The BTY brand of Nimh batteries that are being sold on ebay by various sellers (most from Hong Kong) are not very good. The AA batteries are supposed to be 2500 mah but are in fact usually about 800 mah (or less) and are not useful in digital cameras (or anything else for that matter). I have purchased a total of 48 of the BTY 2500 batteries and so far have only 4 out of the 48 that are even usable. Those 4 are about 1500 mah (still nowhere near the advertised 2500 mah). If you are tempted to buy the BTY batteries I suggest that you charge and test them immediately upon receipt and return them at once if they are no good. It's a hassle to return them if you have to send them back to Hong Kong. Holliday 080806

I also purchased 12 of thse light green no-brand-name AA Nimh 2600mah and they were worse than the BTY. My tests have shown them to be ony 85mah to 100mah, nowhere near the 2600mah stamped on the batteries. My advice to all is to avoid all the AA and AAA Nimh that are coming from Hong Kong until this gets resolved. Holliday 080826 0057

same experience here. Bought 8 AAA-1000mah and 8 AA-2600mah. My Maha C9000 would not even charge the AAA's but I finally got my Lacrosse charger to test them. Average was around 150mah. The AA's would charge in the Maha, but only tested to 450mah. I just threw them all away. I've had good luck with some no-name green batteries, and the Juice nimh seem fine although not quite up to the ratings. Anyone tried the Tenergy brand batteries? I have a Tenergy charger which works well.

Same experience with BTY batteries here. They don't hold a charge for very long. Too much hassle to return, but it makes me skittish to deal with Hong Kong sellers. My experience with domestic vendors on ebay for rechargeables has been 100% positive. But my favorite two aren't around, at lest for now.

You need to read the thread pinned to the top of this board and then go to Trust & Safety to complain. Unless you're going to write a guide about how to complain effectively.

I think the topic of this board is REVIEWS & GUIDES.
This was a review of the products on ebay, namely AA and AAA batteries.

I also submitted this information to ebay's Trust & Safety and they told me that there was nothing they could do about it.

If you are having a problem with this "review" of bad AA and AAA batteries, your time would be best spent by writing a review of your own about these defective products.

These defective AA and AAA Nimh batteries have been on ebay since at least Sep 2007 and they are still there! How many more people need to be cheated before the community is aware of the problem?

This board is how to write a review or guide. Not a place to post your review. And, if you know the batteries are no good, then why would you keep buying them - especially if they have to be shipped from Hong Kong? The only solution I see to the problem is for ebay to make all the sellers in China sell to the Chinese ebay market.

However, the title of this board is confusing and it looks like many others also thought that this board was FOR "Reviews and Guides". The title should be changed to "About Reviews and Guides" or "How To Write Reviews and Guides" to avoid confusion. I think the category titles are really unclear for many of the topics on this board and should be changed. For example, how many people would think to look under a title like "Trust and Safety" for a review of a product? I think the original authors of the categories and titles meant well but should now go back through them and rename them to be more meaningful and appropriate. Hollidayp1 080924 2305

As I mentioned before, I didn't know that the batteries were no good before I purchased them. Why "especially if they have to be shipped from Hong Kong?" - Why Not? There are plenty of good (excellent) products coming out of Hong Kong and the shipping is usually not much more than (and maybe less than) similar products from stores in the USA. In fact, the total cost of the product including shipping from Hong Kong is usually cheaper than some USA products before shipping and taxes. batteries, made in china w/ no quality control.

the green ones are better, hold charges, only about 1 out of every 5
are defective. but the working ones are pretty good.

Hera, just another one confirming the crapy green batteries form HK. Few months ago I bought about to 24 batts. of two types, 2600mAh first, and 3800mAh! from
gdshop2shop and "DigiJeu" shops. They never behaved well at all, and when recharging the "expected" time, some of them just finished leaking!!
I have just bought a LaCrosse charger to confirm they are all about 200 to 500 mAh... so, waste of money and watch out!

I was also screwed with 32 "BTY" AA/AAA batteries, and I wrote a guide about them here. What can we do to inform the public and prevent such scams from running? Is 'reporting' items a valid action?

m_spasov, Very good ebay Guide. You might try adding a image or two or possibly three so that others can see the batteries. Here in Hawaii, there is one store that carries them. The clerks have mentioned to several buyers that if they have any problems to bring them back.

I just found this thread via Google. I purchased some BTY 2500 batteries and the first thing I noticed is they felt very lightweight. I just confirmed that they weigh approx 17.0g (some more, some less) -- I have some Energizer 2500 purchased at WalMart and those all weigh 29.0g.

Now I haven't really had a chance to test them much but they seem OK, they charged up fine on my cheap Rayovac charger. I'm sure in a month I'll be dropping them off at the hazardous waste disposal center.

Bought in the beginning of 2008 24 AA BTY batteries, first thing I noticed they were very light weight which I could compare with 2 Sanyo batteries I had in my dig-camera.
Unfortunately I have not been able to use the batteries to such an extent within short time so my possibility to leave the feedback to the seller was already due, damn it.
One reason is new rechargeable batteries need to be cycled at least 5 times before they start to reach full capacity, but I noticed they where of truly low capacity already from the beginning. Bought also 8 BTY AAA batteries, same thing.
All I can say they were truly lousy performers and in my wireless keyboard they last 2-3 weeks instead of 6 month.
Of those 24 AA batteries I have continuously used 8 batteries and 2 have failed, the don't charge and reach the correct voltage. I have bought some other stuff from Hong Kong so I know not everything is crap, but these batteries were truly CRAP! I'm truly disappointed, this is not a matter of bad quality but a true fraud!

I'll also confirm the bad news.

I bought some GP knock-offs and noticed immediate issues. This were a pale green, nearly the same color as the GP (Gold Peaks) The good news is the problems I was having lead me to purchase a La Crosse Technology BC-900 battery charger and tester.

The batteries were rated at 2650 MAH, but most came back after using the BC-900 in refresh mode to 200-300 MAH range, hardly 10% of rated capacity.

I also purchased some BTY batteries - 2500 MAH AAs and 1000 MAH AAAs. They are coming in at about 20% of rated capacity.

Then I found some old first generation NiMH batteries in a drawer. They were branded as Rayovac and Energizer. These batteries have endured some terrible chargers and excess abusive. Remarkably, most of them still come in with high MAH values.

Ebay should mark these ads with a warning to purchase with caution as they are not living up to rated standards.

I can't find the BTY website. I know they're a Japanese company. Any hints? Also, I placed this on yahoo answers:

Sorry to hear the problem. Would you please kindly try to charge the batteries by using 1A. Please try again. THIS IS THE RESPONCE I WAS SENT WHEN I CONTACTED SELLER. WHAT IS 1A? HAS ANY ONE HAD ANY LUCK WITH CHARGING AT 1A (DOES THIS MEAN 1 AMP CHARGE RATE ?) THESE ARE BY FAR THE WORST BATTERIES I HAVE EVER BOUGHT.THEY ARE NOT 2500ma AS STATED.I PUT THEM IN MY CAMERA AND WITHOUT EVEN TAKING A PICTURE BATTERY ARE DEAD.WONT EVEN HOLD A CHARGE. I SEE THAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THESE SAME BTY BATTERIES. -metroman716
