My eBay Beta Feedback

Jun 24, 2008 2:48 PM
Overview

A beta, by definition, is a work in progress about which we solicit feedback. So let me do a bit of introduction, then I'd love to hear from you.

The current version of My eBay is one we call "Classic." It is primarily blue. The beta, on the other hand, is primarily yellow and also includes "beta" in the breadcrumb and page title at the top of the page.

There are two reasons for changing anything: 1) It's broken. 2) There is room for improvement. We're making changes to My eBay Classic for several reasons that fall into both of those categories:

  • Customer Satisfaction: Surveys are showing a decline in satisfaction with My eBay Classic, dropping 15% last year. That's one indicator among many that shows that at least part of My eBay is broken.

We also see room for improvement. For example, while nearly 80% of buyers and sellers think that just the right amount of information is shown in My eBay, less than 30% think that information is
extremely organized. The ease of managing that information does not rate much higher.

  • Scalability: As more and more features get added, the My eBay Classic design requires more and more columns. This is creating a very cluttered appearance, which can only be eased by expanding page width--something not possible for a significant number of our members. For new members, this cluttered appearance also makes it seem that using My eBay is far harder than it really is.

In addition, our technical infrastructure needs revisions to be able to support both new features and new functionality that is now available on the Web.

My eBay beta has reduced clutter via a redesign and organization into three primary tabs: Activity (for your item activity and transactions), Messages (for communications), and Account (for account balance information for sellers, seller dashboard details, and member site and notification preferences).

A major change last May--in response to the first round of testing--brought back traditional containers/sections to My eBay (e.g., Watching, Bidding, Sold), and brought back columns into those containers so you could easily scan information and sort it. We're still in the midst of tweaking the beta in response to round 2 (e.g., still to come: sorting by seller ID in Watching, and adding "Add Note" in the Take Action menu).

We're also making changes to help put the "My" back into "My eBay." For example, we recently added the ability to organize items by grouping them into lists that you create. I'll describe that next.

Organize Your Way with Lists

If you ever wished you could create groups or lists of items in My eBay that are organized in a way that makes sense for your individual intentions--now with My eBay beta, you can. Lists help you do this, and put some of the "My" into "My eBay."

Why use lists? To organize your items in My eBay according to containers you name yourself. Items continue to appear in traditional containers such as Watching, Won, and Sold. But now you can also group them into lists such as "Research," and "Wish List," which are the two empty lists we give you to start. You can create up to 100 lists and name them yourself.

For more information about how to create and use lists, please see this discussion thread:

Sending Comments and Opting In and Out

As I said before and will continue to emphasize: We want to hear from you. Many of you will receive invitations to take a survey. All of you can send comments by clicking the Send Comments link at the top of the My eBay beta pages. This will open your email client so you can send us an email. People and machines read those emails and aggregate feedback, but because we receive thousands of emails via this route, we cannot reply individually to members who send feedback that way. Rest assured, we'll know what you said. But if you'd like some interaction, please use this discussion thread. Many people from the My eBay team read it, and I participate as much as I can. I
am part of the My eBay team, so you have direct access to us this way.

The vast majority of you can opt in and out of the beta as you wish. (Round 3 of testing will include a very small--but statistically significant--group who cannot opt out. See my next post for more information about why we're testing that way.)

To opt out of My eBay beta and return to Classic, click the "Opt out" link at the top of the My eBay beta pages:

You can also see this image here: Link

To return to My eBay beta from Classic, click the "Try the new beta" link at the top of the My eBay Classic pages:

You can also see this image here: Link

If those links do not appear on your pages, please refer to the next post.

How Testing Works

If you have been using the beta for a while, you are among the group that has been in our first two rounds of testing. As you know, we've made significant changes as a result of your feedback. You will continue to be able to opt in and out of the beta as you wish. (Opting out returns you to the My eBay Classic view.)

We're now starting a third round of testing. In this test, three groups of people will be involved, all picked at random. Each group will be the same size as the others:

  • One group will be a control group; no changes will be evident to you if you are in that group, except that you will not be allowed to participate in the beta or see its new features. You will remain in Classic.
  • One group will see My eBay beta, but can opt out. This group will be just like everyone who has seen the beta to date. You can opt in and out at will.
  • One group will see My eBay beta, but will not be able to opt out. Why no opt out? Because it’s very important that we be able to measure the effectiveness of our changes through the aggregations of clicks and activity. No one member is singled out, but together your numbers will be compared with the aggregate numbers in the control group. If we tested exclusively with those who volunteered, the feedback and performance data would likely not be representative of most members and, therefore, might lead us in a direction that does not help most members.

Both quantitative feedback from this testing and qualitative feedback from your comments will help inform our direction. We'll invite all members to try the new My eBay later this summer once we've made any necessary revisions based on testing and feedback.

Coming Soon

Because this is a beta, there will be continued improvements coming in several phases. For example, you'll soon be able to move containers/sections on your My eBay pages. We've also got some enhancements to the Summary page coming; the members who have previewed those changes have been quite excited about them!

What do you think? I welcome both negative and positive comments. It's particularly helpful if you can be a bit specific, so we know what works and doesn't. (A sweeping generality still helps us gauge things, but isn't nearly as helpful.)

By the way, for those of you who have left comments on both of the previous threads we've used for My eBay beta: THANK YOU. I've kept that feedback and the team will continue to refer to it.

I do not care for this new format. Makes it harder to find what you want and in what detail. The old format worked fine for me.

rich_knob_sales, in post #468 on the previous beta thread you asked about the sold total.

>Sold Totals: 14 items listed(last 7 days) 0 sold for $0.00

>What is the "sold total" above? I haven't sold anything in a few weeks[...] Is it for some reason picking up the unsold quantity and showing me that?
>Sold (0)
>Unsold (14)

That unsold total did look suspicious, but it turns out that the number is actually correct. The QA team checked this out and said that the 14 items noted as listed is sold + unsold. So this status line is effectively saying that of the 14 items you listed (that have since ended), 0 sold.

What i would like to see is a link t My Messages in the drop down menu when you click on the My ebay button at the top of most pages. What's the big deal, if I'm already signed in. It's a very important part of selling to keep tabs on questions & replies.
Thanks,

Ceril - thanks for an answer, but part of the issue was that it reads 14 items listed last 7 days, and the only things I had listed in over two weeks were the active items, so I repeat the question - where did it get 14? I was looking at this again today, and of course numbers have changed, and I see that I am now not getting the (last 7 days) after the number - ? Some change made someplace!
Thanks for the message about Mr. Bill. Seeing his baby picture is erasing the memories of his last week...

I REALLY like the new beta format, however.. there are (at this moment) two things I would like to tell you I am iffy about. 1. when I click on the "send comment" button it opens up my Express Outlook mail and I am not registered on ebay with that client. Therefore I do NOT like that. I wanted to be able to use the client I am registered on Ebay with. and..
2. I would like to be able to put my WON items in a folder to keep FOREVER! rofl when I tried putting them into a "list" folder it held only 3 items when I tried a 4th item it deleted my other three. I wasn't happy about that! lol
Thanks for letting me "ride the bull" ! Nice ride! I like it very much :)

Round 3, here we go again. (My heart is still stuck in my customized Phase 1-1/2. Sigh.)

A little share to those who are new to the My eBay Beta Program. If something looks strange and out of whack (more than usual), start clicking titles, arrows, etc. and most likely you'll find a little surprise show up on your screen. Changes that you can choose to make are added without any notice or directions. It's all up for discovery on your part. Reading here will help you find these changes that others will speak about, too.

Now my own comments:

LISTS - I transferred my information from storage and trusted using the lists. Now my list information evaporated! I have nothing any more except slight memories. I won't make that error again.

WATCHING - Still waiting for all of my watches on one page. No comparing with multiple pages.

WON - Wondering if it will ever show all items won under a single seller with the watched so I won't pay too quickly, again.

MESSAGES - Hoping that WON page can be accessed from here.

HOW ABOUT THESE - Waiting for it to be on only ONE page.

NOTES - Waiting for the promised return to one line with the quick notes again. HIGHLIGHTED (That was a quickly recognized error to take away from us.)

Thank you for the changes in the past weeks. Delete was returned to the top of the pages. Choices in the set up of what we wanted to see were returned at long last. Now it has the same information as Classic, except the page is has too much white space.

Still find yourselves going back to Classic for something you miss? Bookmark the page in your toolbar! Works for me.

I may have been quieter lately, but I've been watching the discussions. Also I've been writing it all in emails sending the hard copies directly to the "Send us your comments". (If that feature is not used, they will remove it from us again.) I feel that's important for those there reading the information, too.

Humbug for using the preview this before posting!!!

A bug to fix: When you click on the "feedback" number of any member, it states the member is not registered.

Send Comments Link and Your Email Client

Hello dolldavis.

>When I click on the "send comment" button it opens up my Express Outlook mail...

That's a browser setting for "mailto" links, such as the Send Comments link. In Internet Explorer, you can change this by clicking Tools > Internet Options > Programs. Then change the program that is listed for "Email." I use Firefox rather than IE, but I could not discover how to make the same type of change in Firefox.
