Enhanced Uploader Troubleshooting Guide

Nov 6, 2008 11:52 AM
Here on the forums, we have been getting a high number of people reporting problems with the Enhanced Uploader. This is written as a troubleshooting page so members can work through the problem and be back to normal. Though you may already know what is posted in the first few paragraphs, please read from start to finish so that it will make more sense.

Is the Enhanced Uploader Broken?
"I can't upload my photos! The eBay Uploader is broken!" We've heard this statement more times than we can count. This is a common misconception taken my many people. They think that just because they can't load their photos, they blame eBay and say that they Uploaders are broken. This is simply not true. Over five million listings, many with multiple pictures, are listed daily on eBay. This equals literally millions of pictures successfully being uploaded daily. Chances that an individuals picture loading problem is due to an eBay problem are quite remote. For those with picture loading problems, the fact is that it will take a few clicks on your mouse to get up and running again. eBay's service will work, like it does for millions, if the member has their computer setup/configured correctly, and has downloaded the latest programs.

Uploader Updates
The Enhanced picture uploader for Internet Explorer in the Sell Your Item form and for eBay Picture Manager in My eBay was updated this past September to a new version. After the update was posted, if you use the Enhanced Uploader, then the next time you upload pictures to eBay you first will be prompted to download and install a new version of an ActiveX control software add-on from eBay. The new version, the first since May 2008, includes bug fixes and corrects a potential security vulnerability.

You must install the new version of ActiveX to continue using the Enhanced Uploader. Note that Internet Explorer security settings and third-party security software (e.g., from Symantec, McAfee, etc.) can interfere with the installation and use of ActiveX controls, and you will have to temporarily disable the software to download the new ActiveX control software.

Browser Limitations
You should also know that the eBay Enhanced Picture Uploader is only supported when using the Internet Explorer Web browser (version 6 or later) with Microsoft Windows (Windows 2000 or later). While it may appear to be available and operate on other browsers, such use is not supported by eBay. So for example, if you use FireFox or the AOL web browser, you will have difficulties, and you should switch over to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Installation
The download and installation time for the eBay Enhanced Uploader ActiveX control software is approximately ten minutes for a dial-up connection and one minute for a broadband connection. You will be prompted to download and install the ActiveX control software whenever the Enhanced tab in the Sell Your Item form’s Add Pictures window is selected and the software is either not already installed, or the installed version is out-of-date.

Internet Explorer settings and third-party ad blocker, pop-up blocker, and firewall software can interfere with the download, installation, and use of the Enhanced Uploader ActiveX control software. If you encounter problems please review the tips here.

Quick List
Does this stuff just sound to technical and just makes you more confused? We understand and have created a list of things that you can work through that will hopefully solve your problems. Remember, you must download the updated ActiveX control. The steps below are a troubleshooting guide if you can't download the ActiveX control.

Clear your web cache, temporary Internet files, and cookies. See this page for details.
Disable any security software such as Symantec or McAfee.
Adjust security settings on Internet Explorer as shown here.
Turn off the Internet Explorer pop-up blocker as shown here.
Temporarily disable your Web accelerator as explained here.
Adjust your firewall settings as described here.
Make sure that you are using a Windows operating system and the Internet Explorer web browser.
Defragment and run Disk CleanUp as shown in this tutorial.
Install all current updates available for Internet Explorer. You can click here to see updated versions of the browser.
Reboot all equipment in your Internet environment including modems, routers, and computers. Be sure to turn all devices off for 2-3 seconds before bringing them back online.
Use a different computer, and try the same process, to help to isolate an issue and determine if the problem is specific to a particular system or environment.

Still Have Trouble?
If the troubleshooting tips included here do not enable the Enhanced Uploader to work on your computer, then we recommend you try either the Standard or the Basic Picture Uploaders. When you are ready to add pictures to your listing, just click on the tab labeled Standard or Basic in the Add Pictures section of the Sell Your Item Form.

Enhanced Uploader Troubleshooting Guide

Nov 21, 2008 2:38 PM
I am NOT very computer savvy, so the troubleshooting guide was somewhat confusing for me. I want to continue to use the basic method of adding pictures to my listings. I've been listing items all day with no problem and then suddenly when I click: "Click to add pictures" I had a new page to pop up. When I clicked basic and tried to add my picture from that page, I couldn't do it. In the past, whenever I clicked to add a picture, I would have the small block that had 6 or so "picture" frames (in green) and I'd hit the first one for my free picture and "my pictures" from my computer would come down and I'd pick from there and everything was super smooth...no problem. now, I can't bring up a picture. How do I go back to the old way?

Enhanced Uploader Troubleshooting Guide

Nov 21, 2008 4:18 PM
I have been loading pictures on ebay for years. I've also listed and sold items since the "September upgrade" yet I can't load pictures in any fashion now. I have went through the suggested checklist twice and still get the same ebay error report that they are having problems with picture services. I have every possible firewall, pop blocker, spam ware, you name it turned off for the process and still no change. I am more than frustrated at this point. I have changed nothing on my computer since the last time I posted on ebay yet they say it's a problem on my end.
If it does not reslove by tomorrow I will no longer be a ebay user. As expensive as the fees are a person would think I could get better support, especially since nothing on my end has changed.

Enhanced Uploader Troubleshooting Guide

I am totally frustrated at this point. I've been listing items all day long with no problem, then suddenly I started getting this additional page for adding pictures and I can't get my pictures to load and neither can I go back to the old way, which I think was called Basic. The same thing happened to me last week and I just gave up for a day or two and then when I later tried to list something, everything worked just fine...no pop-up page when I tried to list my picture. Did it the same way I've done it for years. But, now it's starting all over again! I can't figure this out at all. I'm over the age of 12, so therefore I don't know alot about computers and even the "lingo" is foreign to me. But, I've been ebaying off and on since 2001 and I've never run into this kind of problem. It's been about 3 years or more since I've done any selling and I was a little surprised about some of the changes in general, but I've been selling again since early October and listing pictures with no problems until now. What more can we do? If you figure this out, please post your solution so I can hopefully learn from you. I tried "Live Chat" help today and that didn't even work. It showed that I was connected, but I never got a response to any of my questions!

Enhanced Uploader Troubleshooting Guide

fontaninifanatic,

I'm a little confused. In your first post on this thread, your description of the photo uploader you are using sounds like the Enhanced Uploader. In your second post, you say that you are using the Basic loader.

There is a great deal of difference between the two.

The Basic Uploader looks like this:
Link

The Enhanced Uploader looks like this:
Link

Which uploader are you using?
What web browser do you use? (Internet Explorer, FireFox, etc)
What operating system are you running? (Windows Xp, Vista, etc)

Enhanced Uploader Troubleshooting Guide

Last week I could use Enhanced Picture Services, no problem. For the last 2 days however, when I click to upload my pictures I get the Basic or Standard picture services page instead of the Enhanced one. As far as I know, nothing has changed on my computer. I've spent an hour or 2 restarting, clearing temporary files and cookies, checking active scripting is enabled etc, but no joy. I'm using Windows XP (service pack 3) and either Internet Explorer version 6 or BT Yahoo browser, both of which worked with the Enhanced Picture Services before. Any ideas?

Enhanced Uploader Troubleshooting Guide

OK, I've just spent another 5 hours trying to get my Enhance Picture Services page to reappear, to no avail. All I get is a choice between basic and standard, neither of which have the features I need to use. I thought I'd be clever and create a listing, schedule it for later and then go in and edit the listing and see if I could add the pictures at that stage. However, the Start immediately/ Schedule Start Time option was completely missing from the page! What is going on?

Also the eBay help pages say that to show the Enhanced Picture Services you should go to the Show/Hide Options link at the top right-hand corner of the Create Your Listing page and check the box for show eBay Enhance Picture Services. On my Create Your Listing page there is no Show/Hide Options link. Help!

Enhanced Uploader Troubleshooting Guide

Hmmm. Just tried Sell Your Item with a different computer and I still can't get the Enhanced Picture Services - just the standard or basic one. As I've used this computer before with no problem, it seems unlikely that both computers would suddenly develop a problem out of the blue. Any ideas, anyone?

Even more curious, when another ebayer logs in to their account on this computer, they are able to get the enhanced picture services. When I log in to my account on the same computer, I can't. Why?

Enhanced Uploader Troubleshooting Guide

Nov 24, 2008 7:56 AM
maultway,

If I understand correctly, you cannot see the Enhanced Uploader on your computer, therefore being unable to use it. However, when you use the same computer and log in with another eBay ID, you can see the Enhanced Uploader and are able to use it. If I have misunderstood, please let us know so we can provide the best answer for you in this situation. :)

If you are indeed using the same computer and the Enhanced Uploader works when you access it through another ID, then there is only two reasons for this.

My first question is that do you sign in on the other ID with the same web browser as with the other? It is important to note that the Enhanced Uploader uses a script that is only supported by the Internet Explorer web browser.

If you do use the same browser to sign in on both ID's, then it simply means that you need to enable the Enhanced Uploader by clicking the "Add/remove options" on the Sell Your Item Form. You mentioned that you had trouble finding the options, so please take a look at the below screen shot w/instructions.

To enable the Enhanced Uploader, click the “Add/remove options” link on the Create your listing page.

If you still have problems with the Enhanced Uploader, then I highly recommend that you edit your photos with a photo editor and use the Standard or Basic uploaders which are much more reliable and prone to work better in most computer environments.
