I don't think that VHS tapes will ever have a renassance like 8-track has .. finding a collector's market 30 years later. However, the great hope is that the box art becomes collectible. Many of those VHS tapes have artwork that differs from the DVD/BLU Ray. The most famous examples are the original Star Wars box covers.

james, no sale involved, just an exchange of gifts between friends. the way we do it is to have people sign up( on a new thread) and then we match 2 people together, and they email each other with what they have available, and agree on how many items they want to exchange with each other. both would pay for the same type of shipping, so nobody loses money, and everybody gets new movies! how does that sound?
we could do a secret pal exchange now and then too, it's great fun!

Belated reply: I still buy VHS if it's the only way I can get an old movie that I really want. And for "home-made" copies (of public-domain movies) I'd sooner have it on VHS than on DVD, to be honest. Why? Because a tape just works, more or less, whereas DVDs seem to be more sensitive to nuances of the recording and playing mechanisms (at least in my experience). For example, with some home-made DVDs that I've bought, the picture and/or sound jerks periodically, which is distracting and annoying. This doesn't seem to happen with the tapes I've bought. I suppose other people may have had different experiences but tapes work for me, as a rule.

Just noticed in the newspaper this morning all the companies that produce VHS tapes have halted production. It's official--tapes are now history!

You must read the LA Times, james. http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-et-vhs-tapes22-2008dec22,0,4649589.story Good article by Geoff Boucher, a cool guy and fellow comic-book geek.

They never really left. There was always somebody releasing vinyl. Pearl Jam has had all their albums on vinyl, Metallica has, I believe Queensryche has had most released on vinyl.

As for movies on vhs. Many DVDs are basically transferred from vhs direct, same print and all, so there is no improvement in quality, but perhaps preservation. Some DVD releases have tinkered soundtracks, while their VHS versions were as theatrical release. The "Send more cops" scene was altered in Return of the Living Dead on DVD, while the VHS was as theatrical. There are STILL some VHS that haven't been released on DVD.

VHS tapes. There are a few of us out here who like VHS films because of the things that are on them that remain original to the film. Consider VHS's of these two movies: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (Rankin-Bass version) and Bye, Bye Birdie! (Ann-Margret version) They both have funny crude film mistakes which get digitized out in DVD format and you'ld never see them. Both of these movies in VHS show houseflies bothering the characters. It's funny! It's hilarious especially during a romantic scene in Bye, Bye Birdie! Well, that's one reason that VHS's could possibly still have value! Here's a prayer for all of those people who still love their VHS's for whatever reason. Bless those relics!

That's a great point and hopefully more people realize how many times DVD's change the content of the film.

Another good example of that comes from the movie "Lost And Delirious" (starring Piper Perabo and Jessica Pare). For those that haven't seen the 2 different formats ... well lets just say, it's a critical reason why people buy this movie.

I have over 3,000 vhs tapes listed on the river and I do sell a few each day. IMO there is no money in them, except some rare ones, sold one last week for $79.95, and I had a whole 25 cents in it. :) Nearly all the vhs movies are listed for a penny on Amazon but the lowest I list is .99 cents. I figure that is my break even point by the time I use the bubble envelope and pay for COGS. For me, I use VHS movies mostly to build trust with a buyer and try to convert them to a t-shirt customer on my dot com with flyers and special coupons.

Yep, Vhs will still be around for a long time.

Yes I also heard that those people who have vhs tapes should buy at least two vcrs for they are coming to an end.
This was on a TV show last year, the sentence they used ,to get people to watch was death of a movie icon ( the VCR). So as the way of the 8 track the VCR is next, As with everything else people have huge collections of vhs tapes that they are dumping, and those who love them will pay out the butt in the very near future for a working vcr. And dont forget the tapes for cleaning the VCR. They are cheap.

Another thing that was interesting in the program was that burglars left vcrs behind:^O .

Just think sooner or later the DVD will not be around, you will have a mem card to put in the side of your TV and it will have untold no. of movies on it. So for those of us who love VHS get prepared.

i could do the memory card, just as long as i can KEEP them, and not "rent" them!!
and it still wouldn't solve the problem of unreleased on dvd movies....sad...

I already have 2 VHS/DVD combo players new in the box (in addition to the 2 I have hooked up to my televisions) ready for when the ones I'm using expire.

You can still sell VHS if they aren't on DVD.
You can still sell VHS if the DVD is out-of-print and expensive (some people can't and won't spend $50 on a DVD).
You can still sell VHS if the DVD is in print but very expensive, and you're willing to sell the VHS for a low price.

If you're going to sell VHS, you have to do some research to see how to price them. If they aren't worth much, you need to sell them it lots if you want to get rid of them.

There are tons of VHS movies that have never been released on DVD........you just have to know which ones they are.
