Estate Lab Glass Help
Jan 11, 2012 10:01 AM

Hello,

We here at Habitat for Humanity of East Jefferson County recently received some lab equipment and lab glass from an estate. Seems to be quite a bit and I'm not sure how to go about selling it/them. I took pictures of everything and uploaded them to Photobucket. Hopefully they can be seen here. Included is a Buchi Rotavapor <R> 18908. I'm not even sure what goes together or anything about them. Ace glass and Lab glass are included.

Also thermometers. The last of the pictures in the album are of full table with everything on it.

Some of it looks to be pretty dirty and there is even still some liquid in the taller rotavapor, should I try to clean anything or dump anything and if I do how do I make sure I am safe when I do it? As I do not know what he was using it for.

Thank you so much for the help, this board does provide good feedback!

I do not know if lab glass that is used and still dirty (with who knows what) has much of a market on ebay. The "dirt" could be harmless or it could be extremely poisonous - who knows? All types of chemicals are used in labs...I personally have used both cyanide and rocket fuel components - not very nice things for a non-professional to work with. Still have scars from rocket fuel components. Just mentioning because with no idea of a piece of lab glass provenance, resale is potentially dangerous. Not too mention much illicit use of this type of lab glass is encountered in the manufacture of illegal drugs. Selling to an unknown seller is - again - dangerous and not wise in my opinion.

The equipment like scales or other instruments can be researched quite easily by looking at ebays completed auctions. Old thermometers probably contain mercury - a hazardous metal. Not sure if they can even be shipped due to postal regulations?

If I were you I would look up the instruments on ebays completed auctions - and take all the lab glass to a local hazardous disposal site.

My two cents worth only...

I looked at your photos and you have a number of items which can be easily sold on eBay if properly cleaned, inspected, and described.

I have a relative who works at a Re-Sore in another state. If you still have questions the easiest thing would be to send me an email and we can set up a time for a telephone call during office hours. We can go through the photos, identify the items, and discuss how to inspect and clean.
