Seller in Singapore

Nov 6, 2009 4:34 AM
I bid on a ring listed by a seller I thought was in the UK. The ad said free shipping. I won the auction and received an invoice from Singapore requiring that I pay insurance of $4.99. First of all, if I had known it was Singapore, I never would have bid. Secondly, can any seller require you to insure an item when they did not disclose this at all in the auction???

If the Seller is in a different Country to the one they stated on their Auction Page, I wouldn't think that they would be able to insist that you to buy their item. Personally if it was me this happened to, I wouldn't want to deal with someone so sneaky. What would they have to gain by doing this unless they were up to no good?.

the answer is no! the insurance is just a hidden charge. I won't deal with that kinda seller either.

Just up to a bit of extra money, I'd say, rather than no good, but this is a voilation of ebay policy that outlaws sellers asking for insurance payments, and may be reported as such even after the sale has concluded.

OP, you could mention this to your seller. The implicit threat will be that if they don't drop this, they will be reported.

There is nothing inherently sinister about Singapore, and US buyers will not have any customs problems unless the ring was very expensive indeed, in which case the same would have applied from Britain.

If you paid for the item with paypal and it does not arrive, you can reclaim the payment, so just tell the seller not to bother with insurance. That will in no way alter your right to claim for non-delivery.
Mainly, it's a bluff.

If you're talking about the auction for the "Natural 1.34ct sapphire and diamond ring" listed in Australian dollars, the item location is stated as being in Singapore.

However, something to bear in mind is that the seller is registered in China. With a winning bid of about $11, you may well have overpaid for the ring.

Hmm well..which ever way you dress it up af. In my book he's up to no good. If this is an Ebay violation it tells me as a Buyer not to bother buying from him. If those are the kind of things this Seller gets up to you never know what he is going to do to the Buyer. Not someone I could trust that's for sure.

Not sure what to do now. I emailed the seller and told him I would not pay the insurance as it was not posted in the auction. He re-invoiced me for the price of the ring alone.

I guess I will pay and hope I get the item . . .

I am sure you will get an item. It will not have natural sapphires or any gold content, even the listing says the diamonds are rhinestones (glass, essentially).

For the money it is probably fair enough price for a flash piece of costume jewellery, but my estimate of the ring is that it would would weigh 2.5 to 3 grams without the stones. That is about $50 worth of gold. Why would anyone, especially someone running a business, sell $50 worth of gold for $11.

This business model is not sustainable, yet the seller seems to have many similar bargains.

Beats me how that can do it for the price, I suppose because they only get a bowl of rice a day, and because it is so far away, gold and jewels must be cheaper there.

It's worth paying $11 just to find out what you get.

Most likely all the OP will get is a green finger. I hope she will come back and let us know what happened in the end.
I would really like this thread to have a happy ending but I won't hold my breath. This may not be ebay policy but if this was happening to me I wouldn't go ahead with the transaction and I'd ignore any emails he sent but then, I'm just naughty!]:)
