Hi Cyndia...generally when a person talks about a yard of fabric, they mean the length...the width will be from selvage to selvage and the other way is length.   A yard is 36 inches or 3 feet.  Fabric measurements are called yards and fractions of a yard....1/8th, 1/4, 1/2 etc.  never: 1 yard and 1 foot... .... it would be 1 1/2 yards.

A quarter of a yard is generally 36 divided by 4 = 9 inches...and about 44" wide.

A fat quarter is when a yard is divided ---up and down and also cross-ways  into 4 pieces.  This will give a piece of fabric about 22 and 18 inches.  This will allow larger cuts to be make...

Fabric is generally about 44" wide..some speciallity fabrics may be smaller = huck towels, some Asian/Indian fabrics for instance.  Decorator fabric is usually about 56" wide.. and then there is some fabric that is about 108" wide that is made for quilt backings....

Hope I did not confuse you...but remember that most of this is "generally"  the exceptions will drive you crazy.  best wishes.  Mildred
