It's Hard to Make a Buck on eBay Now Days!!!
Aug 15, 2012 08:21 PM

I sold an item let’s say is worth $120 retail on eBay for $70. It is brand new and is still in its original box. I had to send it us parcel for $15 since I couldn’t afford to pay $36 for priority mail since I only made $70 on an item I had paid $120 for. So I opt to get insurance for $100. I sent the item on the 18th of last month and the estimated time of arrival was on the 27th.

When I received an email from the buyer on the 9th of this month I was surprised that he still had not received the item. So I emailed him back reassuring him it would be there soon and I gave him the tracking number and told him had had also purchased insurance.

Then he emailed me again on the 11th saying he was upset and wanted me to rectify the matter asap. So I called the 800 number and they said it had already been delivered on the 23rd. So I emailed him back telling him it had been delivered and gave him the tracking number again. It’s already been delivered right?

This has been happening over and over again for almost every other transaction I have sold for the past few months of this year. People who are trying to say they didn’t receive the item I sent them in good faith. I have learned my lesson and will not send anything I sell on the Internet without a tracking number and insurance now days because people take advantage of you if you don’t take precautions. The buyers don’t care if you are just trying to make enough money to pay your bills and buy groceries. I am a small fish. I cannot compete with those big business eBayers who can afford to ship things for free.

Well that customer has now filed a complaint against me today. Unbelievable! So I called eBay support and they said they called and checked the tracking numb

Hey PT'ers...is it just me or am I not understanding posts anymore.

The OP pays $120 for an item , then sells it for $70.

They pay $15 for shipping cuz they can't afford $36.

They pay $? for insurance.

There's no mention of any fees here.

They say they can't afford to ship items for free.

&

"they are just trying to make enough money to pay their  bills and buy groceries"

Do the math and please tell me how anyone can make any money at all that way ......PLEASE !

Komo I think he just needs a bit of education on how ebay works now a days.

OP if you didn't ship it free that means the buyer paid the shipping so you are not out any money to ship except the shipping fee. When sellers ship free we roll the cost of the shipping into the item.

There's no reason to buy Ins for items valued under $100,$150 or $250? I can't remember-someone will know the correct amount,,but you are automatically covered by USPS for lost or damaged items.

The item I see you recieved $70 for is a motorcycle helmut.I don't understand how it would have cost $36 to ship a helmut Priority? I just shipped a mens Large leather helmut last month to a friend in CA-I am in NJ and it was only around $13 with tracking. For something to cost $36 Priority it has to weigh a lot or be a huge box which a helmut is neither. I've shipped boxes far bigger than a helmust and that weighed more for a lot less. Not sure what went wrong there.

The only thing I can think of off hand is you calculated the wrong weight.Did you use a scale or just guess?

I also see you have no returns on your items. That is asking for problems. Many buyers know when you have no returns if they file a SNAD or as you've said claim they did not receive it even when tracking shows it was delivered most times ebay will give the buyer back their money out of your acct without ever making the buyer return the item. Then you are out the item and all monies it sold for, shipping included along with the fees.No returns mean zip with ebay.Their rules trump anything you say in your listings. Most sellers have less problems by accepting returns.

Stick around the board here and read up on things. Ask questions everyone is happy to help. You can make money, but knowing how things work is always a major plus.  :-D

I can't really make heads or tails out of this post either.  But I will say this, eBay doesn't work well for everything you want to sell.  A very heavy hemet that cost $120 to buy and will only sell for $70 and is  $36 to ship is a POOR item to sell on eBay.

It's that simple.  Find other things that you can actually sell for a profit.  That takes education and research.  If you don't want to do that, you will NOT make money on eBay.

lots of buyer scams these days on small time sellers that ebay refuses to protect when it comes to outrageoys and even obviously fake buyer claims!

Ten years ago eBay used to be an endless field of flowers and greenery under clear blue skies. Full of innocence and opportunity for all who partook. Now when I think of eBay I see a grey damp dirty soot stained factory infested with paled skinned underpaid, starved worker-slaves toiling out a meager living under a black smog infested industrial sky where 'big brother' helicopters fly above gunning down anyone who speaks up or gets out of line

Crash course in selling profitably anywhere:

- Know the market value of what you will be selling, before you sell.

- Know the fees and costs involved with the sale ahead of time.

- Know the rules and policies (at least the basics) of where you intend to sell.

- Research, research, and more research.  Research constantly.  Things change all the time.

Most importantly, remember this quote from someone on the boards, whose name escapes me,

"You make your money when you buy the item, not when you sell it."

On that last point, let's use the helmut as an example.

Here is the basic equation:

Expected price - eBay fees - PayPal fees - shipping - other costs - desired profit = maximum acquisition cost

First, let's say your pricing research (advanced search > completed listings) shows that you can expect to gross about $85 on the item, shipping included.  For a helmut of this size and weight, Parcel Post shipping to Zone 8 (the farthest zone) will be $19.24 (I'm assuming for this hypothetical that the helmut weighs 12 lbs. packed, and am including $0.19 for online DC).  eBay final value fees at 9% of $85 will be $7.65.  PayPal fees at 2.9% of $85 + $0.30 will be $2.77.  We'll assume that this is a free listing, with no other costs involved.  Let's further assume that desired profit is 20% of the selling price minus worst case shipping (Zone 8), or $13.15.  Now we have the numbers for the equation.  You'll notice that I don't differentiate between item price and shipping charges.  It's all treated as revenue, and you will receive 1 payment that includes both.

So, we have:

$85 - $7.65 - $2.77 - $19.24 - $0 - $13.15 = x

x = $42.19 maximum acquisition cost

At a cost of $42.19, the helmut can be profitably sold for $85, including the highest Parcel Post shipping cost.  If the actual shipping is lower via the shipping calculator, eBay final value fees and PayPal fees will both be lower, and more profit is made.  And of course, if you can acquire the item for less than $42.19, more profit is made.

As for Item Not Received (INR) and Significantly Not As Described (SNAD) disputes, these come with the territory.

You can reduce these disputes significantly by voluntarily accepting returns for at least the minimum of 14 days, and setting your Buyer Requirements to their maximum levels.

To win an INR dispute, you need to have online-viewable proof of delivery.  DC is fine for payments of less than $250.  And, it's free for Priority Mail and First Class Parcels, and only $0.19 for other USPS services, if you print your postage online.  For payments of $250 or more, Signature Confirmation is required.

In short, get DC on everything that you ship (SC if needed).

There's really not much you can do about SNAD disputes, except to prevent them from being opened in the first place.  The best defense is this:

- Describe your item as if there are no pictures.

- Photograph your item as if there is no description.

- Accept returns voluntarily.

Reading this and other discussion boards will give you great tips and ideas on profitable selling, which many of us do everyday, and how to avoid buyer disputes when possible.

BBF's post should be posted on each and every one of these kind of threads that are started.  Not to be rude or anything, but these threads always rub me the wrong way.   It's not rocket science folks.  It's simple math.  If you can read, if you can add and subtract and have even the tinest bit of common sense....you CAN make a buck here.  Or even two.

Re: It's Hard to Make a Buck on eBay Now Days!!!

All good, and valid points - but who says the OP was buying the helmet to sell? Maybe they bought it, and it didn't work out, or they no longer need it - thus, paid $120, sold for $70....

IF OP paid $120 with an intent to sell on ebay, wellllll..... oops.

IF OP thinks they can get new retail value for an item on ebay, wellll... oops.

At any rate - clearly, OP, you have sold on here before, and seem to want to continue to do so - check out some of the above advice - especially about the shipping - shipping is my highest cost every month. Higher than cost of goods, even. You have to really look at all options, and do the one that fits best. For a simple plan (which we all can make a mistake on from time to time): Heavy items= flat rate (if they fit in the packaging), light items = don't use flat rate (it's for heavy items). Parcel post = not usually a good idea (for costs, and shipping time). And by all means - get some Regional Flat Rate Boxes free from USPS - they don't take up much space, and for 2 lb and heavier items, the rate will beat most flat rates, and usually parcel post, and they'll come with the delivery confirmation you are lacking.

Happy Selling!

If you "collect" things, and you are not a part time ebay seller, well... you're just a hoarder.

I also assumed that the purchase was a non-returnable item that was purchased on mistake, not especially to sell on ebay.

I've sold many of those! The starting point is just different.  You have to not figure the original price into your calculations at all (mental calculations anyway).

You've got the item and that money is spent. I did something similar with some clothes from one of my kids. Bought, did not fit. Did not get returned in the amount of time (yes, I'm busy). Or maybe lost the receipt. Amount to return for was less than I could get here (from Target). Sold items on ebay for more than the refund amount would have been.

I don't calculate the cost of these items at all in the same way that I would something I bought on purpose to sell on ebay.

I'm not going to be able to sell the pajamas for full price (that either I or a grandparent paid!). But I will make some money and more than just donating them or giving them away.

I always take those "mistakes" and count them as zero cost becuase anything I make is better than nothing.

It is different if I bought an item to resell -- then I count the cost of it as part of the purchase price.  So if I buy an item for $5 to resell for $20, this is a totally different transaction for me than if I bought an item for $50 retail and I get $20 for it on ebay.  I may be happy with both (usually by the time I list the $50 item on ebay that money was spent so long ago that it doesn't even count -- to my brain).

Anyway, just the weird way my brain works, but I think those types of transactions are just different for me. At least how I perceive the profit/loss margin.

Re: It's Hard to Make a Buck on eBay Now Days!!!
Aug 18, 2012 12:38 PM

Right, I also thought the OP's item was just being sold to get some money out of it.

I look at it kinda like Sandy looks at it, but it has to give me more money on eBay than what I could take by itemizing it as a donation to charity.

Some things I do rationalize the purchase - cosmetics, for example. Some of the makeup counters give a "gift" with purchase. It is usually a little cosmetic bag I have no use for, so I sell that bag on eBay and count it as money off the original purchase. LOL. Not sure my husband thinks of it that way!

Kansas- It's likely your are correct about this OP.  In that case, I'm not sure why he's complaining.    I often sell my mistakes too.  Sometimes I am pleasently suprised by how much I get!

Well, I'm just super busy today...back to work.

Once again...another OP who doesnt return to their own thread......why even post advice?

For other people who read these threads.

The other posters above are correct.  If the item being sold is a purchase that cannot be returned, for whatever reason, then the original retail price paid is a sunk cost that is not considered at all.

In these cases, you are simply trying to recover some, or possibly all of your loss.  For pricing purposes, your acquisition cost on the item is $0.
