***Best Offer Expansion - Test***

Jun 6, 2005 4:54 PM
Hi everyone,

We're shortly going to announce an expansion to the Best Offer feature that we're going to be testing in certain categories, and I'm posting this on behalf of the product team. A copy of the announcement is below, as is more specific information about the categories that are going to be included in the test.

Have a good one!

==========

Test: Expansion of Best Offer

We are running a limited test that will expand the Best Offer feature. On Fixed Priced listings with Best Offer enabled, buyers can submit one offer price for the item that the seller can choose to accept or decline. However, during this test, buyers will be able to submit more than one offer per listing in certain subcategories within Cameras & Photo, Consumer Electronics, and Jewelry & Watches. Based on the results, we may make this a permanent expansion in the future.

Categories include:

Under Cameras & Photo:
-Digital
-Film Camera Lenses
-Monitors
-Portable Flash/Strobe
-Archival & Mounting Materials
-APS
-Other Manuals, Guides & Books

Under Consumer Electronics:
-Air Purifiers
-MP3 Players
-Multi-Disc DVD Players
-TV/DVD/VCR Combos
-Single-Disc DVD Players
-Reel-to-Reel Tape Recorders
-Caller ID Boxes

Under Jewelry & Watches:
-Diamond
-Silver (w/o Stone)
-Strands/Strings
-Rhinestone
-Metals
-Lampwork, Crystal & Glass

Why not allow Multiple Best Offers all the time in all categories?
Thanks

I think that it should be allowed on everything. People should be able to make more than one offer.

Thanks,

Allowing more than one offer would result in an IMMEDIATE increase in revenues, both for Ebay and the sellers.....
How about offer>counteroffer>offer>finalcounteroffer??

I think you should allow Best Offers in EVERY category Ebay. Also, I think counter-offers should be highly considered. What I don't think should be allowed is after a listing has ended for people to see the Best Offers submitted. If you would do counter-offers sales would not only increase for you Ebay for for us Sellers and I quite certain some of us sellers would like to see our sales increase.

I have to agree with musiciansadvocate -- I don't think after a listing has ended for people to see the best offers submitted

To maintain the transparency and vibrance of the marketplace ending prices cannot be withheld from the userbase.

I defiantly think more then one offer should be allowed in ALL categories.. I like the idea that someone else posted - offer>counter offer> final counter offer - Excellent idea! EXPAND THIS IDEA TO ALL CATEGORIES!!

I am in agreement - I think you should allow Best Offers in EVERY category on Ebay. Counter-Offers should be considered to allow more sales to take place. I certainly applaud any efforts along these lines to make eBay more Seller Friendly.

EXPAND THIS IDEA TO ALL CATEGORIES!!

I believe the limited categories are for the test only. If they get good results they will expand to all categories.

I think as well that this option should not be limited to fixed price formats but also avaiable in regular online auctions. We see daily that items are ended to highest bidder and you know as well as others know that ebay is not getting there entire cut of final value fee's. Just my thought of it.

FOR SALE BY OWNER: Complete set of Encyclopedia Britannica. 45 volumes. Excellent condition. $1,000 or best offer. No longer needed, got married last month, Husband knows everything.

Best offers should not be limited to one bid. The first best offer is usually a ridiculous low ball, so I've stopped using it, rather than offend customers with a final refusal. Customers have complained at the limit and told us they would have rebid if they could.

The offers should never be posted. That would be reason enough not to use it because it undermines the price objective when an unsold item is relisted.

agree agree agree no one should know what the buy it now price paid was it creates a flood of low bids and it destroys sales just because i want to get rid of one item doesnt mean i want to get rid of all at a low price id like to see if other sellers feel the same .. also when are sellers goin to be protected like the buyers are .....

Zigmund, it would be helpful to know eBay's rationale for limiting Best Offers to one per user per listing in the first place.
