"signed" 1986 Hardback Scotts catalogs ??

Hey guys,

I am slowly selling some of my Father in Law's stamp collection.  One of the things I have is a 1986 Scotts catalog, set of 4 plus the specialized volume. These are hard cover books and volume one has been signed and numbered ??  Anyone have any idea if they are worth any more than the usual Scotts ? Who would have signed it ? Looks like the last name might be Pritchett ?

If I were to guess, I'd guess your father bought the set used a couple of years after they were release (as most collectors do, libraries and dealers are the ones most likely to buy them new) and the signature was the previous owners name. No real value for those old catalogs, though '86 may have been one of the last years they were printed hard bound. They (all except the Classic Specialized) are softbound these days. They typically hold some resale value for ten years or so, then turn into donation fodder...

Knowing him I would guess exactly the opposite. I am almost 100% certain he bought them new.  Probably from someone like Kenmore stamps etc. Volume 1 has "#181" written in the corner of the front page and is signed "Charles Pritchett"  I guess I will put them on and see what happens. Even a few dollars is better than them being thrown away :(

Just found this:

Charles Pritchett was a Scott executive vice president.  Looks like it must have been some type of special signed edition. Probably still not worth anything :)

I have recycled dozens of Scotts catalogs. Like almanacs, they rarely contain much useful information (especially value) after 25 years. Probably not worth the freight................ or the listing fee

Worse comes to worst you might do a donation of them to one of the philatelic libraries. They could replace their existing historical Scott for that year with the signed and numbered one. :)

After all, you then get to deduct the 'fair market value' for a collectible book rather than for a 25 year old catalog...
