Beginning January 1, 2007 all books published will contain a 13 digit ISBN vs the standard 10 digit ISBN. More so, all books with an existing 10 digit ISBN will also be assigned a new 13 digit ISBN (also known as EAN).
This will impact all File Exchange users even it you do not list in the books category (please read section “How will this impact my downloadable files?”) How will this impact listing items using ISBN values? To accommodate, eBay and Half.com will support dual ISBN search. This means you will be able to list using either value and will not need to make any changes to File Exchange when adding items:
ProductIDType=ISBN and ProductIDValue= ISBN-10 or ISBN-13 value (which ever you want).
Both values will be displayed on the site in the catalog details section of your listing(s).
How will this impact my downloadable files? We will be adding a new field to all downloadable File Exchange files to accommodate the new ISO standards for ISBN-13.
Below is a complete list of files that will be impacted.
eBay Files Impacted: • Load Results File
• Active Listings
• Awaiting Payment
• Paid and Shipped
• Paid and Awaiting to Ship
• Archived
• Sold
• Sold and Archived
Half.com Files Impacted: • Load Results File
• Half.com Orders
• Half.com Inventory Snapshots
• Half.com Refunded Orders
• Half.com Shipped Orders
• Half.com Completed Payment Files
• Half.com Pending Payment Files
What will change? The file format of all the mentioned files will be modified to support dual ISBN values. This impacts all users regardless of the category you listing in as the file format will be altered due to the new field.
New Field Header Name: “ProductIDValue-2”
Where will this new field be placed? Currently all downloadable files contain ProductIDType and ProductIDValue together in a file. The new field will be placed after ProductIDValue and before the subsequent field.

What values will be present in ProductIDValue and ProductIDValue-2? ProductIDValue will always contain the dominate ISBN value, which in most cases will be ISBN-13. ProductIDValue-2 will contain the secondary ISBN value.
There are 3 situations which will impact the value in these two fields:
1. ISBN-10 is the only value available. ISBN-10 will be in ProductIDValue field as ISBN-10 is the dominate, or only, value available.
2. Both ISBN-13 and ISBN-10 are available. ProductIDValue will contain ISBN-13, the dominate value, and ISBN-10 will be available in ProductIDValue-2
3. ISBN-13 is the only value available (all books published after 01/01/2007) ISBN-13 will be in ProductIDValue field as ISBN-13 is the dominate, or only, value.
Below is an example:
How long will eBay and Half.com support ISBN-10? We do not have any plans to remove ISBN-10 at this time.
When will this change take effect? We are planning to release this the 1st week of March. Please stay turned for an exact date over the next few weeks.
Thank You,
Jennifer
