CPAP MASKS NOW PROHIBITED FROM BEING OLD ON EBAY

In the past year I have sold 3 used CPAP masks on eBay without any problems. I usually get mine replaced every 6 months so I always find a buyer for my used ones. They don't require a prescription and they save a lot of money for those who need a mask in good condition yet want to save money by buying a used one. Well, yesterday I listed one and today eBay has canceled my listing claiming that CPAP masks require prescriptions and they aren't allowed on eBay any longer. I am just wondering as to where eBay gets this clueless boobs who make up these stupid rules. They are about as misinformed as a someone who has been on a 3 day drinking binge. If these idiots took the time to educate themselves, they would know that you don't need a prescription for a CPAP mask. It's getting very difficult to sell merchandise on eBay due to the ignorant manner in which these people make up the rules. I just about have had enough with eBay and after 9 years, I am considering abandoning it and start using Craigs List to sell my unwanted stuff. I am sick of this crap! Rob

Honest, I am not being rude ... I'm not ... but I'm just saying ... I just googled cpap mask ... I wanted to be sure it was what I thought it was (which it was) and I could not even imagine purchasing a used one. I purchase lots of used things but ewww I couldn't even imagine purchasing a used one.

It has been against policy to sell CPAP masks here for about three years. Yet, the last time I checked, they allowed nebulizer compressors, which do require a prescription. And there are tons of cheap, non-FDA approved pulse oximiters on the site. These things are so dangerous as they read everyone at 98% oxygen level. You can be at 85% and they will read 98%. It irks the heck out of me. See my page for frequently used eBay discussion board acronyms.

I'd not ever want to buy a used cpap mask. YUCK. Something that someone else has put over their face, coughed/sneezed into, all night, for months? A breeding ground for bacteria. I work in a nursing home and I cannot IMAGINE buying one used. The people you call "clueless boobs" and "idiots" are trying to protect others. You cannot personally guarantee that the used mask you are selling is in proper working order.

Way to draw the line eBay!

Did you ever ask Ebay to show you the law that legally prohibits the sale of CPAP mask? I just got my ad yanked too, and I was selling a brand new mask in an un-opened factory sealed bag! I will contact them and advise them to check with their legal staff on this. I work in health care and I know that it is not illegal to sell or buy CPAP masks without a prescription. Fred

A CPAP mask is basically a plastic frame which holds replaceable silicone cushions. It sits on your face. Much like, and nearly identical to say, a scuba mask.
When I checked a moment ago, there were 172 used scuba masks for sale on ebay. The materials used to make a CPAP mask are chosen to prevent bacteria build up for the original user as much as anyone. All the parts are completely washable, the same way your glasses, coffee cups and dishes are. Most people dont have a problem eating from dishes that have been previously used by others. According to the high number of used scuba masks for sale, the people who buy those dont either. Why/how is a CPAP mask any different? It just sits on your face. That is it. And the part that comes in contact with the skin are all user replaceable, and for cheap.
These comments show no common sense at all.

I too, am having problems selling new, unopened, factory sealed items. Yet ebay seems to have no problem with OTHER people selling the exact same items. Seems a shame to me that it all depends on a whim, who get to sell, and who gets pulled. I have checked numerous times, and from what I can tell, there are LOTS of prescription items on ebay. What a crock...

In many countries, PAP machines are only available by prescription. A sleep study at an accredited sleep lab is usually necessary before treatment can start. This is because the pressure settings on the PAP machine must be tailored to a patient's treatment needs. A sleep medicine doctor, who may also be trained in respiratory medicine, psychiatry, neurology, paediatrics, family practice or otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat), will interpret the results from the initial sleep study and recommend a pressure test. This may be done in one night (a split study with the diagnostic testing done in the first part of the night, and CPAP testing done in the later part of the night) or with a follow up second sleep study during which the CPAP titration may be done over the entire night. With CPAP titration (split night or entire night), the patient wears the CPAP mask and pressure is adjusted up and down from the prescribed setting to find the optimal setting.United States, PAP machines are often available at large discounts online, but a patient purchasing a PAP personally must handle the responsibility of securing reimbursement from his or her insurance or Medicare. Many of the internet providers that deal with insurance such as Medicare will provide upgraded equipment to a patient even if he or she only qualifies for a basic PAP. In some locations a government programme, separate from Medicare, can be used to claim a reimbursement for all or part of the cost of the PAP device. In the United Kingdom, PAP machines are available on National Health Service prescription after a diagnosis of sleep apnea or privately from the internet provided a prescription is supplied. In Australia, PAP machines can be bought from the Internet or physical stores. There is no requirement for a doctor's prescription, however many suppliers will require a referral. Low-income earners who hold a Commonwealth Health Care Card should enquire with their state's health department about programmes that provide free or low-cost PAP machines. Those who have private health insurance may be eligible for a partial rebate on the cost of a CPAP machine and the mask. Superannuation may be released for the purchase of essential medical equipment such as PAP machines, on the provision of letters from two doctors, one of whom must be a specialist, and an application to the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA). In Canada, CPAP units are widely available in all provinces. Funding for the therapy varies from province to province. In the province of Ontario, the Ministry of Health's Assistive Devices Program will fund a portion of the cost of a CPAP unit based on a sleep study in an approved sleep lab showing Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome and the signature of an approved physician on the application form. This funding is available to all residents of Ontario with a valid health card once every 5 years.[14] [edit] References

I agree with you. How can you compare a scuba mask with a cpap mask something that your breathing & circulating in your lungs not just at night time. Patents can go from a respirator to a tracheotomy to cpap-ing 24hrs a day. Sickly ... really. people will sell anything. New in package ... but some countries do require prescriptions

I agree with those that state that is unsanitary to buy a used mask, but did you realized that the mask you used in your study was also a used mask? So what is the difference? As one of the members replied, these are made out of a material that is bacteria resistance and that can be sterilized fairly quickly and fast. Personally I would not buy a used one, but if I had to, the parts that actually come in contact with your face are easily replaceable.
I believe Ebay pulled the plug on these by the pressure of the CPAP Mask manufacturers, such as MesRed and Respironics. The loop hole to buy these w/o prescription is if you buy them "separate", meaning buy the frame first and then the headgear. Remember, it is all about $$ and who can push you the most.

They should be prohibited. You need a federal license to sell them, so they absolutely should be prohibited from trading via Ebay. Peter Egan of Egan Healthcare

Yes, other people DO seem to sell masks on ebay without getting their ads yanked. It is my opinion that those very people flag other's ads to ebay as being prohibited, so that their competion simply disappears. However, as one ebayer pointed out, if you sell the parts seperately, that is acceptable (unless policy has changed). My wife worked in a sleep clinic located within a nearby hospital, and they cleaned their masks with soap and water- nothing special. So yes, anyone who has had a study done, has worn a used mask.

I think it has to do with the actual companies that produce the masks, lately ResMed has been having a hard on for my listings. I listed separate components from a brand new Mirage Quattro mask and ResMed actually forced ebay to pull my listings for various reasons. Last time I checked, I could do whatever the hell I wanted with a product I paid for. I think they don't like their customers cutting into their own business. I'm moving to Craigs list. Ebay sold out its own customers.

nebulizer compressors do NOT require a prescription. You might get a prescription for one, but you can pay cash for one without a prescription. The medication is what requires a prescription. The compressor is nothing more than an air pump

Ok we all know that you can sell CPAP parts on eBay, because these do not require a prescription and are therefore not regulated by the FDA...I agree I would never buy/sell used CPAP parts. Now eBay will pull your listing stating that you violated a NEW rule, one of which is not stated under their own rules and regulations, that item has to be in original factory packaging..so then when you adjust all of your listings to clearly state and show with photographs that these are factory sealed. Ok but if you have any RESMED products, Resmed then lies to eBay stating that your items are not in original factory packaging when the photos clearly shows "RESMED" on the packaging and it is obvious that it is factory sealed item, just as I get them from RESMED. So now eBay pulls the listing and says because RESMED contacted them and told them that it was not original packaging. So now RESMED can lie and commit fraud because they don't want anyone selling their products on Ebay. Sounds like RESMED will soon be hearing from an attorney or two or three if this behavior continues to impede my business.
