It seems to me that the burdens of PayPal's reversal and chargeback policies disproportionately fall upon more reputable established sellers who remain open for business with active PayPal accounts, as opposed to drive-by scammers who close shop and empty their PayPal accounts (leaving nothing for the buyer to recover). That is why you hear so many horror stories from sellers who believe they were unfairly treated. The real scammers never complain, they just run away and quietly wait for another day.
As an online seller, I NEED PayPal. There really is not much of a choice - yet. Over 90% of my buyers choose to pay via PayPal. If I stopped accepting PayPal, I would lose most of my business. So I accept the risks in return for much more business.
As a buyer, I use PayPal because it is very convenient and much safer than other online payment providers. And because it does not cost me anything.
What I don't like, however, is when PayPal turns a blind eye to seller tricks and games designed to make buyers give up their PayPal rights. The vast majority of buyers are honest and do exercise their PayPal rights quite responsibly.
NO, I don't work for PayPal and I have had disagreements with them in the past. But I am not ready to stop using them, either as a seller or buyer. At least not until a better alternative comes along.
