.

    Rick -

Those are not "possible violations" you have clearly violated the following:

Ask buyers to contact them for additional payment methods

This is not my policy ... this is eBay's policy that you are clearly not following.

Ask buyers to pay using a method not mentioned in the listing.

The following statement that was taken from your listing clearly violoates both of these policies.

PAYMENT: US funds only. By PAYPAL is one way. If you do not wish/like to use PAYPAL, you must ask for other payment method that I will accept. This is per eBay's instructions to sellers listing on the eBay.com (USA) site. Message, confirming shipment date, will be sent to email address listed with PAYPAL payment. Please ensure that it is still a valid email address and that your eBay/PAYPAL profile is up-to-date.

Again - these are not my policies, no need to argue your case to me - I thought you were wanting an answer, not an arguement. It is obvious you are violating eBay policies. The statement clearly asks a buyer to contact you for additional payment methods AND - it is clear you intend to communicate about other payment methods not in your listing to the buyer.

Thank you for visiting my store!

MY guess is the PayPal comment is not the policy violation they used to end his listings. So....

    Regarding optional insurance charge:

Optional buyer charges for shipping insurance removed: The insurance option creates the perception that buyers need to purchase shipping insurance as a protection on eBay, an experience they're not accustomed to on other ecommerce sites. In fact, sellers have always been responsible for their items until they arrive safely in their customers' hands. That's why shipping insurance will no longer be included in the purchase flow as either an option or requirement for buyers.

Of course you can choose to purchase insurance on shipments, but not ask buyers to buy insurance separately. In some categories like Antiques, Collectibles, and Jewelry, shipping insurance for sellers is essential. When appropriate, you can include the cost of insurance in your item or shipping price.

Regarding not being responsible for item delivery - you can't say that anymore either:

What do I need to do to make sure I'm in compliance with the Selling Practices policy?
To make sure you're in compliance with the new Selling Practices policy:
    • Check any terms and conditions within a listing to make sure they're consistent.
    • Change any generic templates that include multiple or inconsistent conditions for the same item.
    • Include accurate information regarding shipping costs, handling time and return policy.
    • Keep in mind that you are responsible for your item until it arrives safely in the buyer's hands. Do not imply in any way that once the item is shipped you are not responsible for timely delivery or condition on arrival.
    • Avoid disclaiming the availability of the item listed, and remove or edit listings when you sell out.
    • Review your listing descriptions and listing templates to make any necessary changes

Regarding your comments on DSRs - it's a stretch, but possible that eBay ended your listing for that wording, under this clause:

Appropriate language—Listings cannot include comments that undermine confidence in the marketplace, such as comments expressing negativity toward buyers or the selling process.

Can you provide some examples of unprofessional language and tone?
Here are a few examples unprofessional language and tone:

"Due to bad buyers on eBay, you must contact me prior to bidding or your bid will be cancelled and you will be reported to eBay!!"

"I have had so many bad transactions with zero Feedback buyers. So, if you are new, don't bid!"

"I will leave negative Feedback for all non-paying bidders."

"I am forced to use PayPal."
