New Return Policies and side-effects
Apr 25, 2012 01:22 PM

Hello everybody! I am a vintage jewelry dealer and have been buying and selling on Ebay for many years now. I am a ... glorified (!) Power Seller and a Top Rated Seller and I have 100% feedback and so on and so forth. But in the last two or three months, I have noticed that I started having a larger number of returns - only today I received a necklace back in the mail and the buyer didn't even have the courtesy to let me know she was returning it and give me a reason. Has anybody out there noticed the same trernd? Let me say that I have switched to the 14-day return policy (as if I really had any other option) from my previous 3-day one when we first were encouraged to so do but I have to say that the returns I have had to deal with are immediate. Nobody held on to a piece only to decide that something was wrong with it or they didn't like it after having kept it for 2 weeks.

Is it just a series of really bad coincidences or could it be related to the mandatory changes in return policy? Are we all becoming Wal-Marts?

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts,

We are become Stepford Sellers... Whatever Ebay Wants - Ebay Gets.  It's imployable and disgusting business practice.  They don't even have to invest in our companies and they are telling us how to run it.  The new return policy will ruin many businesses and gives the buyer yet another avenue to get what they want.  Use an item for two weeks and return it.  Wear it for two weeks and return it.  Then you try and resale a used item then as new... Guess what, you'll get it back again and a negative tagged on with it.  So tired of it all.  So So tired.

I used to sell antique fine bone china and other similar very breakable items on ebay. NO MORE !

I still sell adult collectibles and people have grandchildren..........

Ebay only wants to deal with corporatre accounts now. They forgot where they came from.

I hope they fail.

I sell motorcycle related products for a Harley Davidson dealer.  This includes helmets, clothing, and gloves, as well as mechanical components for their bikes.

I'm careful with which items I accept returns on.  On clothing I usually do not, mostly for the reasons stated by the others here that people will wear the itme then send it back.

I do accept returns on helmets and some clothing where the size indicated may have some variance to it.  These items genuinely might not fit even though the size is right.  Helmets for example may be the right size but may not fit the customers head shape.

I have in my policy that the item must be in the same condition as it was shipped AND there is a 20% re-stocking fee.

Here is my return policy:

  • Returns or Exchanges MUST be made within 14 days of purchase and only after contacting Pikes Peak Harley Davidson for authorization.
  • All Returns, not exchanges, are charged a 20% restocking fee.
  • All items exchanged must be in the same condition in which they were received and returned in the original packaging.
  • All Shipping charges are non-refundable.
  • All Merchandise Must Be Received within 14 Days from the date in which PPHD was contacted.

I've had problems even with this policy though.  One customer received the item in California then shipped it on to Singapore.  He then claimed the item was not as described (it was scratched).  He refused to ship it back to me because of the high shipping costs, demanded a FULL refund, AND said if I did not comply that he would give me negative feedback.

For the most part though my customers have been fine and when there have been problems we've been able to work it out to our mutual satisfaction.

I have been on E-Bay since 1999.  Until last week, I have never had an item returned and only one buer that ever didn't pay.

This past week, I had a buyer do a Buy It Now... and in 5 minutes, he wrote to cancel the sale... changed his mind.  One other buyer has made a purchase 6 days ago now and has not paid. ?????  Trend??? As you ask... I don't know.

It seems to me that ever since E-bay made the last changes that  buyers are certainly taking longer to pay...and now as you say, they seem to be canceling sales & etc. Still haven't had a return but I'm sick of the entire E-Bay mess!!!!

I sincerely think it is all the un-needed bull&$#^$ changes that E-bay is making. I have noticed a lot of old sellers leaving and I am about to join them!

Here is my return policy....

Until this month... since 1999, I have always accepted returns for any reason.... Never had one but that was the stated policy.

AS OF THIS MONTH AND E-BAY TRYING TO SHOVE SOMETHING ELSE DOWN MY THROAT... X-(

NO RETURNS!  Screw'em!  Sales on E-bay have gotten so bad that it can't hurt!!! :-p  I simply refuse to be pushed any further. Enough Is Enough!

I sell a lot of items that are heavy. I will not give free return shipping because of the bad elements. As for one day shipping I am a one man small business will not do that either.

My guess is ebay is on a high because there stock price jumped from around 26 a share to over 40 a share in the last year.  I believe this is from a huge increase in revenue from charging us final value fee on shipping. I also believe I will get one of those mail flyers about a class action suit they will eventually lose for that change.  In about 5 years it will come lol.

Yup I sold a 100 pound item charge exsact cost and payed ebay the same as the finale value fee on item for shipping.  Item went to Oregon from Mass.  So I lost money on shipping and will continue to do so unless I pass it on.

I am lucky because I have a good full time job. I feel bad for folks who make most of there living on this site.

I too am suffering since the forced us into 14 day "cash or exchange"- this week alone I have had a 25% return rate. It's increased horribly since the kids have gotten out of school. My return rate used to be 5%- this really hurts, we moved to free shipping since everyone that pays shipping thinks they got hosed somehow- they think they're grading the post office, but they just were killing us on low DSR's on ship time and charges. This stinks.

Hi,

The 14 day returns have been a disaster for me. One buyer told me she has been watching her purchased item for 10 days and mine was too expensive.

I think this is nothing more than the fact E-Bay has stacked the deck against us sellers to the point buyers KNOW they can screw a seller and just walk off!

NO ONE should need 14 days to decide to keep an item or not. NO ONE... but a *%$&%^%*!!!!  THIEF! And E-bay supports this knowingly and whole heartedly!

A buyer can buy your item, wear it to three parties...show it off... and then feed it to you!!

I have been on ebay since 1999..... I ALWAYS had the return policy that if you don't want it...you don't own it! I NEVER had a return. Then, when ebay started kissing the buyers hind side MORE THAN EVER.... I made sure my images were good, showed the item well...and so does the description... and I went 100% NO RETURNS!  can't tell it has hurt sales at all.... and at least I have half a leg to stand on when ebay tries to let a buyer screw me!

E-bay got paid when you sold the item...and when you listed it...they don't give a tinkers dang WHAT the buyer does to you now.  THE DECK IS STACKED AGAINST SELLERS! X-(
