I recently came into a half a box full of these fasteners. I do not know what type of fasteners they are or what they are used for. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I believe, but am not certain, that you may have a box of older, what is loosely referred to as 1/4 turn OR cam lock fasteners.  If you google those two terms you will find what appears to be more modern versions of what you have.  I have seen and used similar fasteners like you have on surplus military equipment, they were quarter turn cam locks used on access panels on equipment that was used in the Air Force.  But none of them had the cam come out the latch like yours does; they remained in the access panel. They did not look like yours, but worked the same way, spring loaded and 1/4 turn open the door. Yours kind of throws me.  Why does it come apart?  Almost like a key.  They usually do not do that cause the key will get lost...  so?  Not much help.  Sorry.  :)

Thanks. This gives me a little direction in my search. I agree, they do look like earier versions of what you mentioned. I'll keep at it.

It's a wing head camlock.

Yours comes apart because it needs a retaining ring. Even tho it doesn't show it being installed on a wing head camlock retaining rings for the most part are installed the same way on all camlocks.

There is a good illustration of how to install a retaining ring on this site linked below if you scroll down and click the link that says

How to install retaining washers 4002-SW-SS , 2600-SW , 5S3-2 and 991W02-1BP?

I used to do body work on aircraft and I have installed more than my fair share of these things.

Actually this link better shows the wing head camlock than the first link I left. You have to scroll down to see it on the first link I left.
