The 39 Steps, and The Trouble With Harry. John Forsythe was really over the top in Harry and 39 Steps is great black & white watching. I'm glad Harrison Ford wasn't of the Hitchcock era- I think he would have been cast in North By Northwest (a good all-purpose Hitch film). Watching Polanski's Frantic always makes me think Hitchcock/Ford would have been a match-up.

Hey it's raining here on the East Coast so what a good night to put in a Hitchcock movie on the old VCR.

My favorite is "Rear Window" (I love Jimmy Stewart)

Next is "The Birds" (Tippi was wonderful)

Then it's a toss-up between "Psycho" and "Vertigo"

Also in my modest collection is "Suspicion"

* I was just a kid when Psycho first came out. I can't believe my parents let us go see it at the movies. I have a vivid memory of that movie coming out at about the same time a hit song called "Dreamin'" was playing on the radio but I don't know who sang it.

OK,
Thank you for posting, I saw Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as a child with my parents... ha ha.
I did like REAR WINDOW. One of Stewarts best. We associate Hitchcock with The Birds, Psycho. The younger generation, is not familiar, unfortunatly with his greater movies, such as To Catch A Thief, and North By Northwest or even Lifeboat, Rope.
However I am in my mid thirties but I have been a Hitchcock fan for some time. Perhaps todays writers, could give us a movie this imaginative, creative once every 3 yrs to keep us buying movie tickets.

I've mostly seen the stuff he's done in the 50s and 60s however, my favorite is "Shadow of a Doubt" which came out around 1942 ( trivia note: Robert Quarry, who starred in "Count Yorga Vampire", is in this film as one of the children - not sure which one ). I also enjoyed "North by Northwest" and "Rear Window". I liked "Psycho" but I think it's been riffed on so much that it has lost a little of its luster for me.

My favorite is Rebecca. The plot twist really got me good the first time I saw it. On subsequent viewings, I began to take notice of the atmosphere, the scene composition, the editing, the music, etc. and have a greater appreciation for this film. I recently got the DVD with various actresses' screen tests for what's her name. Some are okay, others blah, and one — you can fiddle-dee-dee all you want, I'm not going say whose it was — was downright hilarious. All it needed was Hattie McDaniel playing Mrs. Danvers.

Psycho is my next favorite. Although later movies have stronger, more intense shock moments, nothing tops meeting Norman's mom when I was just 8 or so.

The Birds was great, but it's been so long since I saw it. I still get chills whenever I drive through Bodega Bay.

If I had to choose a fourth, it would be High Anxiety. Does that count?

The Lady Vanishes is my favorite, although it's been awhile since I've watched it.

Also great:

Rear Window
Trouble with Harry
39 Steps

Hitchcock made a cameo appearance in many of his movies. Here's a link showing which scenes from which movies he appeared in.

Good evening. Mine is Lifeboat. I'm a big John Steinbeck fan.

wow- Lifeboat! that's a good one. haven't seen it this epoch, but i have to think that was a tough film job, to keep it from looking like a handicam replay of a stage play. i thought Rope was too much like a recording of a play to stand as just a film.

I also loved Rebecca. My favorite is " The Man Who Knew Too Much" with Jimmy Stewart and Doris Day. Que Sera Sera...

The Birds scared me to death. Dial M For Murder is another great one.

Rear Window. Perfect casting: James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Raymond Burr, even Thelma Ritter. And the guy who played the piano across the courtyard was Ross Bagdasarian, aka David Seville, creator of the Chipmunks. Hitchcock is shown standing next to his piano in one scene.

The movie is scary as hell with NO gore.

I also love North by Northwest...and it mentions Ypsilanti. :)

And yes, Rebecca is also wonderful....Dame Judith Anderson and George Sanders are always great. And Laurence....what a babe. :)
