Griff says payments to be AUTOMATICALLY DEDUCTED from buyer's accounts

Jan 8, 2009 11:30 AM
According to an article put out by Auctiva, Ebay will actually automatically take auction payments from winning buyers.

"Further, he (Griff) says that in the coming year, eBay will work to eliminate the unpaid items problem that has plagued the lives of eBay sellers. "We're working on eliminating it completely," he notes. "We are determined to do this."

All efforts, he promises, are focused on a smooth, consistent, and safe transaction model that will virtually eliminate unpaid items. For fixed-price listings, this will include a shopping cart checkout. For the auction format, this will mean money will be automatically taken from the highest bidder's account or credit card and put into the seller's account."

(emphasis added)

I had heard of the shopping cart, but not the automatic withdrawal. I love it - betting some of those "bid on everything and pick what you like" shoppers will be pretty unhappy, though.

Great...until the buyer does a CC chargeback :_|

Interesting. Buyers and sellers will have a fit combining auction wins but that's a small negative to me. Overall, I really like this a lot.

Will they be putting holds on funds when the bid is placed and not releasing until after auction end?

and when the cards decline, then what? will they wait to charge FVFs until funds clear, automate FVF refunds?

How are we going to deal with refunds for combined shipping discounts?

Mess in the making.

Stupid, stupid, stupid idea. Buyers will NOT like it at all. I know of a lot of eBayers who like to bid on multiple items to get combined shipping. That won't work in this scenario--unless the seller EATS a .30 transaction fee for each seperate Paypal payment and refunds overages on their own.

I for one was never "plagued" by unpaid items.

More control taken away from sellers and buyers. eBay owns nothing but controls everything. Total carp from an eBay toady.

as a buyer I don't like this.

for one you will not get a chance to pay with a credit card should you have a balance. and i'd be wiling to bet they will take it from your bank account before using your credit card since as we all know, ePal is evil.

I don't want to have to remember if I have any auctions ending as a buyer when I am standing in line at the grocery store getting ready to pay with my Paypal debit card.

I have so few unpaid items it is a non issue for me. I'll tell you one thing though, I'd rether have an unpaid item than a return.

Don't forget, Paypal is extending you a loan when it says you actually have the money and can ship. This loan can be retracted if the buyer's payment actually falls through.

This will also deep six any buyers who don't have an CC or bank account linked with ebay.

It also means that those who use auctions as advertising to their store or fixed price items will not be able to combine them on one invoice.

.30 per transaction may not seem like a lot, but when your business model thrives on multiple item purchases, it can hit hard into your bottom line.

Paypal Fee for 15 books (a combination of winning auctions and FP) invoiced as one transaction is $.30 +2.9%

15 books under the new plan could result in fees of $4.50 +2.9%

It adds up for those who sell lower priced items or those who depend on multiple item purchases.

This will limit buyers to those that use PayPal and have a current credit card on file with PayPal.

Once again, less buyers?

eBay already has the system they need for this. It is called eBay Express. Buyers loved it.
