Milk Glass 101: "Milk Glass You Shouldn't Buy for Resale"

Jan 17, 2003 2:15 PM
Welcome to "Milk Glass You Shouldn't Buy for Resale". My name is Robin Delargy and I collect Milk Glass. In the course of my journey into this obsession, I have scoured thrift stores, garage sales and eBay (just about every day!) searching for the next ‘fix’ for my addiction. I have spent hours pouring over books and auctions trying to identify my ‘finds’ and driven the good people of this board to distraction with a constant barrage of Milk Glass, much of which was a bunch of junk.

Like any new collector I bought everything I could find, if it was cheap, but as I’ve learned more I've found myself becoming more discriminating and much more aware of what Milk Glass commands in the eBay marketplace. Although I am a Milk Glass buyer, not a seller (I sell in an unrelated category altogether) it is my aim to help others avoid some of the common ‘newbie’ mistakes when shopping for Milk Glass for resale.

Purchasing for your own pleasure is an entirely different matter! I buy the 'el cheapo' bud vases by the boatload to give away with roses from my garden. I buy inexpensive serving pieces for everyday use because it's no big deal if they get broken. All of these pieces have their purpose. *Disclaimer: Much of the following is strictly my opinion. I don’t claim to be an expert on anything.*

I am breaking this down into chapters and will post as I go. Please feel free to interject with corrections, comments or more examples!

OK, let's begin the parade!

Part One: Vases

The first example of what not to buy for resale is Anchor Hocking's 'Thousand Lines' - aka 'Stars & Bars' - bud vases. These little beauties come in 6" and 9" sizes and you can't give 'em away on eBay. I buy them for a quarter at thrift stores to give cut roses away in – there are usually a squillion of these at Goodwill on any given day. The glass is decent – nice and white – but they are far too common to have any resale value.

Save your money - you'll be tempted 'cause they are cheap and plentiful but they are not, repeat NOT a 'find'. :)

Here is a couple of charming bud vases. Florist trade stuff and if you buy them for resale, you'll be stuck with them.

This bud vase is one of the better Brody pieces and is often misidentified as a Fenton piece.

These are pretty, rather nicely made and do blend well with Fenton Hobnail, but they do not command Fenton prices.

This is one of the Anchor Hocking hobnail patterns. Useful and rather attractive, but not worth bothering with on eBay. This vase is of the watery ‘skim milk’ glass – inexpensively produced and originally intended for everyday use.

This a prime example of what NOT to buy. This is a Brody. Not all their stuff is this awful (I bought it as a joke 'cause it's so exquisitely ugly) but none of it is, um, respected. :)

Looks like a flocked turd, doesn’t it?

I don’t know who made this little planter, but they are all over eBay and nobody buys them, probably in part due to the fact that they are very heavy and expensive to ship.

This is actually a very good piece – Westmoreland Glass’s Footed Ivy Ball in the 'English Hobnail' pattern. Beautifully made and of exceptional quality glass. However, this piece was extensively reproduced (mine is an older, unmarked piece) and is therefore fairly common on eBay. It usually sells for around $10.00. It’s only worth listing if you can buy it cheap and present it really well. This is one of my favorites.

This wonderful little vase is a bit of a mystery, as nobody seems to know for certain who made it. Although not terribly common, I’ve seen it on eBay every so often and depending upon the marketing skills of the seller brings anywhere from 5 to 15 bucks on eBay. I love this one – it’s perfect for holding my family’s toothbrushes!

This concludes the Vase Parade. :)

Part 2: Compotes/Comports, Candies & Bowls

Exibit A is Anchor Hocking’s 'Vintage Grape' pattern, which I call 'Cheap A$$ Grape' - note the washed out 'skim milk' color.

This candy is missing its lid, but even with the lid it's still junk – unload these at your next garage sale. :)

This covered candy is another Anchor Hocking grape pattern - I think this one is 'Grape and Cable' but I tend to get them confused.

Despite the skim milk color, it's a rather pretty piece and I've seen these sell for around 10 bucks with its lid and in undamaged condition. I like this one. :)

This is a large footed centerpiece in the 'Colonial Diamond' pattern by Anchor Hocking. Pieces in this pattern are common on eBay but are rarely named - I know the name simply because this one came in its original box.

The bowl and stem were made seperately and then stuck together. This is cheap glass, but it does make a nice serving piece and I use it frequently. The cost to ship (it's heavy) coupled with the low quality makes this a poor resale investment.
