Turn the flash off and see if you have a Macro setting  ( usually denoted by a Flower icon on most modern cameras ). This allows you to have the camera in fairly close to the object where it will still focus well.

The best way to produce an image of a stamp is not to use a camera at all, but a flatbed scanner. If you have many stamps to sell (or covers, postcards or similar small paper items) it could be a good investment.

In addition to the correct advice already given.  If you do not have to many options then remove the stamps from the mounts.

I've seen a lot of auctions that I would not bid on because of the flash glare from the mounts..

* Use a scanner - they are not very expensive

If you don't have a scanner...

* Turn off the flash - photograph in bright even light. Sunlight is good.

* Use the macro setting on your camera if you have one.

* Use postprocessing software to crop and adjust contrast and brightness - but don't do any other retouching :)

* Make sure your camera is steady - a tripod that lets you rotate it to point down is bet (but at that poing a scanner would be cheaper) but just resting the camera against a solid object will help.

* I've found Fuji cameras have the best macro performance.

All know the way, but few follow it.
