A little irritated by buyer and unsure how to respond.

Nov 2, 2009 5:55 AM
I recently sold an item under my seller ID. I had our shipping clerk expedite the shipping from UPS ground to USPS Priority to speed up shipping. I hadn't heard back from the buyer until last night when I received an email from her through ebay asking for a partial shipping refund. She stated in her email "I know why you changed this to priority mail. Even by doing that, you still gouged the shipping almost double. it only cost $7.90. eBay has very strict rules about ship gouging. They consider it a huge problem. When the shipping is so much higher than it really is, people won't come to ebay to shop.
I was hoping that when you saw this, you would refund the overage.
I usually just report a seller so outside the Shipping Guidelines, but I decided to write you 1st." The shipping charged on this item was $15.00. The amount that we were charged by USPS was $7.90 postange plus approx an additional $5.00 - $6.00 for bubble wrap at USPS, delivery confirmation and insurance on the item. Any additional money ($2.00 at the max) goes towards reimbursing my shipping clerk for the time spent sending this stuff out. I'm not sure how to take the buyers email as my shipping is plainly stated in the auction. This item also sold for only 25% of it's normal store selling price, so I am doubly irritated. How would you sellers respond to this (or would you?)

Refund her and stop charging such extortionate handling charges, especially to make up for a shortcoming in final sales value.

$1 - $1.20 is quite adequate.

for $5 I can buy about 40' of bubble wrap. What were you sending?

And yes, you are gouging on shipping.

At least you didn't try to figure in the cost of your big mac that you had for lunch under your shipping expenses.

And since I cannot see your selling id, could you do me a favor and place me on your blocked bidder list just in case I happen to find your auctions?

Not sure if this post was serious or not? $1.60 handling fee is exhoribitent? So I should refund the difference of .40? I don't know if you caught it, but we spent approx $13.40 at USPS shipping the item and we charged $15.00. That is $1.60 handling fee.

What the item sold for is of no consequence. You priced it and it sold.

Now, about your attempt to make up your perception of a profit on the above-mentioned item. Charging that kind of handling fee will get you in the end. Sell your items for a profit and use reasonable shipping charges. You will stop getting mail like that.

You are paying the absolute highest price for shipping and charging your buyer for it, so your buyer is understandably annoyed. If you continue to sell, consider:
1) Buy bubble wrap in bulk at uline or some other supplier.
2) Print postage online. It costs significantly less and the DC is free.
3) $1.60 is not exorbitant. $7.50 is - unless you are shipping breakables that you need to double box.

That said, your buyer did agree to the shipping cost when they purchased your item so they should not have tried to negotiate after the fact. They probably got sticker shock when they saw the actual cost of postage.

If your stated flat rate shipping was $15, then you owe her nothing. IMO you didn't make a "profit" on shipping...time and trouble easily ate up the small difference between what you charged and the amount that showed up as postage on the parcel.

And, yes, at least some of those posts were facetious. If the buyer has a problem with what it cost to ship, then she can always ding you on the DSR's, right?

I agree with the above posters that you need to lower your shipping rates by lowering your actual costs.

Having said that, can I be the devil's advocate here and mention that if you print your postage through Paypal, you will not only get a pretty good discount on shipping, but you can choose to print the label without the actual cost showing on the label. hmmmm...Do with that information what you will. ]:)

I charge actual cost on shipping myself, with aoccasional handling charge of less than $1 if the item needs to be double boxed or if it's a large, oddly shaped item. I refund(through Paypal now) if the shipping that a buyer pays is significantly more than the actual cost- like more than pocket change. The calculator prevents overcharges most of the time.

Double edge sword.

In defense of the buyer, the OP DID charge waaay too much, BUT the buyer AGREED to that cost when they bid. If USPS would not show actual cost on the label, then there would not have been a complaint.

Doesn't matter what you do.

Your buyer will slam your DSR on S&H charges.

If you give a refund you may get a "nice" note in the Feedback comments but your Star Rating will still get hammered.

If you don't give a refund you'll get it noted in your Feedback and in your Star rating.

Exactly! OP owes the buyer a refund.

Don't sell low priced items if those prices don't cover your expenses. Sounds like you should let your shipper go, find better inventory or get out of this business.

It's against Ebay policy to add in the cost of what you pay someone to get the package ready to ship to the shipping charges. That's a part of doing business. Add it to the cost of the item

And how much did you pay for bubble wrap???

Crazy

And back to the old question of "it's stated in the description" So what. It's stil exhorbitant and the buyer should be irritated.

In real numbers $7.90 actual cost plus (your number) $1.60 handling =$9.50.
