Need help with color identification

I am trying to discern "brown" from "reddish brown". Since those are the colors Scott uses, I was wondering if any collector might be able to give a a Scott number to any common US stamp(s) that might have the color "reddish brown". It is the reddish brown I am looking for.

See South Africa Scott 40 and 41  where it places greater value on the reddish brown #40

Yet in SG the greater value is placed on the brown SG 46 and 46c refers to "Brown (shades)".

Unfortunately what you will find is that the colors Scott uses are not consistent from country to country, or even from set to set within the country. Color names are provided by whomever writes them up first and seldom changed thereafter even when the colors obviously don't match other examples with that color. ?:|

Thanks, billsey that's just what I didn't want to read. groan :_|  You sure put it succintly.

cobbie10 I have the same SG stamp colour key. But, since it was Scott describing the colors I thought it best, since Scott doesn't provide a color chart (that I know of) to find a common stamp(s) that Scott described as reddish brown.

With billsey's comment in mind even that might not be reliable. I guess I'll put it into the "to do" (someday) pile, for now.

Thank you both..........

Peetah

This site also gives pretty good images as to shades, especially on early stamps from the US. It may be helpful as to where Scott references their different shades.

Peetah,

if you check the Gibbons notes about the 4d. it says after s.g. 49b that

s.g. 46   Brown,  The Scroll is in solid colour

s.g. 46c. Brown (shades) The Scroll is in white with a crooked line running through it.

p.s. unless the item is in a horizontal bilingual pair, they are valued at 20% to 35%. I don't know if Scott's mentions it.

In my 2003 Scott the reddish brown (1932) pair catalogs for $150 * and $125 o with no specified bump for **. Singles are $15 and $10. The brown pair (1936) catalogs for $4.00 and $3.50 with singles at $0.40 and $0.20. So singles are hit even more than you suggest... At least in Scott. :)

Scott has notes for the set. They state: 4p. On Nos. 40-41 the background in upper corners is solid. On No. 28 it consists of of horizontal and vertical lines. No. 41 has pretzel-shaped scroll endings at bottom. On No. 40 these scroll endings enclose a solid mass of color.

It looks to me like Paul showed what could be all three types, although I didn't see a real color difference between #40 and #41.
