Some One Who Knows about Stamps Please Advise

I just bought a lot of about 1000 stamps at a yard sale. There is every denomination from a 1/2 cent up. All but a few are cancelled. How do I group them for sale? I can't possably sell each one individually. I'm thinking of selling in lots of a hundred . Here's what i really really really want to know, Is there a stamp worth a ton of money I should look for before i just sell them. I'd hate to have a real gem slip through my fingers. Thank you, Karyn

If they are all US and all but a few are cancelled, chances are they are probably from the last 50-75 years which makes them worth in the $2-5 range. However , if you can maybe take a picture or two of what you have and link to it here then we can give you a little more detailed information as to the value.

The oldest ones I've seen are 1929 and I'm still trying to sort through them all. There are a lot of foreign ones but I've put them aside to concentrate on the US ones. There are easter seals and blue chip stamps too, this person must have just thrown everything in this box all their life. I'm wondering if there is one stamp that might be worth a lot of money that I should look for so I can retire in style!! I will ask DH to scan some and post them on this blog, thanks for taking the time to answer me, Karyn

Karyn,
Yes, images would help.
Most likely if the stamps are thrown into a box, they are common, minimum value stamps.
If mounted in an album, probably minimum value.
But yes, it is possible you have some gems.
I would ask you to look through the eBay Stamps-US sections, for completed auctions, for stamp groups similar to yours.
Good luck,
Matt

If the oldest are 1929 then the chances you have anything worth while are slim to none. A few pictures will be useful though.

When you reply there is a little paper clip icon at the top right of this box, when you click on this it allows you to attach images to the post.

You probably just had the cursor in the wrong area. Click on the area where you type your message, then click on the paperclip that is next to the tree. You'll get a requester with Image, Audio, and Document as the options. Choose Image, you'll get an expanded window with a 'Brose' button for choosing your picture. You also have the option to embed the picture in your text (like I'm doing here) and to choose the size of that embedded image (I chose Large (300 px). Click on Add and you should have the picture in your message.

Looks like your accumulation is pretty much what was expected. The stamps were mostly saved off the mail and are in general quite common. No trips to Bermuda on these, I'm afraid... The total value is well under the 1¢/stamp range.
In the second scan there's a Post Office Department Officially Sealed label. These are collectible, but in general only on the full cover. They are used when the PO (for some reason) has had to open your mail, or when it's opened by accident (such as a sorting machine failure). You can't tell what caused the usage without seeing the rest of the cover.
Stamps like the one from Japan in the first scan, which are damaged, are probably best just thrown away, unless you know someone who makes those craft lampshades or such. Once they're that damaged there's nothing left that most collectors will want. There are several others in both scans that are damaged, some might be worth giving to a kid who's starting out, but most aren't.

That's for taking a look. I have a few that are not used and some foreign ones. I'll ask DH to do more scanning for me so I can post them later. I think I'll take your advise and sell them as a lot, probably 2 lots since there are so many. I also got envelopes which have the postage ( imbeded from the post office) on them. Are they saleable?

The envelopes that have not yet been canceled are still usable for postage, with a stamp to make up the rest of the current rate (I believe even the airmails are valid for regular postage, but someone will correct me if I'm wrong). The postcards are too small to be mailed these days though, since they changed the minimum postcard size a few years ago.
The ones that are canceled looked like they were either FDCs (First Day Covers) or event covers. Those aren't worth much, but should be lotted separate from the stamps and unused covers, unless there's just too few of them to make a lot (a single lot shouldn't really be smaller than $10 or so or else your income will be eaten by fees).
