Hi...LOL, that's how it seems, isn't it?
I LOVE the fruitcake my husband makes (family recipe), we had it at our wedding (tradition that's changing now)...and you can actually eat it the same day. It's awesome!
I've had some fruitcake, however, that the makers rave about, nurture it for ages by dousing it with this and that, but it's...well.....awful!
It's definitely subjective....not all fruitcake is created equal!
Here's to fruitcake! Maybe the mystery question should be..why is it that some people actually like it?

not all fruitcake is created equal!
Correct. Commercially prepared fruitcake is crap. But there are places and monasteries that bake superb fruitcakes laced with potent liqueurs. Those are the best, albeit also being the most expensive.

I never did like it. My mom used to make it and leave it in the fruit cellar when I was a kid. Everyone who liked it, raved about her fruitcake. She used some pretty good liqueur...  Twelve Feathers

Why?
Because I believe it is similar to eating a brick.
Or cinderblock, for that matter.
I would only do it if I really needed fiber.....badly.
Plus, the candied fruit sticks to your teeth like cement.
The whole thing would be best used in construction.

Fruitcake could be healthy and fun too.
Carry it around.
Build your deltoids, biceps, triceps, forearms....depending on how you hold it.
You can use it as a curling stone, if you are into that kind of thing.

The Greeks used the fruitcake as the first discus and shotput (using different shaped pans when making the fruitcakes)in the first few Olympic games.

Medievel people used day-old fruitcakes in their catapults when storming the enemies castles.
The ones made with liquor were easy to set flame to, causing more damage to the castle than the day old fruitcakes.
