Don't think the police would show up, but the

Inspector General of the United States Postal Service might...

(Mercury and items containing mercury are always prohibited).

Also not allowed on eBay, either...

Items containing mercury such as thermometers and the following batteries:

Alkaline-manganese batteries

Mercuric oxide button batteries (button-shaped batteries typically used in vintage camera equipment)

Zinc-carbon batteries

The "River" has  / allows liquid mercury sales,

however, this appears to be limited to specific licensed

industrial / scientific materials-supply companies, and not individual sellers...

The easiest and safest way to get rid of liquid mercury is to sell it to a licenced metal recycler.  They know how to handle it and have legitimate channels for recycling the stuff.

If you don't have a metals recycler in your neighborhood you could go to youre dentist and see what he could do for you.  They use certified pure mercury for dental fillings and have approved methods to recycle of the left overs & etc. or they know of where to send it and which carrier (UPS, FedEx) to use.

One of my favorite toys as a kid was a maze that you had to roll a blob of mercury through by tilting. Just one of those fun things you can't buy any more.

All know the way, but few follow it.

You can sell on Ebay if the auction ends before the social Nazis get to you. But if the social Nazis see your post, they will come up with a reason to pull. Sell on Craigslist is much better and no fees.
