What would you do? Need Advice asap

Nov 3, 2009 8:01 PM
Hello Everybody,
I need your advice on a transaction. I ship Internationally, and have made some great sales because of it, to Tokoyo, Singapore, ect. (I Do Not Ship to Germany) I always say in my listings and said it in this one, "International buyers, please ask for a shipping quote, prior to placing a bid~ Thank-You" I also say "Free shipping within the U.S." in my listing. Well I sold 2 pairs of Coach gloves for $89.99 each and went to ship it and realized it was going to Japan. and they paid No shipping. They paid on Fri. Oct 30th, but assumed free shipping, I guess. I only ship Express shipping out of the country, becuz that is the only way, I can ship insured and tracked and guaranteed delivery. So I wrote the buyer and said this. I explained that Express shipping is $31.50, but I would pay $12.95 for them. (I would pay $4.80 each if sold individually in within the U.S.) I never heard from them, then yesterday I sent them a money request for $18.55 (Me paying $12.95 of the $31.50) and explained all this again. I'm sure they haven't been on their computer, or would answer. I sent messages via Ebay and directly to their Email account. My problem is I feel bad because they are probably thinking I shipped them and they have very good feedback, and all I'm waiting for is an answer from them. I can't afford to ship $180.00 item, uninsured and maybe it doesn't get their. Plus I asked for their address to confirm it in English, paypal gave it to me in Japanese (not coverted to English) I also said if they didn't want to pay $18.55 I would refund. I don't want to get rated as a slow shipper, ect. all the stuff Ebay scares you about. I have a very good reputation and don't want it marked because, I have not shipped, because I'm waiting for an answer. What would you do??
Thanks for any advice, Cheri

For future reference, I strongly urge you to start posting your international shipping rates in your auctions. Some sellers complain that eBay's shipping calculator is inaccurate, but that's usually because people are providing the calculator with incorrect information.

My wife and I didn't provide shipping rates when we first started selling on eBay back in the day, and I can tell you that we changed that part of our operations in a hurry once we found out how unhappy it was making our buyers. Now that there is much more competition for sales on eBay, you're probably getting a lot of potential bidders hitting the "back" button rather than emailing you, particularly if they find your items shortly before they close.

Your buyer probably didn't pay for shipping because the invoice that got sent out for them defaulted to the only shipping rate you provided: Free. As far as your buyer's concerned, they've paid for their item and shipping.

Is your buyer bidding on anything else right now? If not, my guess is that they're not spending much time on eBay. They may not even check their email on a regular basis. Internet use in Japan tends to be pretty expensive for individuals and as a result, they're not glued to their computers the way we are in North America.

I would give up on trying to recoup the shipping cost for this item and consider this sale the one where I would turn around how I cater to international buyers and start researching and including international shipping rates. Focus on trying to get an address in Latin characters instead so the buyer can get his/her items as soon as possible.

How do I get latin characters??? haven't got a clue. Also I Guess I could send it in a flat rate box for $12.95 and hope it gets ther,e but I would hate to lose $180.00 if it doesn't get there. So you think I should just mail it and take my chances? Thank you so much for your advice!!

The best way to get the Latin characters required by USPS is to get your buyer to provide them, and hope that you haven't offended them by trying to hit them up for additional shipping costs.

Alternately, you could also try requesting your buyer's contact information from eBay and see what sort of address information is in there.

99.9% or more of mail sent from one developed country to another arrives and is delivered safely. Using a postal method where the postal cost is 20% of the value is just plain daft when you can insure the item for a couple of dollars with a third party insurer and send by FCMI for about $10.

The current feedback policy really puts us sellers at a disadvantage. I was dumb enough to sell to an unconfirmed address. When it did not arrive in a big hurry, the buyer wanted a complete refund, including shipping. I said no (my auction terms are VERY clear) but that I would work with them if they just gave it a bit more time. The buyer got increasingly frustrated then tried to extort me with threats. I reported them to ebay but of course, nothing. Well I say nothing - ebay essentially told me to do whatever the buyer wanted. He left negative feedback for me even as I was trying to work with him.

A couple of weeks later, I got the item back in the mail with stamps all over it saying the item was at his PO for 10 days, the buyer was notified to pick it up, but never did. Turns out he has several addresses. See the latest I got from him below.

What the problem? if I have another adress at ebay!?Is my problem.
After bidding I told you to send the letter to Daniel vasilescu adress. YOU don't know English? You are a stupid boy!
YOU ARE A DUMBASS. f*** you!! F*** YOU ALL YOur-FAMILY! GO TO HELL YOU AND ALL YOUR FRIENDS!!
ANYWAY, I'm very happy because the Paypal return my money!!Ha,Ha,Ha,stupid man!!!
YOU lost the money with shipping.Ha,,Ha,ha,....

The buyer name is 0254321, Romania

Shipping to a "confirmed" address hasn't been a requirement of PayPal's Seller Protection Policy for some time, Atlsimp.

As far as PayPal is concerned, if there's no satisfactory proof of an item reaching its buyer, the buyer is entitled to a refund, no matter how "confirmed" the address, no matter how detailed the tracking information showing "almost" delivery.

You just got a bad buyer. It's one of the hazards of the job of being an eBay seller. It happens to all of us. End of story.

At least you got the item back.

Well, I shipped the gloves to Japan yesterday priority and paid $12.95 to ship them . The money doesn't bother me but I just hope they get there, cuz their $190.00. and not insured. Where do you get 3rd party insurance ? Also the seller finally responded to my emails and wanted to cancel the transaction. I told him I had already shipped them, but he could ship them back and I would refund his money. I know he's probably mad and I'll probably get my first Neg. I did leave him very Positive feedback in hopes he does the same. From now on learned I better calculate my shipping out of the country. Anyway thanks for all the help.
Also Atlsimp, that email was awful!!!

did you ship them on 11/04/09? You need to purchase the insurance now or it would be too late!

try this one, it's cheaper!
