ITS.. I Can answer one question for you now...RE TV ADS

Nov 3, 2009 4:42 AM
Its in the news in the article I posted below the comment.

"Let's talk about homemade gifts," he says. "No one wants them. I know it's the thought that counts, but think harder. How about a snow mobile? It doesn't have to be expensive. Go to eBay."

TRY GO TO EBAY.COM or maybe even EBAYMOTORS.com since that is where the snowmobiles are..

Link

NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Link <---shall we delete this page?

Its probably not so bad though because lots of people already left, why not finish off the rest!

Nothing against Snowmobiles of course, which are actively bid on the site (all 100 of them), but they arent even on .com they are on Motors and well some people might not even know about motors.

They will do a search, then have to click to Ebay motors cat to really find them.

Snowmobiles are fine but we dont need to knock another product category to promote on.

Just my opinion.

The good news is the cooking ones are good, might help people like Allen, Faeries. I like that idea a lot.

Might want to look at this one-

Link

I just watched a book review about marketing to Gen Y (10-30) and they mentioned how popular these popup stores were with them.

a man in his mother's living room holds a set of knitted mittens. "Let's talk about homemade gifts," he says. "No one wants them. I know it's the thought that counts, but think harder. How about a snow mobile? It doesn't have to be expensive. Go to eBay."

Oh come on! To go from handmade mittens and homemade gifts to a snowmobile and stating it doesn't have to be expensive is just plain nonsense! And how many mothers could seriously afford a snowmobile for a Christmas gift! I think the ad is in poor taste and shows the greed and stupidity of the person who came up with it and also of the people at ebay who approved and paid for it!

I formed my own EBay ad committee and im vetoing it LOL

I have backers too! LOL

You might not EVER see that baby if I have my way LOL

(of course I really dont make these decisions I just pretend to the in the Ebay board game called "Bid Me Baby One More Time")

Dorothy .. I LOVE the pop up stores and now that they announced it I can say I will be in NYC for that one and would love to have lunch with some EBayers!

Also im going to do a flip video and promote Ebay Local all by myself (if they like it or not its a free world).
Im going to buy from people and pick it up right there!

U watch me! LOL

marty,

I formed my own EBay ad committee and im vetoing it LOL

Well, I haven't seen the ad with the snowmobile, so I won't try to judge it. I do think it's easy to make too big a deal about the precise item being featured, as that isn't the point of the ad. In this case, I think the point of the ad is more about mentioning something buyers wouldn't normally associate with ebay---snowmobiles, for example----and getting them to wonder what else might be on eBay that would interest them.

The pop-up store idea is interesting.

Also im going to do a flip video and promote Ebay Local all by myself (if they like it or not its a free world).
Im going to buy from people and pick it up right there!

You are starting to think like me LOL I think I've told you several times that if you want to convince ebay that YOUR version of eBay Local is better than what they are doing in Spain and France, you should prove it to them by hiring a third party developer and creating an ebay Local for your area....I would think with eBay's API that should be possible to do.

Of course, I realize you are not talking about going that far....you are just talking about a flip video, but the principle is the same.LOL

Did you see the ad or just the article about the ad, Marty?

I found the ads to be funny. I think they will appeal to a wide range of people. I think they are also the kind of ads that generate buzz.

I didn't interpret the mitten one to mean eBay wants to get rid of handcrafted items. It's humor. It will resonate with all the people that have gotten well intentioned gifts they didn't want. The point of the snowmobile is the contrast.

Im glad you liked them Faerie. Ive seen the ads that have been released so far and while I hope they work and do think they are funny I really dont think they capture the essence of the reasons to shop here or inspire someone to come to the site enough.

What I think doesnt matter, what the buyers think will be what is important.

Regarding the mitten one. There are 100 snowmobiles on Ebay.

There are 13000 plus (probably many many more) homemade items.

the 100 snowmobiles are listed on Ebay motors and you have some serious clicking to do to get to them.

In a classroom setting 9 out of 10 students never even heard of Ebay motors.

I just think so much more can be done but lets see how this batch works.

I can tell you after listening to the guy with the kids hands in the VCR with mac n cheese I actually just clicked out of it. There is funny to get to a point then there is droning on and on and making no point.

Except the ad wasn't about buying snowmobiles. It was about finding what you really want - even something as unusual as a snowmobile.

WOW! Are you ever ignorant of the crafting industry!!

Our customers won't find this the least bit funny and neither do I..... Do you HAVE A CLUE how large this industry is??? Do you have ANY idea how big this is on eBay? DO YOU KNOW that eBay is the largest craft store in the world?

By the way Big Time - I don't mind in the least that my products may SMELL LIKE CHURCH!

Stick the what the %&LL you know.....

All my love,
Curly Tail

Curly, calm down. I've been in handiwork forever and I know -and laugh at-the jokes about ANOTHER pair of mittens or scarf from Grandma, particularly from men.

I'm curious as to what channel you guys have seen the snowmobile ad on.
I saw it on Comedy Central, which makes sense since Jim Gaffigan is a comedian. It aired during the Daily Show, which means lots of young/smart people saw the commercial and will hopefully go to Ebay to find cool, non-mitteny gifts for their friends and family. That's a marketing win/win in my book.
Perhaps they have entirely different commercials for HGTV, Food Network, etc.
I thought the snowmobile ad was hilarious. I'm a very uncrafty woman, and I have a drawer full of knitted and embroidered crap that people have given me that I feel too guilty to get rid of. I would LOVE it if these people got me something fun from Ebay instead! (Guess I'm a knucklewalker too!)
Now if only he had managed to work Hot Pockets into the spot!
