My eBay Features and FAQ

Nov 20, 2008 1:40 PM
The new My eBay, currently called My eBay Preview, will become the only version of My eBay available in the new year.

From May through October, 2008, the My eBay team solicited feedback about the new My eBay, which was in beta at that time. Many of you gave us specific product-related requests and feedback about the new My eBay (thank you!). As a result, we iterated on the design and features. We are now ready to retire the old version. On Tuesday, January 20, 2009, the new My eBay will be the only version of My eBay available.

This thread tells you about some of the new features and includes FAQ postings to help answer some questions members have sent to eBay Staff.

My eBay Features and FAQ

New Features

The new My eBay offers several new features, including:

  • Customized Summary page: The Summary page is the most trafficked page on My eBay. We’ve made it possible for you to include only the modules you want on the page. Select modules by clicking the Page Options link. You can make the page as robust or lean as you like. The old version of My eBay added modules to the page if you had transactional activity. Now you get a choice.

  • Customized modules: You can set the number of items to display in listing modules (e.g., Watching, Active Selling, Won) and see up to 200 items at a time--even for the Watch module. You can have up to 25 items displayed in a module on the Summary page, and can now paginate through the listings rather than having to go to a separate page to see more. You can also collapse and expand modules.

  • Drag and drop: Easily move modules on the page (up or down—and in many cases, even left and right!) by dragging the module header to the place you want it. Alternatively, you can move modules by clicking on the Edit menu in the upper right corner of each module.

  • Colorized modules: You may want to add color just to match your mood, or you may want to use color to help you organize types of items. To add color to the modules on any My eBay page, click the Edit menu in the module and pick a color.

  • Message module with preview: Perhaps you have visual voicemail on your phone. Now you can also see who left you an eBay message with the Messages module available for the Summary page. To add it, click Page Options on the Summary page.

  • Collapsible menus: You can collapse (and expand) the left menu. So, for example, if you don’t sell, you can collapse the Sell section.

  • Delete offers: If you no longer want to see an expired or declined offer, you can now delete it.

  • Saved searches previews: On the Saved Searches page (formerly known as Favorite Searches), you can expand any search to see a thumbnail preview of up to 20 results. Of course, you can still click through to see the entire set of search results. You can also do this on the Saved Sellers page to see items offered by your favorite sellers (or your competitors!).

  • Saved search module: You can add a module to your Summary page that shows the results for your favorite saved search. For example, that would allow you to tell quite quickly when a rare item was found on eBay that matches a very specific search result you created for a hard-to-find item. On the other hand, if you love to peruse a certain category, you can create a saved search for that category and add it to your Summary page. This is a hidden gem. To get to it, you must click Page Options on the Summary page, then select the merchandising drop-down menu that shows “How About These?”

  • Seller features: By popular request, three new features are available just for sellers. Now you can set your default My eBay page to be any standard selling page (e.g., All Selling, Sold), even if you are a Selling Manager/Pro subscriber. And starting this week, you can see page views in your Active Selling container and see an indicator when a buyer leaves you a note during checkout.

  • Customized Shortcuts: A new module provides shortcuts (e.g., bookmarks) to many popular eBay pages. You can also add your own shortcuts by editing the Shortcuts module and adding the URLs for your favorite pages that are anywhere on the Web.

  • Lists: A brand-new feature in My eBay lets you organize items into categories that make sense for you. For example, you may want to organize your watched items into those you are researching, gifts you may buy for someone, and those you especially want for yourself. You can do that by creating lists named Research, Gifts, or Wish List (or anything else you want to name them). You can learn more about lists on this discussion board thread:

New Homes for Some Old Features

In some cases, you’ll see some new locations for some familiar features.

  • Add Note is no longer a button. Rather, you can easily add a note about an item from the action menu associated with each item. Click the drop-down arrow to open the menu of options, which includes “Add Note.” You can also revise or remove a note with this action.

  • Favorite Searches and Favorite Sellers have been renamed. They are now Saved Searches and Saved Sellers. You can find them under the Organize section of the left menu.

  • Favorite Categories are no longer in a separate section. Instead, you can add items or entire categories to a saved search. To save a category as a search, just browse to that category, then click “Save this search” at the top of the category listings page. Thereafter, you can quickly see items in that category by using the Saved Searches page in the Organize section of the left menu.

  • The move up/down graphics are no longer on the module headers. Instead, you can move modules up and down—as well as left and right—with the Edit menu. You can also drag a module to another location on a page.

My eBay Features and FAQ

How do I put different modules on my Summary page?

The Summary page includes several popular modules, including Watching, Bidding, and Active Selling. If you want to get rid of some of those modules and/or add others, click the Page Options link.

Check the checkboxes in front of those modules you want on your page. Note that some modules include other choices—these are found in the drop-down menus that follow the checkboxes (e.g., How About These can be swapped out for a special Saved Search module).

Even if you do not sell, you may want to include the Active Selling module somewhere on the page. Then, in the unlikely event that a bad guy takes over your account, you’ll immediately notice that someone has listed items with your account. If you don’t want to see a “you’re not selling anything” notice in the module, simply collapse it. The module will then be very thin, but you’ll still be able to see an item count.

You can rearrange modules on the page to place them where you want. Click the Edit menu in an item module (such as Watching, Active Selling, and so on), then choose one of the Move options. Soon, you'll also be able to drag modules to the location of your choice.

How do I collapse modules on a page?

You can collapse a module by clicking the Edit menu. Choose Collapse to squish the vertical height down to nothing but the header/title. To expand it again, click the Edit menu. Where "collapse" was is now an option to "expand."

My eBay Features and FAQ

How Can I See Page Counters for Items I'm Selling?

Go to the Active Selling page. There, in the Active Selling container, page views are listed in the column heading with number of watches. Click the icon in the column heading to populate the page views (counter) information. Click it again anytime to refresh the data.

Why must you take this manual step to get the information? Given the average number of active listings at any one time, it would be a significant hit to page load time if all the page view data for every item was loaded each time the page was refreshed.

This feature is currently not available on Summary or All Selling pages, so please be sure to go to the Active Selling page to find it.

My eBay Features and FAQ

What's Next?

At the time of this posting, the new My eBay is scheduled to become the only version of My eBay on January 20, 2009.

In a few weeks, several more features will be available in the new My eBay. Here are some of them:

  • Feedback container for Summary page. It will be off by default, but you can add it to the Summary by clicking Page Options. This container will show Recent Feedback in one tab and items Awaiting Feedback in the other.

  • Two new menu items in the My eBay menu in the global header. The global header at the top of most eBay pages includes a menu bar: Buy, Sell, My eBay.... "Won" and "Messages" will be added.

  • "Payment Total Requested" status bar in the Sold container. Today there is a status bar (red) that alerts a seller when he or she has an unanswered question. Now sellers will also be able to tell, at a glance, when a buyer has requested a payment total.

  • A filter for Second Chance Offer in the Active Selling container. Look for this in the View menu.

  • Delete expired Second Chance Offers from the Offers container.

  • New sort option on the Saved Searches page: email date (last sent).

  • Sticky Saved Search module on the Summary page. The drop-down menu that lets you specify which Saved Search to view on the Summary page will be sticky, so that you can see the results of your favorite search when you come to the Summary. This is a useful way to see whether any search results were returned for a hard-to-find item you're seeking. Of course, it's also a good "window shopping" module for popular searches that return loads of results.

  • New look for Totals. The Totals module is getting an overhaul. The "number of bids" previously available in the old My eBay is making a comeback. "Bids" is the total bid count for all items the seller has listed.

  • Neighborhoods link in Shortcuts. The link to the page that shows the Neighborhoods you've joined will be added to the Shortcuts module. There, you can unjoin groups if you need to. If you don't want to see this link in Shortcuts, just click the Edit button in the Shortcuts module and uncheck the Neighborhoods box. And remember, you can always edit the Shortcuts module so that it includes links to your favorite or frequently-used Web pages, whether on or off ebay.com.

Also planned (no ETA yet available):

  • Keep your sort orders sticky during the session (i.e., as long as your browser window is open). The sections such as Watching, Active Selling, Bidding, and others, currently revert to the default anytime the page is refreshed.
