I sell internationally all the time.

Bottom line: every online 'customer' we have had from Indonesia and Nigeria has been a scam. Haven't had one problem anywhere else in the world. But, ALL users from these areas, that have contacted us (at least a few thousand), have all been money order/credit card scams. Please be advised. Also, now some folks from Indonesia are moving around to Singapore/Malaysia to try scamming from that area, perhaps to obfuscate their identity. I know this because I have tracked the same compromised SMTP boxes. Also, it is the same "send before you receive the money" or "use my friend's credit card" scams. I feel sorry for those that fall victim. Be smart when you trade internationally. Require insurance for "larger" priced items.

I can't understand why I'm not automatically a verified Paypal member when I'm a verified eBay member already.

Actually it doesn't matter at all. Even if paypal would confirm and verify international addresses sellers could never comply with their seller protection requirement of an online trackable shipment method for international deals.

Online trackable shipping to overseas is too expensive for average ebay items so even if paypal would confirm, verify etc. international addresses there won't be any seller protection at all.

Laurie, I like that idea with the global shipping icon. Only problem is what if a seller choses only Canada or only Europe ... would this count as global too?

Another option could be to give the US only sellers a little US flag icon and then international buyers would know upfront which items to skip.

I would love to see an option to skip the US only auctions right from the beginning. It would benefit both, buyers and sellers.

I hadn't thought about that, Peter. Ummm, maybe half a globe for them? :)

Laurie, yes this would be a good idea. Highlighting positive attributes of an auction is better than highlighting restrictions.

It would be great if there was a global icon that international buyers can see at once which auctions offer worldwide or partly international shipping options when browsing the categories.
If they always have to click on auctions with shipping restrictions, blocks etc. browsing is frustrating and scares buyers away.

Good ideas. Another change that would be nice for sellers who clearly state in their listing that they don't accept Paypal from certain countries would be for ebay to get rid of the Paypal logos if the seller sends an invoice from ebay. It's confusing for the buyer and the seller can't turn them off if they decide to use ebay's send an invoice feature.

Pinkslap has an excellent point, too. Receiving an invoice through PayPal and then being told you can't pay through Paypal would make me irritated, I'm sure.

Fonzie mentioned that many US sellers won't sell internationally, through fear of the unknown and lack of seller "protection". I'm sure there are sellers in other countries who also refuse to sell anywhere but in their own country, but there does seem to be a large percentage of us here in the US who feel that way.

EBay does advertise itself as an international venue. Sellers who don't wish to sell internationally certainly can't be forced to do so, of course. And only a small percentage of sellers and buyers do visit these boards to learn. EBay does notify sellers when there's a promotion of any sort in place. How about a notification sent to all sellers of a free listing day for international sales only? :)

In that notice, of course, sellers would have to be told that they would need to change their setting from "sell US only" to "sell internationally". Many sellers aren't aware of that. I've spoken with a couple of local eBay sellers who were puzzled as to why they never received any international bids. When I asked if they had changed that setting to "international" since this is a default setting, they weren't aware that this needed to be done.

The International options for fixed or calculated were a huge step in the right direction! :)

1. Please add Global Priority Flat Rate to the calculator.

2. Or allow us to choose a combination of fixed and calculated. Rather than the current all or nothing for both domestic and International.

3. Please allow us to choose separate payment options and instructions for International buyers.

4. And that icon is a good idea, should make that one a priority!

Remove the 1% paypal surcharge and offer some protection so that we can accept PayPal for international transactions.

I do accept PayPal for International transactions, but I can understand why someone selling more expensive items would not want to.

But speaking of PayPal, give International buyers more than 30 days to file a chargeback.

Buyers will often want Surface mail, even with being told it could take up to 3 to 4 months to some locations. Then the seller is at a chargeback risk at the 30 day mark, because the buyer hasn't received their items yet. Not fair to the seller, but I can understand why the buyer doesn't want to lose their chargeback rights either, to a degree.

Right now, the only options are: hope and pray you're dealing with a reasonable buyer (which is the route I currently take); refuse to ship Surface under any circumstances (and get buyers who want to change your TOS anyway, BTDT); refuse to accept PayPal if the buyer insists on Surface; or take designermarkdown's route and refuse to accept PayPal from International customers altogether.

Everyone stands to benefit if more sellers will accept PayPal from International buyers.

Good thread :)

OK even though i'm usually NOT in favor for any more icons I find the idea of a little globe or something for international sellers VERY helpful. As a seller AND a buyer.

And I second the complaint about the search box - that was yet another SO NOT USEFUL "improvement" . Heck, at first I thought someone stole my search box until I found it hiding in a corner, small and insignificant.

I don't know if my latest decline in international bids has to do with some other eBay search "improvements" but I noticed my international sales have gone from 30-40% per week to barely 15%
I might add that during this time of the year I usually experience MORE international business than let's say June to August.
Might be coincidence but then again it might not.

I also like the idea of being able to choose different payment methods for international buyers and I think I have brought this up on some other threads in the past. eBay will for example automatically list "personal check" as an accepted payment method for international buyers. :(

From reading the various forums it looks like there are a lot of international trading veterans. ebaY is not my business. I sell things we no longer need/want. It's not my business.

I'd suggest that you'd improve your uptake of US sellers selling interationally if you made it SIMPLE for the occasional seller to figure out the logistics of selling internationally. As an example.... I can sell, invoice, payment, ship and track within the US without ever having to leave my house. USPS & UPS will deliver supplies and pickup packages. I've never sold internationally but things like separate customs forms and lack of clarity on shipping methods have me very tentatively considering shipping to Canada... and even then only at the request of specific buyers.

Take the unknowns out of the process and provide the same level of integrated functions and support and you'll have everyone going international to get a wider audience for their auction.

Re: suggestions to eBay on improving int'l trading

Hello Tim ;)

The greatest issue that affects US and Canada trading through ebay is the sellers being told that they are not protected due to the sellers protection program. Most sellers have chosen to not trade Internationally because of this issue. It really sends a negative to foreign buyers when they are told that they can not pay by a payment that ebay itself promotes.

Until paypal figures out that sellers are not accepting Paypal payments from foreigners I am afraid that eBay is heading for more of a regional market place rather than the International community that it chooses to be.

I hear the arguments on these boards dealing with issues of fraud and other issues however by percentage of transactions globally most of the ebay users are worried about a low percentage of online payment fraud. I use a credit card in my purchases that way I am protected as a buyer however I have only had one bad occasion when an unscrupulous seller was selling QUESTIONABLE merchandise and I thought that it was best to do a chargeback. This seller is no longer a registered user of ebay for his tactics

However out of so many fine sellers on ebay how much is the actual percentage of Chargebacks and Fraudulent activity?

And how many these transactions involve Canadian Buyers?

For something that eBay promotes to use (PAYPAL) a lot of sellers are not using it to offer sales to foreign customers. I find since eBay has taken over Paypal sellers have been listing less items that are available to foreign customers and if that trend continues you will find that a lot of ebay will become a regional market place.

Another recent development has occurred on Wednesday October 6th 2004, it was announced on several radio stations that the Canadian Customs workers have announced a work to rule campaign to get their contract concerns looked after until further notice therefore packages arriving from foreign countries may be delayed.

I think e-Bay needs to add International postage printing capabilities to the shipping features of Pay Pal / My e-Bay. I just had to sign up with Endicia today to print postage because I didn't make it to the post office before they closed & wanted to maintain my "I ship within 48 hours of payment" guarantee.

Along with that there should be a small tutorial on what you need to do once you print the postage. Is there forms to print out? What do they look like? Can they be printed on-line or do they have to be picked up at the local post office. Can the package be given to your local carrier or dropped in a roadside mail collection box or do they have to be handed to a postal representative even though you have already paid for the postage?

There are many questions that need answering from a person who will be making the decision to sell Internationally.

BTW, I have sold Internationally since day one last year & have done so to quite a few countries. However, printing International postage on-line is new to me. =)
