***Preview of Item Specifics Feature to Debut in Sewing Machines***-UPDATED

May 12, 2005 5:53 PM
In mid-late June, we plan to introduce Item Specifics in the Sewing Machines category.

What are Item Specifics?

Item Specifics is an eBay feature that allows sellers to provide additional item details, using consistent terminology, during the selling process that is presented in a clean layout in the top half of the View Item page. Buyers can search using these item details thus finding these items more quickly and easily using the product finder. We believe the feature provides significant value to both buyers and sellers. For more information about Item Specifics, please refer to our FAQ:
Item Specifics FAQ (Link)
and other FAQs at the bottom of this post.

Which Item Specifics will be implemented in Sewing Machines?

We plan to implement Item Specifics in Sewing Machines. Below, you will see a list of the proposed item specifics and examples:

  • Function (Serger, Sewing, Sewing & Embroidery, Other)

  • Type (Compact/Mini, Computerized, Hand-held, Mechanical, Toy, Other)

  • Brand (Pfaff, Janome/ New Home, Simplicity, etc…)

  • Model (Type in text box)

  • Condition (New, Used, Refurbished)

  • Following are a few questions that we have and would appreciate your feedback:

    1. Are we missing any key product types in our list?
        List of proposed product types:
      • Toy

      • Compact, Mini

      • Computerized

      • Hand-held

      • Mechanical

      • Other

Do you think of the Barbie-type machines as Toy Machines or Children’s Machines?

We are calling the basic household, non-computerized model, “mechanical,” does that make sense to you?

    2. Please email feedback to: crafts@ebay.com with the subject line: Item Specifics or post directly to this thread. I really appreciate your feedback and will weigh it to make sure that the right decisions for the marketplace are made!

Why do we believe Item Specifics will work well in Sewing Machines, Sergers?

We believe that the Sewing Machines category is conducive to Item Specifics because sewing Machines have common product details that users deem valuable to their selling and buying experience. Our intent is to improve this experience by highlighting these common product details through Item Specifics. To sellers, this means making it easier for them to present a clean, well-organized description that clearly articulates the Item Specifics. For example, a seller using additional functions, can call out if the machine does more than sewing, if additionally it is a serger, performs embroidery or has quilting functionality. To buyers, this means making it easier for them to search for items with particular Item Specifics. For example, a buyer using the Product Finder can choose to select a New Household Serger or a Refurbished Bernina Arista 185. For both sellers and buyers, Item Specifics is an optional and supplementary way to sell and buy through the existing process.

      Must I use Item Specifics?

No. Sellers can choose to include Item Specifics in their listing or not, and buyers can choose whether or not to search for these details. We believe that it will enhance the buyer experience greatly as it has in other areas of the marketplace.

People often want to know when a machine was made or bought, ie, how old. Upper end machines often get asked how much sewing time, appx. Some machines actually record the exact amount of on time, sewing time, and embroidery time.

More thoughts,

"Recently serviced?" Last 30 days, 1 to 3 months, 3 to 6 months, 6 months to a year, not recently serviced.

"Warranty?" yes, no, as is (see listing for details if yes.)

And yes, stick Barbie in Childrens.

Could there possibly be some kind of cross-over between this sewing machine section and sewing machines under business and industrial? An industrial category under crafts/sewing/machines? A majority of what I sell are semi industial machines. I have found that most people will find me in either B and I, or an entirely different audience finds me in crafts, but only if I double list my machines. Many people dont even know that machines under B and I exists. To me, it seems a little unfair to have to list double to catch a full audience. But if I have to live with that, I will ;) I dont know if ebay has ever done this, but, if there was a listing under crafts/sewing/machines for industrial machines, couldnt ebay just have a redundant listing? IE, list in machines under B and I, and your listing is also listed under crafts/sewing/machines/industrial, 2 different categories, 2 different ways to get there, but both contain all the same listings. Does that make sense?

In response to your new sewing machine specifics: under the types of sewing machines, you may wish to add basic sewing machine (meaning it only does basic stitches and semi-automatic buttonholes) and also whether it is portable or in a cabinet.

I think that there should be an option under the item specifics that would allow sellers to specify whether the machine is a home or industrial machine, and if so if it has a motor, or table included. This will allow the business people to cross promote to people who are looking for these types of industrial machines.

I think that industrial should be a category of sewing machines.

I agree definitely that it is important that industrial machines should be a seperate catagory from home machines.

Recently there has been a rash of listings titled "Industrial Strength Sewing Machine" or something similar, with references to "leather" and Canvas". The machines being listed are too often NOT industrial, nor capable of more than the lightest leather sewing. I see them selling for far more than the actual value - they are usually cheap imports from the fifties and sixties, and I feel a lot of people are getting a raw deal here. The buyers are very often new to ebay - it's going to eventually give the whole comunity a black eye!

Perhaps the new industrial listings could be monitored somehow, so the honest seller will not suffer?

Yes, definitely a separate category for industrial vs. home use. And I think that there should also be the distinction between machines that are in a cabinet vs. in a "box" (as I sometimes call that thing). Some of the machines in cabinets are nearly furniture instead of just a machine! Also...has anyone thought about a special category for the old treadle type?
And just curious here...does anyone else find it cute that we are following a "thread" about sewing machines? :-p

I don't think "mechanical" is a good way to describe a basic home machine. When I saw "mechanical", I assumed it meant "non-electric" - my mom has such a machine (it has a hand crank), and they are somewhat common (second-hand) in Europe, and the Amish use them also. Why not call them "basic home machine"? (It isn't going to be easy - some of the "basic" machines do have some limited embroidery functions.) Or Why not "standard"? It fits well with toy/embroidery/etc., and it's much clearer than "mechanical". After all, they're all mechanical!!!

Mechanical would denote a treadle machine. How about semi-automatic?

The word mechanical does not describe the non-electronic or non-computer machine. I just call it a standard home type machine, no bells and whistles. These machines usually have straight and zig-zag options and most often have a buttonhole feature.

I have not seen a 'Barbie' machine. Is it really a working machine with the logo and pink paint? or is it a toy? I guess I have to look that one up.

Definately include industrial machines in your categories, and you will find how many different industrial machines there are such as straight stitch, single or double needle, overlock--home users call this serger), flatlock, blindstitch hemmer, etc. And there are many brands such as Juki, Brother, Consew and sew on ;) I would imagine that in the both industrial and home sewing machine categories you will definately need to include a "Notions Category" specific to machines such as bobbins, sewing feet, machine needles, and other machine accessories.

On the note of "mechanical" versus "electronic," I find as a dealer that for the majority of the average consumers, they have no idea what the difference is. I see nothing but confusion, even for some sellers that would list because there are machines out there that are mechanical, both new and used, that have the word "electronic" right on the front of the machine, which is misleading and many people assume they must have an "electronic" machine, when all it really means is that the machine has an electronic foot control, or it has a digital display.

I see nothing but confusion for both consumers, and the average seller regarding the differences between "mechanical" and "electronic" or "computerized."
