OMG! Ebay's gonna show average prices on my listings!!!

Oct 31, 2006 3:56 PM

O M G!

This is supposed to be an improvement on the bidding/buying
process...

It's from Evan Liang on the General Announcement page...

Average Selling Price for Items with Pre-Filled Item
Information.
We'll display the average selling price
for that item when the buyer’s bid is significantly below the average. This will
only be included on items where the seller’s listing was created using
Pre-Filled Item Information. (Items listed with the same Pre-Filled Item
Information are close or identical products and can be compared to determine a
reasonably accurate average price.)

I don't know about you... but when I'm selling I hope to get
as much as I can. I don't want anything limiting the bidding process.

For example:  I'm bidding on a book or cd, I see the
average price is $10.00... how much more than that will I be willing to bid
until I search for a different one. If I would bid more at all.  Isn't this
price fixing?!?  Or am I being too paranoid.

Thank god its only for items with pre-filled item
information... but none-the-less, even if you don't use that feature others
will... and limit the bidding on your item.

THIS IS REALLY RETARDED!

Ebay's gonna show average prices on my listings!!!

It's not just you. They're going to show them on other people's listings, too.

The way I read it the average price thing will only show for a real low bid.

We'll display the average selling price
for that item when the buyer’s bid is significantly below the average

The other listings are closed listings that are used for the average and I don't see where it said anything about showing them in your running auction.

Dear Buyer.
We see that the seller has started his auction at .99 for an item that some sellers have gotten as much as $200.00.
However, the average price is only $6.00 as the one that sold for $200.00 was perfect, brand new, had a full 1year guarantee, came with $100. worth of free accessories by a seller with perfect feedback.
The last 10 sold for less than $3.00 as they were run over by a truck, 10 years old, no accessories, missing parts and by a seller with 700 negatives.
Please do not bid more than $6.00.
Thank you,
Ebay

So list it at $9.99 and there will not be any average price showing.

If you list at $0.01 the the average will show until about $5.00 and will disappear?

Pre-filled item information-What exactly is that?

LOL You got that right.
and don't forget a couple of them sold for 99 cents because they were newbie sellers who 'thought' eBay 'told' them to start it at 99 cents!

When I list books, and most of mine are HC's in VERY good condition, or 1st ed's in just good or better (or I don't list them) I get that 'avg price this sold for' garbage. Which includes paperbacks, book club editions, missing dustjackets, torn pages, ect.
and then there's the 'avg' shipping of around $3 that my 3lb HC book won't possibly ship for. I charge $1.50 Handling (and that's per package, not per book).

Books CD's DVD's and a few other things have a pre-filed auction info page if you wish to use it.

Best thing is don't use it then.

You gotta check out the Announcements Board...

Here's what Evan says:

I'll bet... from buyers who don't want to spend too much.

I guess I should've said our auctions. (To be very honest, I don't use
pre-filled info... but I think this is ridiculous)

It's about showing an average price for many items in different conditions. I
think this is nuts!

I start the bulk of my auctions @ 99 cents... that way low bidders get an email
that they have been outbid. I know the market on my items, and what they will
bring... hopefully my presentation will bring more than the highest prices...
but given an average ... people will tend to look elsewhere when they 'deem' the
price is too high.

Many categories come with a "Pre-Filled Item" section where you can fill in
the UPC code and it will give stock descriptions. It's used mostly in
entertainment and literal media, but Ebay is expanding on that.

It is necessary for e-bay to show they are in total control of our minds and bodies.

If they continue to pile insult on injury and we just take it, they will have to find even more ways to demean us.

When they said they were just a venue and not responsible for any fraud, we said, okay, that makes sense.

When they said, we're raising listing fees, we said, well, even Meg Whitman has to make money -- no problem.

When they advertised stores and then did their best to weed out and close down stores, we said, that makes sense.

When they declared that we would have a new listing form so complicated that it bogs the minds of most average people, we said, we just have to find ways to work around it.

Some of us even said the rest of us were irrational to feel that there was a serious control issue here.

So now, we have come to a time when they will tell us how much to sell our items for -- and, because we didn't speak up for the other inequities, who will speak for us now?

Even more to the point, who will listen to us, since we have caved in on so many of e-bay's totally self-serving, ruthless decisions.....

It appears that eBay wants to be kMart... and offer everything at it's lowest possible price. Unfortunately, it will do so at the cost of many sellers.
I watch people's feedback a lot and there seems to be a lot of Seller's who are now unregistered.
This can only hurt the diversity that once was eBay... it no longer wishes to be known as the world's largest garage sale, it would rather go the route of Amazon, Yahoo, the big O etc.
Good Luck to you all!
