In reply to your request I will give the background and story of the prints. I was contacted in 1983 to take possession of the original paintings of this collection. They were found in Arizona by an unnamed scource and I was asked to sell the limited editon of 500 copies of John Fords Cowboy Kings of Western Fame the prints of the orginals. These prints and orginals were intended to be made pubic in Las Vegas for the opening of the John Ford Museum. The prints were signed by his set director Will Willams. The museum was never built. In 1986 I was invited to attend the Golden Boot Award for Western Screen Actor guild. I took the original paintings, set them in the lobby of the Burbank Hilton on display, plus I took two copies of the prints of 1973. One copy was given to Harry Carey Jr. on behalf of his father Harry Carey. The other went to private auction at the dinner for the boot awards charity. The private auction price for a set of prints went for $3,500. The rest of the collection was purchased by private parties (wealthy). I have portfolio #469 left. To hope to answer your question What they are worth? Priceless. Start to think in the terms of $50,000 plus for each print Portfolio. Hope this helps. Please respond if necessary.

Wow, thank you. I do have some more questions.I have the blue John Ford book and the 24 pictures, I don't see where those are signed. They are 11 x 16. I also have larger versions of 6 of them that are signed. How do I find a number? And if the smaller ones aren't signed, what does that mean? Than k you for your help!!!

In early 1972, famed film director John Ford and noted artist Will Willams began collaborating on a portfolio collection of famous western stars which would go out under the Ford name. Project was Ford's final artistic activity, which he dedicated to the fans of the American Westerns. Collection of 11x16 inch prints are excellent color reproductions of the original paintings featuring each a large portrait in a typical pose, dramatized by an additional action sketch of the star, designed to enhance pictorial interest. Williams has caught the feeling of each star perfectly and his work is a master's representation as any one may attest. A biography appears on the back of each print, tracing the career of the subject, offering salient facts to refresh the memory and background of the actor in nostalgic recollection.
Cowbyou Kings include Tom Mix, Hoot Gibson. Buck Jones, Ken Maynard, Tim McCoy, Tom Keene, George O Brian. Will Rogers, Johnny Mack Brown, William S. Hart, Harry Carey, Bob Steele, Warner Baxter, Ward Bond. Leo Carrillo, Wallance Beery, William Boyd, Bill Elliot, George Gabby Hayes, Joel McCrea, Randolph Scott, Gary Cooper, James Stewart and John Wayne.
In response your questions. In the set or series of 1 to 500 Limited Printing of 500 copies Published by Western Series, Inc Hollywood Ca only a few maybe 20 were signed on the upper left and right corners of the prints in the selected 20 porfolios. I know because having the series, I kept one of the 20 portfolios or so signed and one happened to be portfolio #469 which I have.
The signatures are in pencil and also in pencil is the portfolio number on each star's print. Signed by Will Williams, who was also a set designer for John Ford.
Your prints may be copies of this original Commerative edition of the work. I don't know, so I sent you the information, so that you may determine, what your prints are? At any rate they are and will continue to be of great interest to many fans, so maybe hold em for a while and offer more discussion of your holding via this venue.

Thank you for all of your information. I still feel like I am not sure what I have. My grandfather is coming to town soon,so hopefully I can get more info from him on where he got them etc. What I would like is maybe more contacts. So far you are the only one on Ebay that has any knowledge of what I have. Maybe Ebay is not the venue where I want to try and sell them. What do you recommend? Thank you for your time.

My grandfather was a director/producer in Hollywood and used Will Williams to do his movie posters. He still has some of the original posters from Will Williams. Do you know if he is still alive and if so where he is? My grandfather was involved with Mr Williams and anther person to raise money for the museum. My grandfather gave me some of the original movie posters, is there a market for them?

If you want to know something new about Will Williams. I made his website www.will-williams.com or will-williams-hollywoodart.com and met him recently. He's still living in Kassel, Germany and is working at his autobiography. You wrote that your grandfather was involved with Will Williams. Would he like to contact him? You can mail to gabriele@brueckmann-design.de because Mr. Williams got no computer.
