Just purchased HUGE stamp collection need help, advice many early good stam

I just purchased a huge collection of stamps and I know very little just enough to be dangerous.  There is an envelope containing at least 50 1851 grey washington stamps!  just to give you an idea.  A few weeks prior at this garage sale I purchased the postcard collection of over 5000 cards collected by one person (the  deceased mother) they started with postal cards in 1870 and went right up to 1970.  I went to the same garage sale this weekend and they had the deceased fathers stamp collect.  He started collecting them in 1935.  There is a Paragon stamp album that is at least half full and 15 shoe boxes of corespondence starting in 1850's through the 1960's.  The gentleman was a minister and college professor and aparently an avid stamp collector.  Their parents and they themselves were missionaries and were responsible for founding colleges all over the world.  There are large volumes of correspondence from places like China, South America, Hawaii etc.

I have been able to find some of the stamps for sale on here for outrageous prices but I am unsure of how to list and grade them.  I know stamp collectors are very particular as to condition and I am unsure of teminology and how to grade them.  Any advice or help will be much appreciated.

Can you maybe take a few photos and post them to the board, especially some of the early china covers ?

ANTIQ-------You will need about three different experts to sort and help you out with your find .First someone who knows postcards ,then someone who knows postal history and cancelations on those postcards .Also have someone sit with you ,to give a estimate on the stamp collection .Those covers from or to overseas locations could have value also .

To get any value from just a few picture here are a waste of time, its better to spend time taking them to more experience dealers ,only advice I have is take them to three or more people to get a fair valuation and then decide whats best.

antiguyou,

show some scans of the covers from the Missionaries, front & back, also some scans of what you consider better stamps.

If you cannot show photos or scans, a description of the covers will do mentioning the markings and the dates. That will give some idea of what they are.

That will give an idea of what the value is and the method of disposing of them,

Please, as David has advised, show some here first before going to dealers. No matter how experienced they are, there are always those willing to be less than honest should you have something worthwhile, especially if they know that you are less than sure of what you have. You have a wealth of knowledge on this board and will get a much quicker ( and cheaper ) valuation of what you have.

Hi....

Show large clear pictures of BOTH SIDES and add dates to your listing titles.

antiqu......settle yourself down and take your time....collections like this can take  months to sort through and identify....buy a couple books and learn a few things....its fun.....i agree with others-stay away from dealers for now....they'll take advantage.....i buy estates for a living, break them down, and auction contents.....stamps and canadian coins were two of the most fun items i've researched.

cannot wait to see some scans.good luck.

Hello.  I'm sure such an acquisition is a lot of fun to go through.  Be certain to separate out any postcards or envelopes that have any kind of charity seal that is tied (postmarked).  The minimum catalog value for a tied U.S. Christmas seal (if non-philatelic use) is $8, compared to 25 cents minimum for a U.S. stamp.  The high price for them is $1,500.  For Easter seals, the current range is $10 to $250.  If the seal is not postmarked, it has almost no value, unless it is a very rare seal in and of itself, and philatelic uses of seals always have lower values. Recently, there have been some incredible prices achieved in auctions.  Last November a tied 1907 Type 1 seal sold for $2,500 and in March a cover with both the Types 1 and 2 seals tied together sold for nearly $6,000.  The Scott Catalogue is not a good source for U.S. Christmas seal information, because it is very incomplete, omitting the recent years and several rare seals.  Use Green's catalog for a complete listing of U.S. Christmas seals, and Mosbaugh's Easter Seals Catalogue for them.

I am a full-time philatelic consultant with over 40 years of experience with US and foreign stamps and postal history. I have had extremely broad exposure to every type of stamp and cover thanks to my having worked as an auction lot describer at major auction houses in the US.

Most of my clients are like those you encountered at that garage sale, i.e., non-collecting heirs.

I can provide you with guidance and recommendations for intelligently selling the items from this collection.

Ebay is NOT the best venue for everything philatelic, especially not for better items due to the lack of adequate market exposure, to cite one of several reasons.

If you are interested in my assistance, please feel free to contact me.
