Hi Karen,
I love what you posted to start this thread. I have saved it for later use.

As far as what you posted from Augustus, I really hate to see you post that for the reason that we work so hard to train users to get their photos fast loading and along comes eBay with statements, "under 4mb" "300 to 600 KB"? Even if he is speaking of their own host that is expensive, other users are going to think that those settings are OK. Quality set to 90%, none of us recommend that.

Hi Bob, that's a fair evaluation, so let me rephrase this....

If you are using eBay Picture Services (EPS) to host your photos, follow these guidelines for picture prep:

However, if you plan to Self-Host your photos, using third party hosting or your own website, you will need to resize photos and compress your file sizes prior to posting them in your auction.

Here are some pages to help with self hosting issues and picture preparation.

Karen,
That will help some. Even his recommendation of size of 1024x768 is wrong even for EPS. Not one of us would tell users to have a picture that wide, think of the users with smaller screens and scrolling back & forth.

It looks like Augustus never was poor and had to start with dial up and a 15" screen. He sure doesn't take them into consideration when writing help pages.

I guess I have said enough to get me into trouble but I and others have worked so hard over the years and to have an employee come along and tear it down.

His recommendation of 1024 is not wrong for EPS because EPS will shrink it to 400 (or 800 for supersize) and users need to start with good quality before the shrink (that copy of a copy JPG problem). They will, however, have a problem with that size if they are on slow dialup, since it will take considerable time to upload to EPS. :( In that case, the Enhanced uploader would be a better option because Enhanced processes and shrinks the image on the computer BEFORE it is uploaded to EPS. Or dialup sellers can shrink their images closer to the actual size for faster uploads to EPS. But in that case, they may see a little more loss of quality.

We just have to be careful, as you pointed out, that self-hosters don't use that information. The info is for EPS photos only, and the links are posted here as reference material when guiding members posting EPS images.

I'm bumping this because when the new gallery changes come into effect, we may need some of these links.

Bob...I'm Warren, the guy that couldn't get a picture of my old Sea King outboard into eBay. Have made progress and put two more lisings into play, each with ONE pic'. I put the others in the URL list slots in the page, but I only get the picture in the fist slot. I'm thinking of trying to take out the first URL, as it always shows in the 'change listing' re-run, but that may only replace the first pic', who knows... So, at least I do have one pic' in each listing, which is better than nothing~
Check 'em out... 1883warren
THANKS!

I'm creating a listing where the first photo is a "Stock" photo, which appears 1st. I then added another photo of my own. When I review my listing my 2nd photo appears in the gallery, not the stock photo I wanted. Any ideas?? Thanks in advance.

jmazz-1350, that is the way the gallery photo currently works. The stock photo should appear in item specifics.

If you upload your own photo, it becomes the first free photo and gallery photo.

If you have no other photo to upload, then the stock photo is pulled from item specifics and is used as the gallery photo.

martins400e, first, check to see that you are using a supported browser:
Link

Then make sure there is not a popup blocker working against the image uploader popup window. Popup blockers may be part of your browser or may be part of some third-party security program you might have installed.

If you are attempting to use the "standard" flash uploader, be sure you have Flash 9 installed.

If using the "basic" uploader, check out the troubleshooting tips on this page:
