A Template to Make a Template (tool)

Someone recently asked for a Template to Make a Template. Which brings us to another tool I've been contemplating for some time. It's a merger between the popular Pretty Borders tool and a form filler (see my next post). NEW Pretty Borders Plus! (a Template to Make a Template)
The basic template shape is a picture frame of multiple nested borders that can be resized and colorized. Over 150 background patterns are available on the palette, or any user-hosted graphics can be added to the palette for the background layers. Predefined form-filler slots support titles, text, and photos, and there are two blocks for custom codes. The slots are right there in the template, so it's almost like a WYSIWYG editor, but not quite (individual words can't be styled).     http://www.isdntek.com/tagbot/prettybordersplus.htm Everything happens on the same page, so there is no going back and forth or waiting for the server to repost data. While the in-page view is good for text and photos, user-added codes and scripts will only display on the popup preview. The novice would just use the palette to colorize and decorate the borders, set the fonts, and would fill in the auction text and hosted photos. The tool will take care of applying styles and dealing with line breaks when it generates the code. A more savvy user might go a littler further and add icons in place of the titles, and might drop in some Quick-Button code, a thumbnail gallery, or a cross-sell script. The neat aspect is the same color tool is on all of these pages, so it's easy to copy/paste the color codes and get matching add-ins. Since it sounded sort of like a template to make a template, I've decided to make it just that, and let both users and designers take advantage of the tool to create templates for personal use or resale. The background patterns will be hosted for personal users, but designers will need to rehost them. :) Currently, the add-ins may not be resold, so I'll have to think more on that aspect.     http://www.isdntek.com/tagbot/prettybordersplus.htm (Due to length constraints, other methods follow in next post)

mylittlefairytales, I don't have a Mac, but if you download and install the free FireFox web browser, you should be able to use the free Pretty Borders Plus! (a Template to Make a Template). You download FireFox for here here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/personal.html

New Feature: The PrettyBordersPlus tool now has a set of built in borders. So if you are color challenged or design depraved, you can now select something basic (or garish) as a starting point. The sample borders should also give users different ideas for using background tiles in novel combinations. :)

lost-lids, I looked at your auction with a template, and it looks like there may have been a copy/paste problem. Either the very end of the template wasn't copied, or when it was pasted into TurboLister, part of TurboLister's credit code at the bottom was broken or only partially overwritten. There is a bracket missing from the code.

You should be OK with your next template as long as you are careful not to overwrite or lose any partial codes. ;)

Hello,

about the pretty borders/tool
Can you clarify the resale terms of use.
" Resale: If you plan to sell the templates you create with this tool, any selected icons must be rehosted on your own server, and the image links in the code should be changed to match. When these icons are used in this or derivative works where the visible copyright notice is changed, please maintain a small graphics copyright acknowledgement within the source code. "

What do you mean selected icons?
Would I really need my own server, don't you mean a hosting service?
How to change image links?
What is a small graphics copyright acknowledgement?

Thanks for clarifying for me!

Hi acraftqueen,

If you are using a PrettyBorders template for your own auctions, there is nothing to change. The background tiles (icons) can remain hosted where they are.

However, if you are a "template designer" creating a template at the PrettyBorders site that you will resell to others:
1) You may use the background tiles that are available within the tool in a template that you sell, but you must rehost those background tiles on your own image host or website;
2) and you are not required to maintain a visible copyright notice, but if you don't, please add a comment within the source code giving credit for use of the background tiles.

If you don't use any of the standard background tiles, no credits are necessary.

To clear up the confusion, an icon is a background tile; and a small graphics copyright acknowledgement is a comment within the code acknowledging who owns the background tiles (where they were copied from).

Any Help is much appreciated!

It looks like you may have used a default setting of 400x300. You can set the image size at ClicPic Online (look in the styling area) to anything larger. It would be too hard to edit the code by hand to change the image size.

The tool site only creates click code, but it is easy enough to find and replace every "onclick" with "onmouseover".

You might also want to look at the ClicPic Deluxe gallery maker. It has quite a bit more versatility.
