Help Please - How do I respond?

Nov 2, 2009 8:16 PM
I have a buyer that won two of my auctions. The first ended on 10/30, the second on 11/01. In my listings I state that I will combine shipping for items won within a three day period - so no problem. I did happen to notice that this buyer leaves a lot of negative feedback!!

So, my guard is up. I'm a good, honest seller, so I'm cautious but not too concerned. Today, I get the following message from buyer "I am unable to use paypal due to security reasons I am told on the ship. I will pay on the 11th - is that alright? If so, I wouldn't mind bidding on a couple of other thingw!"

What should I do????

That's a tough one to call. If you agree to wait and he does buy other things he will expect you to combine shipping on them all and it will be well over your 3 day period. So if you don't I can see a negative coming your way. You can't cancel the auction and get your Final Value Fee back unless he agrees to it and I can't see him doing that either. You could file for an unpaid item after day 4 of the end of the auction but if he responds to the unpaid item process he can leave you a negative that ebay won't remove. I think he has you over a barrel here. Even if you combined all the items he wants to buy and waited until God knows what day he decides to pay after he is done bidding on the new items he could still find something to complain about and leave you a negative. In fact he can leave you a negative for each item he purchases if he wants to. I don't honestly know what I would do in this same situation.

So this is what it's like to be between a rock and a hard place....

As this buyer has MAJOR issues with shipping times the only thing I can suggest, to prevent the Neg, is to be prepared to ship Priority the day you recieve payment. As far as allowing them to buy more I am inclined to say yes because of their free spending handout of Negs. What I mean is they are likely to Neg. you if you refuse even if you ship original 2 items promptly.

Sorry you're between a rock & a hard place!

Just thought of something.... Ask them when are they returning from cruise.... Then you can be prepared for payment & immediate shipment!

File a Non-Paying Bidder on this person as soon as legally possible!

Also... What kind of scum-bag goes shopping on eBay from a cruise ship?
Either this person has NO life, or this person works on the cruise ship.
Regardless of their excuse, file a Non-Payment thingy as soon as you can.
If this person had his own laptop and server he could easily pay.
If the ship's computer won't let him pay with PayPal, it wouldn't let him bid on eBay either.

I would also Block this person Right Now, so that they cannot bid on any of your other items.

Accept No Excuses... Play by the Rules!
Either they pay, or file on them.
Since this person did not contact you before bidding they are bound by the contract they entered when they bid.

its a shame when the buyer knows they have you in the trick bag! and what gets me is what makes them think they are even going to win the auction they want you to wait on? that is why i changed my combined shipping to same day auctions only. i tried the 7 day thing and it was a nightmare of buyers trying to take advantage of you. i still get requests but unless it is a very good customer i explain that i know longer do that type of combined shipping. and the excuse about the pay pal thing is a LIE! i would block the buyer then open a UPI. sometimes you just got to stand up for whats right.

Dunno but here is my thought. The last neg they left was because they were on a cruise and seller wanted to be paid right away...so I wouldnt open a non pay dispute BUT I would ask when they will be home from the cruise and actually a few questions about the cruise...where they are, how is the weather, the entertainment etc act like you care, I would also tell them that right now $$ is alittle tight so would prefer they do not bid on any more items because they wont be home for 10 days but if they get home and items are still available they are more than welcome to buy from you again. Just some random thoughts, hope it all works out for you...I have a ton of late/non payers in the last 2 weeks and its killing me

Did anyone notice this, one auction ended 10-28, he/she left feedback on 11-2 saying the item was nice???? If they are on a cruise, how can they know it arrived and it is nice?

this Dude/Dudette is BS'ing you.

I also would BBL, plus open a UPI ASAP.

Good luck

Yeah, looks like he has you between a rock and a hardplace. If you can wait for the money it is OK, if not just tell him NO. I am sure you put your timeframe for payment in the listing, so he is not following the rules! This is actually a type of extortion. But, money is money, and if he pays, you have acheived your goal? THIS is exactly why eBay's new policies SUCK for sellers.

Re: Help Please - How do I respond?

I really do appreciate everyone's advice. Since these are not expensive items (and as a small seller, I'm terrified of neg fb), I can afford to wait, so I have decided to play along and give the buyer the benefit of doubt.

Here is what I sent her: "Hi,
Thanks for contacting me about this. I'm sure you understand, this is making a big exception. Since you are unable to pay until the 11th anyways, I'll combine shipping on other items.

Just curious, do they restrict all on-line banking transactions? I'm just wondering what their security reasons are.

Where's the cruise?"

Here is the response: "I understand and I appreciate very much that you are making this exception. I am on a meditterean cruise - international waters. Last week, when I won my first auction that is when I realized I could not send cash. It is a 3 week cruise. If you need to cancel the transactions, I won't blame you - I totally understand!!"

This made me feel a little better. I know, perfect opportunity, but I'm scared of a trap.... when did I become paranoid??? Besides, she left neg for seller that wouldn't let her pay after the cruise.

Anyway.. I responded "Hi,
No need to cancel any transactions - I'm happy to work with you and I do appreciate your letting me know what is going on.

Let me know when the last auction you are bidding on has ended and I'll send you a combined invoice.

Go enjoy that cruise!!! (I'm jealous!)"

I know, I know... I can hear the groans. I'll let you all know how it turns out. Assuming she pays, I'll mail her items off as quickly as humanly possible!!

That is just Soooo Sweet!

But if I ever go on a cruise to the Mediterranean...
Please beat me about the head if you see me shopping on evilBay while I am there!
