Hi there in the U.S of A :)

I am a UK insomniac and am wondering if any of you good folk

have a working knowledge of old UK stamps as i am quite knowledgeable in this field however, i am having a brain meltdown regarding penny reds and wonder if any of you funny talkers would be willing and able to help- it relates to plate numbers (or not) as the case may be as Stanley Gibbons is not helpful * shakes fist*

If anyone is awake where you are i shall hit refresh button for a while in anticipation of your help and arrange for you to win the Olympics should you be able to advise me :^O

Effie, this board's attached to the US site but people from all over call in here. I'm the UK, for a start. Penny Reds not my thing though ... Gibbons not the last word on plate numbers?

Why not just post the question, and drop back from time to time. Sooner or later someone will give you an answer - lots of knowledge here.

damsel,

locate a copy of Gibbons, Great Britain, Queen Victoria Specialised. That should give you enough initial information that you need. There are plenty of other specialised books on the subject but they are really only needed by those who specialise in GB 1d. Reds,

Stanley Gibbons Ltd, Specialised Stamp Catalogue Volume 1: Queen Victoria (8th ed. 1985) p. 207.

All know the way, but few follow it.

Hi there, I'm a dealer in California, and I have found like the collector previously said that the Stanley Gibbons specialized catalog of the Victorian era is of great help.  Also, seeing the plate #'s is difficult so I purchade from Lighthouse (a German stamp album company) their DIGITAL MICROSCOPE CAMERA.  I found that it enlarges the stamp so you can see everything clearly, unless the cancel covers what you are looking for of course.  Also, get the additional pedistal tower stand.  The flimsey origional equipment stand is worthless.    Stampman.ca

There are lots of those USB microscopes available on eBay, most of them quite a bit cheaper than going the route of buying from a collector specific marketplace. I recently bought a new one (the old only did 640x480, the new 1600x1200 or so) for less than $25 including shipping. I agree about the stand, it's tought to get a clear focus if the stand isn't fairly substantial.
