Required Tracking for 90% of US Shipments to keep Top Rated Status

I am not very familiar with how other stamp dealers do their shipping, but we ship most of our items in #10 envelopes and 99.999% of them get there. With no tracking number. Cost about 50c when you include envelope and packaging. (and we give most US buyers free shipping) With this change the cost will be $1.65 +$1 for large envelopes and packaging.
This new policy is really going to effect my business and I believe the "stamp" catagory as a whole. Many if not most of our customers prefer to receive stamps on their covers, not labels. So now eBay wants us to not use stamps, use their labels and add a huge cost to shipping. EBay's response is add it into the item.... I start almost all my auctions at a penny, so now what, start them all at $.99 .
If we do not provide tracking we will loose our top rated seller status. Doesn't matter that we excel in all the other requirements and have spent years maintaining excellent standards.
Is this going to effect any other stamp dealers out there?
I think we need to band together and try to have our catagory excluded from the tracking requirement based on the special mailing circumstances we have.
Please send emails / call and get on the Spring update discussion boards. Hopefully we will be able to get the "stamp" catagory excluded from this change.
Thanks for reading.

Stamp sellers, don't feel like "The Lone Ranger" about this!
I sell in Collectables-military (ie patches) and Art-Prints! My prints shouldn't be affected much at all but the patches will be. Especially with single purchases except for the premium stuff! Multiple purchases not so much. Howwever most of my sales are one or two at a time!
I still remember how eBay was "encouraging" use to use free shipping!
Post card dealers will feel the hit also!
BOHICA!
Funny thing about this is that if the feds, state or local government or even a private, low life, scum sucking,, ambulance chasing lawyer sends you a legal document by First-Class Mail the legal presumption is that the letter has been delivered! (Our postal system really is very good!) If they send it registered and you ignore the notice left by the letter carrier then it is not delivered!
Good luck to all!

I have done the same... Increased my free shipping requirement to $30 combined and sent a mass mailing to about 1600 people. We are all adapting which from our business standpoint is good. But ultimately, feebay gets a big boost in profits. Not only from us loosing our 20% discounts, but also from the increase postage we are charging. GRRRR.
On a side note. Delcampe is going really well for us. We have about 1100 items listed and we have had over 1000 sales since mid Feb. We are going to start trying auctions in the next couple of weeks. It definitely takes some work getting that many items listed, but it is paying off. The more you have listed the more exposure you have.
Our website also came online about 2 weeks ago. oquiststamps dot com. It has pages that go directly to Delcampe and eBay. Slowly getting our customers to take a look at the new place.

The USPS is testing First-Class Mail tracking stickers in 50 po's in the metro Washington DC area. I think they cost $0.29 ea. If they decided to adopt them all over the US that might really help out. Don't know how long the test will be. There is another post about this below. Scroll down.

If you go back a page or 2 you will see discussion on these tracers. I live in Maryland and have tested them. They would probably work, but for the volume we do just inputting the numbers into eBay is a time consumming job. They do not make it easy. Especially for mulitple item winners. You have to put the number in for every item. And on top of that, if you check the status a couple days later, eBay system changes the ship date to when you checked the status. Happened to me on everyone I checked. So I have decided not worth it.... Though I will use them on higher valued items for peace of mind / insurance tracking.

Doc -
Two questions - firstly if you check the status on a regular delivery confirmation item or express mail / registered mail item, does the system also change the date on that one ?
Secondly, why do need to go and check the status ? Once you've entered as shipped you've done your part. The only reason to go back and look would be if the buyer queried as to where their package was. Even then, if you wanted to check you could go to USPS.com and do a trace there.

Cobbie,
Yes, it did occur on a few of the labels that I had printed through eBay. I tested a couple of those when I noticed it was changing on the tracers.
I noticed this issue when I was getting packages ready for shipping. I sort by ship date. So when I went to that page and saw a couple of them on top that I knew I had shipped 3 days earlier I was curious. I had not checked them. (the buyer must have) So I tested a couple others that I had entered, and sure enough, as soon as I checked them the shipping date changed. And it seems that occassionally one will show up on the top of the list again with shipping date changed. So I can only assume it is the buyer checking the tracking. I usually do check at the USPS. And was doing so, so that I could see how they were tracking.
But this is part of the reason I am done trying. If eBay has this many clitches and even if you enter the tracking the ship date can be changed by someone checking the tracking it will then screw up your numbers. To many variables to keep up with. Just cant see it worth the extra time that has to be devoted to it. Too many people are complaining that the system is not tracking their numbers correctly. So ultimately ebay's Top rated seller badge will be disappearing for many sellers. Which will make them lots of money. Maybe time to invest in eBay stock to recoup the lost discount. lol.

One other side note. I am testing them on International shipments. I thought it would show as leaving the country... maybe it will be picked up by the foreign tracking system.....
So far they post 2 US processig centers. Maybe handy for International tracking.. Will keep you posted.

I 100% agree... Matter of fact if a dealer sends me stamps that I have bought using a lable and not stamps I will NO LONGER BUY FROM THAT PERSON. I'm a collector and I collect STAMPS not lables.
Thank-You

So how will you be keeping your TRS status in tact ? Will you be going to the post office for every single shipment and adding DC, shipping each item by Parcel post at the increased shipping cost , or will you forfeit your TRS and carry on shipping as you do now ?
Or do you actually go against what you preach and print your labels on line, receiving your postage discount for each shipment ?

Am I the only person here who couldn't care less whether an item I buy is sent in the mail to me with a label on rather than a stamp? I'm buying the stamps IN the envelope (which I do want), not those on the outside (which I don't want). The seller can send them to me paid any way they choose. Likewise, when selling, I feel under no obligation at all to put stamps on the envelope. Making a fetish of this seems childish to me. Postal history is postal history, and philatelic mail is something else.

You may not care one way or the other whether you get labels or stamps. Most of my customers do. I even have some that ask for specific topics for the stamps on the envelope.
But this is not only what this is about. It is also about the fact that eBay is creating a "1 size fits all " policy that is not the case. They are telling me to be considered "top" I have to conform to a policy that goes against what most my customers want. Personally, I rather remain "Top" in the eyes of my customers than in"ebays" as my customers are the ones that contribute to my business.
There are a few arguments regarding this change, not just the stamp issue.
1- many of our customers want stamps on their envelopes not labels. But eBay tells me I am not a top seller if I give my customer what they want (stamps) As another person stated earlier, he will not buy from a seller again if they use labels to ship.
2 - I can purchase Mint US pastage at a discount. Therefore, my shipping cost can actually be reduced by using stamps.
3 - the cost involved going from stamps on an envelope to labels on a 1st class package is huge. (50c stamp / envelope to $2+ for label, delivery confirmation and bubble envelope). That is a 400% increase, that buyers don't want to pay for and sellers cannot just absorb it. You cannot just put a Delivery Conf. on a #10 envelope. YOu must make it a 1st class pkge which involves large envelopes at least 1/4 in thick.
3 - the green aspect.... lets take a small 1inch square piece of paper and instead of mailing in a smail envelope, put it into an envelope that is 50times the size of the item and then print lables to ship.
Ultimately done so eBay can thin out their Top Rated Sellers and take more money from the sellers. Sure they say they have lowered the monetary requirements to acheive TRS, but they have made the policies so difficult, that more will fall from it then be added to it.
So from my standpoint... not childish. Using stamps is a good business model for me. I get discounted shipping and my customers get what they want. (which means they will return and purchase more.)

Sayasan - no you are not the only person here. I'm one of those sellers who is under the belief that as a buyer you are buying the contents of the envelope and not the 45c or $1.05c worth of stamps that would be on the envelope ( most of which are worth 1-2c at tops anyway ). My envelopes that my purchases arrive in are the first thing that ends up in the bin when anything gets delivered to me. The only possible thing I save are any Priority Mail stamps, but those are rarely used because sellers like to get the USPS discounts by printing their labels online, something for which I do not have a problem.

Sayasan & Cobbie,
it also doesn't bother me that sellers use labels instead of stamps,
One of the aspects is one day posting, All Ebay sellers should have had that years ago and to make it mandatory or lose status then all the better.

I quite agree. With the technology that is available today, there is no excuse for anyone not to ship within one day of receiving payment. I can even ship on a Sunday as my P.O. is open 24 hours a day for drop off. If I am unable to get to my P.O. for any reason I can arrange for them to pick my mail up within office hours so again, no excuses for not shipping promptly.

Cobbie,
it is not 1 day shipping, it is next business day shipping.
Friday sales can be posted Monday,
I get annoyed when I see some sellers stating 7-14 days or they only post on Wednesdays or Fridays. Big sellers who deserve discounts should have some sort of routine when items are packed and posted,

Now think of Non-US located but US registered sellers.I am in Greece.I am a silver Top Rated seller. I do not receive the 20 % discount on ebay expenses . With the new ebay rules I have to mail registered every single item to US . My avarage sale per item is in the vicinityof 8-10 $.I sell many single coins costing 1-5$ . I will have to add 4.00$ to the standard shipment rate. I sell stamps ,coins (Heavy items) & collectibles.I have to mail within 24 hrs. and recording the same day the registries. What about a client wanting to combine other items ending after many days. What about the holidays in Greece.I am trying to catch up to all these but I think I will not be able to make it.One month advance given by ebay is not relevant. Probably non-Us sellers should be excluded from these rules. Finally the only benefit of a top seller remains to be the sales support given in search engines.I will probably loose this support too. Will ebay officials hear me ? Thanks to everbody reading and greetings from sunny Greece.

I agree 100% with the comments re stamp shipment tracking numbers. I've used eBay exclusively for over 10 years. The preponderance of my shipments are in envelopes with first class postage and the average value of my lots is below $20. When I have a lot of value approaching $50 or over $50, I typically insure for $50, which gives me a tracking number. At an insurance cost of $1.65, that is not an effective option to get tracking numbers on most of my shipments. This eBay policy will drive stamp sellers to other sites, where they are not treated as second class citizens. This policy will undoubtedly also penalize trading card and post card shippers. eBay needs to change this policy to accomodate U.S, mail shipments of relatively low value.

eBay is using this as a tool to run off the small, unique item sellers who do not fit their model for doing business. They only want sellers who list items that can sell many units from one listing.
Protests and boycotts will be ignored and similar "updates" will come down the pipe until they get to the Amazon model they are moving toward.
Selling small, unique items like stamps may still be possible but eBay will see that their profit margins continue to increase with this type of listing. Their announced reasons for these "updates" are, of course, a sham!

Numerous stamp sellers are fighting this by uploading a tracking number that is not actually used, just sending first class mail for 45c.
Takes little effort, hurts no one and may help maintain status and discounts.
Good plan guys!

Any Post Office will give you a bunch of delivery confirmation slips so you can fill them out in advance. They have valid tracking numbers on them.
If they are not actually used, doesn't matter.

Surely the PO will catch on when you start taking 100+ DC slips per week just so that you have numbers you can enter online. Also if your buyer sees this number entered against their shipment, checks out that it is not showing as delivered, files a non received complaint, they will get their money back. Does the new policy stipulate that a tracking number has to be uploaded, or that it has to show up as delivered ? If you ask me this is a really stupid way to go and will probably end up costing these sellers more in the long run from dishonest buyers.
