Faerie,

Actually I agree that this sort of pairing is not the end of the world... but I do think some WILL think it is so. Why push buttons when it is not necessary?

Posted on a related thread by me, but relevant here, so a partial re-post:
The goofy Christian/Playboy mash-up is not why I am upset. The way these are shown, it makes it appear that these are additional items from the same seller - and THAT is why content does matter.

And further, I think it just points out eBay's inability to program a proper search module!

This (whole episode, not just the Playboy issue) seems to me to show that they are 1) Inept and 2) Desperate.

Folks... the point here is that next to the peanut butter is where you want to put the jelly... not the bleach. Mustard belongs in the condiment aisle near the ketchup... not over in the dog food.

Cross merchandising is an effective way to grow sales... highly effective. When done right. You'd be surprised at the amount of toys you can sell on a clip strip next to kids cereal in a store! It's unbelievable! In a BM store you can take an item that you're hung with and can't sell and find a good spot to cross-merchandise it and blow it out. (usually by the checkout counter, or on the register itself is a great place to sell crap you can't sell anywhere else) BUT... and there is a HUGE but... there is a rhymn and reason behind every cross merchandising effort... there is a skill involved!

Cross merchandising is all about honing in on a persons interest and then showing them specific items that interests them.

Ebay is doing the opposite. They tried to institute a one size fits all half-azzed program and failed to think it thru.

Although not as shocking as the Playboy examples I find the "you searched for so you might be interested in " and the "you bought, find more of " stuff to be totally out of whack.

I helped a friend search for a used sofa. The "you searched for Sofa, find more" showed a craps table!

When I bought coffee filters it showed me dresses!

And forget about my purchase of the Saturday the 14th Video., its been cranking up nonsensical stuff for weeks now!

There has to be a better way of doing that.

It has been doing a good job of popping up collectibles based on watched items though.

Cross-promoting "adult" items for those surfing in the "adult" section would make sense. Promoting them elsewhere should be taboo. Ebay=viewer discretion is now advised.

But that's not really the issue. The issue is that we pay for the listing page, and people are generally attention deficit, easily distracted. Ebay is encouraging this disorder. Click on an item and forget what you were originally looking at. Means it wasn't that important anyway? I don't think that's the issue either...the issue is to make a sale, so hold the customer's attention, not constantly beg them to leave the listing page, or even ebay as a site.
The most ironic thing of all--and the proof to me of how unfair ebay has become in its business practices--is that a listing you pay for and create and then mention your other items in your description is against policy and may be removed should they find it or someone report it.

sounds like ebay is grabing the cookie files from your browser to me.
they don't do random, especialy before the holidays.

nope... they're parsing words from a file in your computer likely.
got kids, teenagers....hmmmm.

Not sure about that mookiewill...I'm using a new laptop, I live alone and I have never searched for Playboy, or been on a site where they sell it except for ebay...today when I looked at a christian listing with the Playboys at the bottom. Never clicked on a listing of one, or watched one. And I've never been to a site with adult content. The only place this computer has gone is to my bank, and ebay, and the Sony and Microsoft sites. Oh, and yahoo groups having to do only with dollhouse stuff, and the backyard chicken site.

I still think they are using the same screwed up algorithm or program that they used for the "related items" search in eBay Express (RIP). There were entire threads on boards at the time devoted to the ridiculous and often humorous "related" items that were suggested.

I am going to try it though - checking a listing now, then clearing my cookies and coming back to same listing to see if I get the same "most watched" items.

OK... I checked a particular listing under "cat books". The "most watched" were all but 1, Dr.Seuss books. ( Not exactly cat care, but I get it, Cat in the Hat).
I logged out. Cleared my browser cache, did a search of all my hard drive files for the word Seuss (just in case I had an old Seuss book listing still on here somewhere which I didn't). I logged back in. Went to same listing. Got the exact same "watched items". So to me, does not appear to have anything to do with cookies or files on your computer.

What I LOVE is the little sentence ebay puts at the bottom of our listings:

Seller assumes all responsibility for this listing.

eBay wants us to be responsible for what THEY put at the bottom of our listings????

Yes, we can opt out but once enought sellers get smart and opt out, ebay WILL take the opt out away.

that is the thing i have the biggest issue with. that sentence is one centimeter under the most watched box...basically signing my name to it....i began putting this banner on the bottom of my listings today, directly above that m.w. box..." any listing or offer that appears below this banner is inserted by ebay and is not offered or endorsed by an enchanted vision"...now, i only have 187 more listings to go....ug

I think all this is is ebay pulse information brought to all listings. It has nothing to do with keywords, it has to do with catagories an item is listed in. In the case of the playboy magazine it was listed in: MAGAZINES/BACK ISSUES... The system takes the top five most watched listings in that catagory and then shows them at the bottom of ALL ITEM PAGES within that listing.

So regardless of what you've looked at, everyone sees the exact same top five most watched items within the catagory they are searching.

This is just wrong on soooo many levels.... let us count the ways:

1. TIMING... shouldn't have been implemented in the all important 4th quarter.

2. HONESTY... Ebay said they would give us 60 days notice before making such changes.

3. HONESTY... ebay said that the "second and last" changes were Oct. 1st.

4. INVASION... It's our item pages, designed to give a description of the item we're selling, information relative to the item/seller.

5. MISREPRESENTATION: Disclaimer saying seller is responsible for the ad and we're not.

6. OPT OUT MISREPRENTATION... told we could opt out yet the module appears anyway

Need I go on?

you forgot the fact that we can not see the box on our own pages...we have to sign out and look to see them...that alone tells us how under handed this is....
