Seller email links & other links

I understand that beginning 10/1, sellers will not be allowed to have their email addresses in their listings. As a designer who's created many templates for my fellow sellers, I will be spending time revising such links for my clients - and upsetting them because I will have to charge for my time, as this is not a policy I could have foreseen. That's business, so clients and I will have to deal with that.

BUT - why???? It is not eBay's responsibility to protect me from whatever might confront me by having my email address in my listings! We sellers are adults who can manage such things!!!

And - does this policy extend to Me and store pages?
I've been using the contact member link for several months now in my design, but that's still a huge amount of old design I'll have to be modifying!

To A_C_Green -
After reading your post, I have been trying to attach photos to buyer inquiries via the ebay system messages.

So far, the only way I have figured out to send a photo to a buyer is to reply to the ebay message thru our regular mail service (such as gmail), NOT the ebay message inbox. If you hit Reply, and attach a photo there, the buyer will be able to see the photo in the regular mail service, but NOT in the ebay messages inbox.
Nowhere can I find any information about how to do this or how this works on ebay.
Hope that helps you though.

We looked into attaching photos to eBay messages in more detail, and here are our findings. My Messages does not support attachments. However, if you are contacted by a prospective buyer through eBay (My Messages), you can view and respond to these emails with an attachment from your personal email account (like Yahoo or Gmail). Buyers will be able to receive the attachment and view it using their personal email account. Having member communications this way is still safe, since eBay can track all your communications and help protect buyers and sellers. There maybe some instances when message can be returned unsent. You can get more information here Thanks unaperla

I bought & set up a URL that only contains a redirect to my eBay store so that repeat customers don't have to remember the long eBay version of my store's web address. I post this in all of my listings.

Again, when you type in my business URL: OldeCastleArts.com , all that happens is that you show up in my eBay store.

Will this still be allowed under the new policy?

Thanks Christine. Any suggestions on how to include this in my listings legally? As an active link labeled "see all of my items" perhaps?

I think there's a misunderstanding here, Christine. The external link transports someone "outside" into Ebay, not vice-versa. We understand that if someone "inside" of Ebay is taken out, it would not be in violation, but surely not the other way around?

Darn it you can't edit these... i meant to say, "if someone "inside" of Ebay is taken out, it WOULD be in violation, but surely not the other way around?"

I sometimes post a URL of a company's website and page where an identical item as the one I'm selling is advertised showing what that company's retail price is, which serves as an honest way to show the buyer the savings they can have if they purchase the item I am selling. Can I still do this??

Re: Seller email links & other links
Jul 12, 2011 03:01 PM
Right now it's not an active link, it's just a web address. I assume that anyone that's currently looking at my listings is capable of clicking on the "see other items" button. I just want to give them an easy to remember address so that they can find me in case they wander off and want to come back to buy later.

But I'm hoping that you're right about making it a link since it will take you to an internal eBay address. Since I've got a killer combined shipping rate, it should count as increasing the chances of a sale since the total cost per item drops dramatically when you buy multiple items.

What I want to avoid is having my listings ended by eBay while I try to figure out what exactly is allowed. It won't help eBay or me to have customers showing up and no products listed.

christine,

I do NOT want to violate eBay linking rules, but I DO want to provide my buyers with information, and very often, the best source is a blog post or something similar which is NOT on a selling site but which may contain ADS ---- I am sure I am not alone in wanting to get some clarity on this.

So, PLEASE, an answer here would be very helpful.

Hi itspostingtime,

Linking to a blog or an informational page that might also have a Google Ad on is acceptable - however, bear in mind that eBay will continuously be checking these links to ensure that the nature of the pages isn't changing.

Thanks

Let me be absolutely sure here: Pureoly informational links are still OK? I do not want to have listings canceled and lose the sales record on my BINs because of unclear policy. So let me give some examples of what I am talking about:

On my listings for goose quills, etc. I have a link to an off-ebay info page about how to cut a quill pen. This is not a sales site, just an excellent re-enactor page with good instructions and step-by-step photos THAT MY BUYERS APPRECIATE!!!!.

On all my feathers pages, I have a link to my eBay Guide on what makes a feather cruelty-free.

On my page for my "readings" and/or consultations (http://cgi.ebay.com/Rabbi-Gershom-Holocaust-reincarnation-past-life-consult-/120244244007?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1bff1d8e27I) have a link to the homepage of a documentary film I'm in -- no sales of the film there, it's just info, a YouTube link to view the film free. The purpose on my sale page is to verify I am the same person by comparing me in the film to the pic on the sale page. (Prior to adding this link, I did have queries about whether or not I'm the real Rabbi Yonassan Gershom who was seen on TV.)

The same sale page also has a link to the Wikipedia page on me and to an extensive FAQ on my reincarnation work that does have links to Amazon, etc. But NONE of these sites sell consultations with me, the ONLY place they can get those is in my ebay store. I feel if somebody is going to spend $54/hour to consult with me, they should have access to adequate info to decide if it is worth it, and third party opinions are better than me tooting my own horn on my own sale page.

SO -- are these types of links still allowed?

HELLO????? An hour later and no pink has answered these VERY SPECIFIC examples from my business. In fact, I don't see any pink answers showing up on ANY of the threads on this board as of 10:08 PDT. Are you ignoring us? Or is it too hard to give real answers to real examples instead of stock replies?

however, bear in mind that eBay will continuously be checking these links to ensure that the nature of the pages isn't changing.

With all due respect, that ain't gonna happen.

First -- continuously checking requires manpower. Manpower costs money. eBay has demonstrated over time that they are not willing to invest money to make this a better site.

Other than writing code for mindless bots, that is. Code which often makes mistakes in 'judgment' and causes immeasurable grief and time/monetary losses to sellers -- but unfortunately there is no real way to fix those mistakes because the humans in eBay CS are almost impossible to reach, have horrible training, no real empowerment to make decisions, and sadly, imperfect understanding of English.

Second -- there have been all sorts of things on eBay over the years that could have/should have been continuously checked, things which would have/could have made eBay a much better site than the mess it is now.

Some of these things continue to this day, or have had (IMO damaging) blanket policies slapped on everyone, not just the offenders.

Feedback padding and manipulation
Counterfeit items
Keyword spamming
Shipping/handling gouging
Feedback abusers
Serial "refund scam" artists
Sales of prohibited items
One-day listings (money grabs)

I'm sure others can add to the list.

My point is that eBay would rather ignore reports about individual offenders who could have/should have been continuously checked and dealt with individually -- and instead have chosen to create the most Byzantine and Draconian business model on the internet.

So yeah, sorry if I have a hard time believing that links will be continuously checked by a human.

As an eBay top rated power seller of Personalized photo gifts and personalized Photo cake edible icing sheets, I am confused as to if/how eBay will allow customers to upload their large photo files, (which most digital photo images of 10 by 16 inch size do run an approximate 9MB file size), to us sellers if we can not state in the listing as we do now, to email photo image files to us at: images@artdesigngifts.com so we can process their order. If we can not inform and advise them where to email them, what avenue will eBay provide buyers and sellers of personalized photo merchandise to send and receive these large photo image files, as well as mocked up preview images of their product for their approval for us to process? We sell many products which house as many as 10 photo file uploads per each one single personalized item, so how are they to get those files larger than 2MB to us, and how will they receive our proofs of their final image to them when it exceeds 2MB? How are we to send them their mocked up preview draft of their order for their approval? Are we able to add to our listing that they need to reply to our eBay messages only through their own personal email account in order to view and send and receive photo files and mocked up previews of the finalized custom purchase that they will then be able to view our attachments? Digital photos this day and age,far exceed 2MB file size, when buyer wants to use the highest quality photo image for the highest quality final product print, so how can we continue providing our high quality product with them needing to send us photo images restricted in file size? Also, the limited number of email attachments is of concern, as many customers change a design layout, replace first chosen photo file images with new ones, and want updated mocked up proofs of revised custom photo purchase, so how can we keep communications with the prospective buyer going to their satisfaction if we become limited by size and quantity of emails sent to them? Below is a link to sample listing we offer for sale I refer so you can see how sending and receiving high quality photo file attachments is crucial to our existence within eBay – without high quality photo file attachments we have no product to offer, thus no reason to be on eBay selling: Link Sincere Regards, ~ Marcia ~ Art Design Gifts eBay Store

Hi buyalot,

Attachments/pictures can be sent via My Messages (.jpg, .gif, .bmp, .png file types) --up to 2MB in size Buyers can save the attachments to their hard drive and view.

Also, if you normally use various pictures to show your item (which is great) and you don't already have an eBay Store, you may want to consider opening at least a Basic Store. Pictures are free (12 max per listing) with an eBay Store subscription.

Christine

Christine - We don't have your eBay internal Message system!!! - We can't attach anything to a message to a buyer or receive an attachment from them. I often get requests from buyers for a different photo or photo of the item being worn. I need their email addresses in the messages to be able to send a photo attachment to them.

Just wanted to add some info here. I talked to an ebay rep this morning and she said the newest policy on including email addresses in listings she had was dated June 3.

Sellers are not permitted to include contact information in portions of a listing like:
Title
Subtitle
Item Location
Image(s) - There are some exceptions for contact info within an image.

Such contact information includes but is not limited to:
Email address
Phone number
A Website address [This is only permitted when offering a specific domain name listed for sale].
Instant messenger ID

I have asked her to look into this and give me further clarification and whether this is changing. It is possible that she does not have the new policies as they are not in effect yet.

Okay Ebay Reps.... time to get it together and give us the correct answers. Can we have phone numbers and email addresses in the description or not?
I will have about 1500 listing to revise and that is a week of my life and lot of money for my company to have to put out just to make ebay happy. The least you can do is give us correct info.

Hi thegoldexchange*123,

You can include a phone number in your listing. Email address will not be allowed in listings starting October 1st. At that time, we will provide messaging in the listing flow when email or a violating link is detected and you will be able to make updates before submitting the listing. Sellers are encouraged to start updating listings including any listing templates now before October 1st so that your listings will comply.

You can get the highlights and details of email and links policy at http://pages.ebay.com/sellerinformation/news/links2011.html

Thanks,

rooster613,

I can't answer all your questions (and I don't work for eBay), but a few things I can answer:

1. A link to your ebay guide is OK, because the page is within ebay. It is only links to pages outside eBay that you need to be concerned about.

2. You need to review the existing link rules for videos. Links to videos are PROHIBITED. However, under certain circumstances, you can EMBED a video directly into your listing. This rule is not being changed.

3. A link to a Wikipedia page is OK.

4. The link to a FAQ page takes buyers to page that includes ads. That appears to be a grey area. If the FAQ is about you, I'd consider copying the FAQ itself to an ebay store custom page, which you could then link to without any problem.

I hope this helps.
